Chat etiquette

The following are guidelines to follow when using the SSRP IRC server.

Be polite

Be nice to people. Don't be needlessly rude, vulgar, or disrespectful, and be at least a little mindful about linking to potentially offensive content.

Respect others' opinions

As the wise saying goes, do not piss on anyone's parade. If someone is talking about some video game, movie, music, or other thing you dislike, it's okay to share your opinion tactfully if you really want to, but you don't need to harp on it or get up in arms over it.

Don't role-play in the main chat channel

We don't do chat role-playing here. If you want large-scale chat RP, go somewhere else. Granted, what you do in privacy is up to you, but if you go trying to play your characters in some fourth-wall-breaking randumb chat role-playing in our main channel, you'll not only get strange looks, but you'll probably also receive a kick and warning.

Be understanding about the ebb and flow of chat

Our chat is not constantly active. If you log in and find 8 other people logged in, and none of them answer you when you say hello, it doesn't mean they all hate you. It means they all have the chat window open, but may not be actively looking at it.
This is okay. Idling in the chat is okay. We do not devote all our attention to the chat the entire time we are logged in. Some of us do work, clean, write posts, read, nap, play games, or any other number of things while the chat sits open.

It's okay for people to come and go without greeting or warning

If you haven't yet figured it out already from the above, this is a very casual chat environment. We all have real lives. Though greetings and goodbyes are nice things, we pop in and out as we please at times.

In summary

Be friendly, don't be a downer just because someone likes something you don't, keep all RPing on the forums, and understand that talking in the chat is not the same as having a telephone conversation. Idling happens. There is no formality.
(And, it should go without saying that anyone who comes in for the sole purpose of spamming or plugging other sites will be banned.)
