Mysterious and powerful, the Chaos Emeralds remained hidden for millennia, but were rediscovered approximately half a century ago, when they came to be used in experiments by Dr. Gerald Robotnik aboard Space Colony ARK. What happened to the Chaos Emeralds following the cessation of Project Shadow and the closure of ARK remains a mystery. Regardless, they reappeared sometime a few years back on South Island as part of one of Dr. Eggman's nefarious plots, and they've been at the center of very nearly every plot to conquer or protect the world ever since.
Chaos Emeralds are usable as a source of seemingly-infinite energy, but electrical equipment can only utilize it if specially equipped to do so. Living things may more readily utilize chaos energy to seemingly supernatural effect, though only very few have latent proficiency. Generally, such abilities only come with practice, experience, and prolonged exposure.
