General Info

Well-mannered, even-tempered, generous, and upright, Baron Dureau von Fremont is a modern-day nobleman with a lot old-world charm. While he is proud of his ancestry and background, he's otherwise humble in his demeanor and very straightforward in speech, with no unnecessary grandiloquence, and not much concern with appearances or keeping esteemed company. To put it bluntly, he's a pretty straight-up good guy. It's almost hard to see faults in him.

He isn't without at least a few quirks, though. He isn't above flights of fancy, and he can get a little exaggeratedly dreary if the weather's bad and the mood strikes him right—like, to the point of writing melancholic poetry. (It gets that bad sometimes.) On the other hand, when he's in especially high spirits, he can get a little mischievous. He keeps it well suppressed for the most part, though.

Dureau is fairly balanced, but unexceptional. His footspeed isn't terribly impressive, and his strength is purely average for an "athletic" individual, but he is very agile, gracefully coordinated, and flexible. He's the product of a wealthy upbringing, with a healthy interest in sports. He fences, sails, bicycles, hikes, motors—he enjoys the outdoors, and feels more at home on the sea or in the mountains than in a study. There just isn't a whole lot more to say beyond that.

Really, the most noteworthy thing about him is actually something that he only recently began to carry: his shield. The family heirloom shield spent quite a while on display, but for whatever reason, he recently started carrying it with him everywhere he goes. What it's made out of is a mystery, but it's heavy, and doesn't show many signs of wear, despite its purported age.

  • Though technically a weasel (or "stoat"), Dureau is permanently "ermine"—that is to say, his white winter coloration never goes away or darkens. This is a point of pride for his family, and is a mark of his lineage.
  • As his title suggests, he is indeed from a wealthy family, and owns a lot of land—most of the town of Fremont. He does little to manage his own estate, however, leaving it in the hands of a trusted steward.
  • Around Cape Norden, he is known as "The Gypsy Lord," sometimes pejoratively. There are a lot of stories behind the nickname, but it's hard to tell which is true. Some say it's just because of his well-known wanderlust, and others because he ran away with a traveling circus in his early childhood.
  • He plays accordion and piano.
