General Info

Young boarding upstart Toby Cotton is a fire-cracker, plain and simple. Running off seemingly limitless energy, this kid aims to wring the last drop of fun out of life by any means necessary. Cotton's friends describe him as "The kind of guy who'd give you the shirt off his back," and it's that sort of genuine and kind nature that has garnered Toby a growing following on South Island's amateur circuits. That said, the yellow rodent definitely seems to have developed himself a case of middle-child syndrome, showing off constantly on and off the track. Unfortunately, combined with Cotton’s thrill-seeking nature, frequent disregard for danger and love of everything boarding-related, it's not too uncommon to see the kid get himself into a precarious situation. It’s worth noting, however, that Toby’s risk-taking occasionally pays off in a big way, leading him to take on the seemingly impossible and succeed. He’s unflappable, optimistic, and he's not giving up until he carves his mark onto whatever he's doing or whomever he's with.

At home, Toby spends his time romping around the chao garden his family oversees, getting creative with his hobby of graffiti art, and simply musing on life, dreams and the deeper significance of boarding. His attention-grabbing behavior can sometimes make this kid come off as self-centered, wearing thin on those with little patience. However, time has shown Cotton to be a deeply empathetic soul that's always willing to help out others in a pinch. Unfortunately, that rare empathetic quality that Toby possesses also creates a gullibility in the boy, handing out the benefit of the doubt far too often. Just like his recklessness, Toby's trust is a double-edged sword helping him to make connections with others, as well as offering up an invitation to be used.

Ability Info

Given a hand-me-down board at an early age, Toby took to riding a gear like a duck to water. He may not be considered professional, but the boy has made some headway in amateur racing circuits around South Island, even to the point of taking home a few first place trophies. Toby’s attitude and fearlessness turn him into a bullet on a board, constantly pushing his limits until they break.

When they’re not fixed steadily on his board, Toby’s legs in and of themselves are pretty incredible. He may not be a speed demon, but Toby was born to jump, soaring into the sky with nothing more than the force of his own two feet. Built for jumping and strengthened by years of crouching and tight corners, Toby’s legs are truly a force to be reckoned with. Though he may not be trained in any form of traditional combat, getting caught by one of Toby’s kicks is far from fun for whoever’s on the receiving end. However, that certainly doesn’t make up for his complete lack of education on what to do in combat situations. Although boarding has made him perceptive, and his sense of hearing is great, his only real salvation in a fight of any kind is the element of surprise. Luckily, Toby doesn’t exactly seem to go around making enemies, so it usually isn’t too huge of a problem.

By no stretch of the imagination is Toby anything special as far as upper body strength goes, but what he has gets the job done. Most of what Toby is endowed with physically comes straight from his experience boarding and his family’s “work hard, play hard” lifestyle. When Toby isn’t working to help out with the chao garden his family oversees, checking out new boarding locales, or having one of those rare, contemplative moments, he’s usually out tackling his siblings to the ground in some rough-and-tumble game on his family’s huge plot of land. Toby is physically fit, and pretty hard to wear out, but just isn’t a brute.

Kyle

It's rare that Toby is ever seen without his lookalike chao companion, Kyle. Kyle loves three things: food, mischief, and Toby, with Toby taking the top spot by a wide, wide margin. Wherever Toby goes, Kyle is there tagging along at his heels, taking note of his every move. Just as Toby competes for the attention of his parents and others, Kyle fights for Toby’s attention like it’s an Olympic gold medal. He’s very affectionate to Toby and anyone in general who seems friendly. However, Kyle does have a pinch of prankster in him, pulling rudimentary jokes on unsuspecting victims. They’re usually harmless enough, and they generally stop with a little scolding or a simple development of relationship, but they can get old after time (They stopped real quick for Toby’s father after one of his favorite ties ended up in the garbage disposal).

Kyle is a featherweight in the most extreme of senses, but does have one trick up his sleeve that occasionally makes itself useful in a pinch. Like most chao, with enough physical contact with a living thing, Kyle can temporarily copy an aspect of that thing to his own body, be it a limb, and attribute, or something else entirely. Unfortunately, it’s rare that this ability becomes useful, as it would take upwards of five seconds of direct physical contact with the subject to make a successful copy; more than enough time to rip the little jelly belly away. However, given the right subject and enough time, Kyle can become a short-lived glass cannon, offering up an unexpected advantage in a tricky spot.

  • Other Trivia:
    • Toby's broken a total of seven bones in his lifetime: his left arm, his left wrist, his tail, his nose twice, and two ribs. Surprisingly, he's never broken a leg.
    • The first bone Toby ever broke was his nose, and he broke it the first time he rode a board at age seven. He couldn't figure out how to slow the thing down, and slammed face-first into a stop sign... which did the job for him.
    • Toby still enjoys reading "choose your own path" stories. Every now and again, he'll pick one up from the local library, flip through the pages, and try not to die.
    • Tracy Cotton, Toby's older brother, was the first to ride a gear in his family. He gave up quickly on the hobby, discovering that his balance was less than phenomenal due to chronic ear infections at an early age.
    • On the rare, rare occasion that Toby has the house to himself, he enjoys pulling out his mother's recipe book and polishing his culinary skills. That way, Tracy can't make fun of him for it.
    • Francis Cotton, the eldest of the Cotton family's girls, was abandoned by her biological mother on the steps of a Spring City orphanage. When the Cotton family went looking to adopt, Frankie seemed a perfect addition to their growing group.
    • The Cotton family no longer allows breath-holding competitions after one erupted into a full-fledged fist fight between Toby and Tracy. That's how Toby broke his nose the second time.
    • Every now and again, Toby and Tabby will sneak off and play a late night round of miniature golf at Ralph's All-Night Race n' Putt. It's their little secret.
    • Every year, the Cotton family holds a picnic and water-balloon fight and invites the entirety of Emerald Town to join in the fun in their massive yard. It's sort of a tradition.
    • While at home, Tabby insists Kyle sleep in her bed. Kyle does not appreciate the constant cuddling.
