General Info
To her adoring fans Mary is the outgoing, eccentric reporter of Channel 5 News: an upbeat, sassin', free-spirited personality who provides and partakes in the most dangerous of coverage. Blunt, sarcastic, yet highly expressive, she's got no problem speaking her mind when she feels it warranted, but otherwise tries to be approachable when possible. Yet, lively and gung-ho as she is, Mary by no means fits the stereotype of her species. A number of people routinely make the mistake in assuming she's either too naive or careless for more profound tact, which unfortunately for them, tends to lead to a lot of problems later down the road...
Because quite contrary to when the cameras are rolling, Mary is a scheming manipulator, with almost every aspect of her public persona in reality, amped to unhealthy extremes. She's expressive to the point of erraticism, and so pathologically free-spirited, she has little sense of what's right or wrong; conventional morality becoming mere speculation at best, and at worst, weightless opinion she'll bend against her heels if it means getting what she wants. Mary's indeed as spunky, and energetic as she is on the news, but this unabashed, fun-loving nature of hers often extends itself to the point of disregard or intentionally harmful antics. She is willing to try almost anything for the thrill of conflict -- even if that means going as far to throw herself into danger, instigate or even fabricate new dilemmas just to watch the unfolding spectacle occur at someone else's expense.
And yet, odd as it sounds, the entirety of her character can't quite be summed up as just a self-centered bitch with a few screws loose, either (despite her definitely being these things). Occasionally, there are hints towards a more sincere person deep down. Living through the rough streets of Westside prior to her career has subsequently lost her a lot of sensitivity towards others for survival's sake, though not all of it. It's not that she can't even see individuals for the people they are as opposed to walking tools for her own amusement so much the fact that often times, she just doesn't like to let herself. But despite this, and her constant rationalizing it for something more consciously acceptable, Mary is nonetheless able to display great lengths of compassion for people -- provided it not too inconvenient with her interests, of course. And in the rare events she lets her guard down enough to genuinely bond with a person, she can become a formidable ally, using that same, dangerous tenacity typically used against others to ironically do whatever it takes to protect the few she'd admittedly call a 'friend' -- even if for most of the time, her antics portray a careless, not-so-funny way of showing it.
Ability Info
Though her species doesn't offer any substantial ability or inherent strengths, upon moving in with her estranged father, his wealth, added to Mary's own hobbies and prior time on the streets have peppered her into a seasoned brawler. While she might not be the strongest of fighters, she's at her best, an expert gymnast with more energy than a kid on a sugar high to sustain herself. Mary combines her dance moves with acrobatic techniques to create her own fighting style, offering swift movements and and fluid attacks with added flexibility and evasiveness as a bonus. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the recurring violence of her birthplace, she's also developed a mild interest in firearms and how to use them. Mary's job won't let her carry anything lethal, so instead she wields with her a Chaos-powered energy gun for more long-ranged support. She's a decent enough shot with it, though far from an expert, and the weapon's poor charge time paired with more faster and agile opponents can sometimes produce more problems than it solves. As a result, Mary usually prefers to confront people physically under close-ranged combat unless out of necessity. Besides, according to her, where's the fun in shooting down a good fight too quick?
