If you're in a Sonic RP, you know what rings are. This article isn't going to tell you a thing about them or where they come from, but just how they affect gameplay in this group's story, and other trivia.

Rings as currency

In chapter 4, rings became global currency in our story. They may be stored in special containers, or pocket-sized devices called ring wallets (which prevent the rings from being sent flying everywhere in the event the character gets hit by something, and also facilitate easier transfer of rings between parties). Since this is just an RP, we don't really have exacting exchange rates, but if you want something to compare it to in real life, you can consider 1 ring to equal roughly 10¢ USD. (For the mathematically challenged, that means 10 rings = $1.00.)

Rules for using rings defensively

You might be in the wrong RP if you don't already know what this looks like.
  • Rings here are like small-scale, depletable sources of chaos energy. That said, they can be "absorbed" by characters, like they always have been able to in the games, and like Chaos Emeralds, too.
  • If an attack would be injurious to a character, and the character is holding a ring, the ring will protect the character, and forcefully, repulsively blast him or her back in a stunning, but mostly harmless manner. The character will probably be left a little disoriented from the blow, but unharmed.
  • Any and all rings held while being struck will be lost, and will vanish quickly. (There are kind of large and cumbersome containers that can hold rings safely, though they won't be of any use to characters while they're stored in such a way.)
  • Given that this is an RP and not an actual video game, recovering dropped rings could quickly become cheap and annoying. It is strongly, strongly discouraged. Assume they disappear before your character has a chance to recover them.
  • Don't have your character always carrying rings. We really only have them because they're an obligatory part of the Sonic series that can't reasonably be left out, and they're useful for certain story sequences (literally as plot shields). Don't be cheap, basically.
  • Rings can fail. Crushing forces that pin a character down and prevent the rings from knocking a character free will render rings useless. (Think of classic Sonic gameplay, where rings didn't do a thing to protect Sonic from getting smashed by traps.)
  • Besides protecting from injury, rings may slightly enhance or support some energy-based attacks, help power robots, and so on. They don't work like in Sonic X, though, so don't expect your character to grab one and then suddenly become an invincible cannonball of doom.
