If you're tired of the same old story (Ch. 6: Day 1)

It would be easy to say that Geoff was at least a little bit surprise at Jack's approach, maybe assuming he would have this section of the pier all to himself for the rest of their time there, but he didn't reject conversation. In fact, a hint of a grin played across his lips at the joking accusation.

"Ah, well." He threw a quick glance over his shoulder to the other members of their party. "Was planning on getting to that eventually. Had to... clear things up with Casey, so now I'm just taking the time to properly relax."

"Ya don't look all that relaxed." She replied smiling a up at Geoff. "Do'ya recon you could spare a moment ta bring me up to speed on what the hecks goin' on?"

"All I know is, Eggman lost his bots, ya'll end up in Chu-nan, and Ace immediately gets kidnapped by the meanest gangster in the country. How does any ah'that even happen?" She seemed genuinely bewildered as to how or why any of this happened, and in what world it made sense. Jack came up with a dozen theory's but not a one of them really made any sense how one thing connected to another.

"Well, you know us, Jack," began Geoff in an almost joking manner. "Can't take two steps without something new blowing up in our faces."

He paused, but not in hesitation on the task of answering Jack's question. It was just a matter of where to begin. The events of the last month or two were whirlwind of memory, and sometimes it was almost a challenge piecing it all back together into a coherent thought.

"Anyway," said the hedgehog, clearing his throat as he turned more fully to the griffin. "After we ran into you back when everyone was holed up in that hideout, we, believe it or not... had to team up with Seven." He raised his hands in a defensive manner, knowing all too well what sort of reaction could come from that. "Hear me out for a sec. He had the means of getting control away from the doc, and we didn't have any better options. Let's just say we weren't all to thrilled..."

He went on to lengthily explain the whole ordeal, from the obvious mistrust of the kid to the decision to raid Eggman's base themselves and finally the confrontation in space. Things became a bit more somber as he halfheartedly explained Rock and Jam's interference, Geoff's voice becoming more and more distant as he just let his lips outwardly express the memory.

"...and just like that; dead. Never thought it could be that simple. Just one twist of an arm, and..." He trailed off, his gaze having returned to the sea. "...anyway, after that, we just wanted to leave. Got ourselves into that ship, and managed to get stuck in Chun-nan. Rock's doing, if I had to make a guess."

"That sums most of it up, anyway."

Jack became very quiet as he told his story. He was right about her reaction to Seven, that kid rubbed everyone the wrong way. But killing him? Jack put a hand on Geoff's shoulder, offering him a wry smile.

"Even that brat didn't deserve that." She said, she had more then a few thoughts on what Rock might deserve at this point, but she didn't say as much. "It just ain't right takin' a life..."

"Yeah, it isn't..." he muttered, the statement only forming a deep frown. An icy train and a bear came to mind, only increasing the brief look of conflict in his expression. He wondered how many times this would be a recurring moment.

"Anyway," he stated abruptly, forcing himself to stand a bit straighter as if not wishing to dwell on such thoughts. "We're still in one piece, right? At least we can get something done. Maybe set things right in the long run."

"We will be settin' things right, Geoff." She said confidently. She had to hold out hope that all of this could be worked out for the better.

"None of that explains why Ace was grabbed by Li Fang. Did he just get snatched up outta the blue?" She asked, taking her hat off to mess with her hair a bit, which immediately fell in her eyes without her hat. Geoff's change in expressions and abrupt refocusing wasn't lost on her, but she wasn't going to pry into things that where clearly bothering him unless he wanted to talk about them.

Geoff rolled on with the continuing questioning, putting distance between now and the obvious change of demeanor that had occurred only moments prior.

"Where we ended up isn't what you would call the most modern of settlements. Ended up taking a train to Hoeng Kong. Managed to poke our noses where we shouldn't, though, and interfered with Li Fang's crew. Things..." Another one of those pauses, although not as long or dire as before. "...happened. It turned out the train was transporting the mirror, and they ended up nabbing it in the end. Guess we pissed him off enough to get Ace in the mess he's now in."

He shrugged, expressing his confusion as to why the serval was such an important target for the mob boss.

"Could always be another reason, I guess..."

"Its peculiar, just takin' Ace. There's others who'd of been easier to take, if it was just to make a point.... " Jack said, thinking aloud as she ran a hand through her hair, brushing it back enough to put her bangs back under it before returning the hat to its former position.

"Any idea what that mirror does?" She asked after a thoughtful pause. She was getting up to speed, and Geoff was coming to the end of her questions. Jack asks lots of questions, apparently you can take the griffin out of the desert but you can't take the sheriff out of the griffin. "Agent Gardnyer-er. Uhm, Pax, didn't seem ta know."

"Unfortunately, I experienced it," answered Geoff, frowning again although for a different reason. "When Ace was getting kidnapped, one of Li Fang's men came walking on in with it. It makes you... slow. Muddles your mind. Cuts you off from certain things."

To demonstrate his point, he raised a hand, letting it be covered in green crystal, the material reflecting the lights of the boardwalk.

"Couldn't even do this when that thing was around. It was unsettling, having it just blocked from you. I mean, I wasn't born this way, but its a part of me now. Made me feel exposed."

He shook his head, letting the rock crumble and fall, pebbles and shards splashing down into the water.

"And I've got a feeling that's not all it can do."

That was not good news. None of what Geoff had brought her was good news. She looked troubled as she crossed her arms, leaning against the wooden railing that ran the length of the board walk.

"Fer the likes of Li Fang ta go to this much trouble, he must already have a plan fer what he wants to do with it." She took out her note pad and wrote a few things down. As a sheriff she'd have to take notes for filing reports and investigations. Now she did it because it helped her think and work out details.

"I reckon we all should be prepared as best we can to deal with Li Fang even if he turns that mirror on us."
