Main Official Characters
These are the current "main" characters of the series, presented (roughly) in the order they appeared in the series timeline.[1]
The world's favorite hero, and its fastest, Sonic the Hedgehog needs little introduction. Free-spirited and fleet of foot, Sonic moves like the wind (literally!) wherever he pleases and doesn't let anyone stand in his way. He can be a little harsh-spoken sometimes, but he's quick to rush to the aid of others whenever there's trouble, and has a very strong sense of justice. However, he isn't above having a little reckless (or even chaotic) fun in his never-ending battle with his nemesis and rival, Dr. Eggman, sometimes at the expense of peace and public property. Still, when things get serious, Sonic does, too, and he always tries his hardest to do what's right. | ||
Brilliant, childish, calculating, careless, cruel, amiable—all words that normally don't go together very well, yet serve to effectively describe the famed Dr. Eggman. An overgrown brat with a luxurious mustache, incredible technological know-how, and limitless resources (and resourcefulness), Dr. Eggman is an aspiring tyrant whose only recurring obstacle to success is a big blue thorn in his side. The doctor holds a long-running, vicious, yet oddly congenial rivalry with his hedgehog nemesis, and so long as the world has metal to make robots out of, it probably won't end any time soon. | ||
Chipper and airy, Amy Rose can seem a little bubble-headed at times, but who doesn't do silly things in the name of love? She's unabashedly head-over-heels infatuated with Sonic the Hedgehog and gladly takes any excuse to be around him even if it means being in danger. While she may be a bit heavy-handed and jealous with her romantic intentions, she's really a sweet-natured girl to most everyone, and regularly goes out of her way to help others. Just beware of her temper. She's not as impatient as Sonic or Knuckles, but when she does lose her cool, it ain't pretty. | ||
Tails is the super-genius for the good guys. When something needs building, fixing, scrapping or computing, Tails is the one who is there with the blueprints, wrench, furnace or calculator. Hopelessly informative and frighteningly helpful, he will stick around any situation he can tackle until the problem is solved or it's time to go to sleep, and sometimes he keeps working even then. Ostensibly Sonic's #1 Buddy, when the hedgehog isn't suffering a sudden attack of his chronic wanderlust, the two are largely inseparable. | ||
A dutiful, loyal, honorable, albeit kind of gruff type, Knuckles the Echidna is a serious man with a serious job: namely, making sure that the most powerful source of energy in the known world does not fall into the hands of the rogues, despots and primeval creatures of ancient destruction—a task he's been dedicated to since childhood. As the result of his duty-bound stay on Angel Island, guarding the Master Emerald, he has led a sheltered life, which has given him a rather naive and honest outlook on the villains he has come to face. Still, he's a determined fighter who won't rest if the Master Emerald isn't safe in its shrine. | ||

Unlike many of his friends, Big is in absolutely no hurry to do anything or go anywhere. This gentle giant has no use for fast-paced hectic life; fishing with his amphibian friend, Froggy, is all he needs to be happy. Even if it's not exactly the highest of aspirations, it's hard to argue when he's as just-plain-content as he is. Still, he's always willing to lend a hand whenever his friends need his help, and with his penchant for randomly showing up in odd places, it's strangely common for him to end up in the thick of the action. | ||
Just as dark and mysterious as he looks, Shadow's origins are known to a relative few, while his ultimate goals are known to no one at all. With immense power at his disposal and allegiance that changes like the wind, the artificial hedgehog is difficult to trust. Though compassionate enough to generally be ranked among the "good guys" now, he looks out for himself first and foremost, and pursues what he thinks is right at any cost. | ||

Blaze has the responsibility of guarding the Sol Emeralds, her world's parallel to the Chaos Emeralds and its lifeblood, an she takes this duty with utmost seriousness and fiery resolve (literally—she wields fire freely and powerfuly). She's usually reticent and calm, shying away from contact with others, often suspicious of people and their motives. Since befriending Cream and Sonic, however, she's become a little less high-strung. Still — don't get near her emeralds. | ||

Really Obscure Characters
There are other official characters not listed here, but it doesn't mean you wouldn't be allowed to play them if you wanted to. So, if you get a hankering to play the likes of Honey the Cat (the omitted crossover character deleted from Sonic the Fighters), Great Battle Cuckoo XVI "Speedy" (a sub-boss from Tails Adventures), or someone equally obscure or unheard of, feel free to ask. As long as they're from a game that doesn't conflict with the main series, it'll probably be allowable.
Disallowed Characters
Some characters are unplayable. These include...
- Characters who have died / moved on (Chaos, Tikal, Gamma [the original one, anyway])
- Characters outside the continuity of the main game series (Anybody exclusive to Sonic 2k6 [it was self-retconning], DiC/Archie/StC, Sonic X, etc.)
- Crossover characters (Characters from other video games/sources, Mario and his crew from Mario & Sonic, characters from SaSASR, any characters from other non-main-game-series sources, etc.)
Notes
- ↑ Yes, we consider Sonic CD to have taken place before Sonic 2 even though it released after. That's because Sonic CD was in development at the same time as Sonic 2, and Sonic 2 forms an unbreakable chain of games between itself, Sonic 3, and S3&K, leaving no other rational placement for the story. That's why Amy appears above Tails in the chronological list. Vector would appear higher (since he was actually designed for the Sonic 1 sound test) but that would give him the appearance of massively undue significance, so he goes where he goes.
