Site Announcement Title

Updates

Sonic Spindash RP is closed.

Founded 05/25/2002 by three friends; ended 09/19/2012.

It pains me to say this, but we're done. Thank you to those who have participated and followed along these many years. We had a lot of fun, and your contributions will be remembered for a long time to come.

Strangers and visitors of the future, please respect what is ours. If there is anything in the form of writing or rules you'd like to borrow for your own RP, please e-mail me on the gmail account "onsoku" for permission. Chances are I'll grant it if you are a nice, intelligent person, and agree to just a few small stipulations regarding proper crediting method. But please, leave our characters alone. All fan-made, original, non-SEGA characters, character art, and concepts remain property of their respective creators. Please show respect and don't try to take any of them for your own use.

I hope that some of us will be able to move on and have some more fun writing hobbies in the future. No matter what, we'll stay in touch, and this group will live on, even if it has nothing to do with RP.

I love you guys. God bless.

----

I'm new and, um, this is my first character.

What is your character's name?
> Frost

Species?
> Puffin

Age?
> 14

Give us a couple paragraphs of general info about your character. For example, what's the character's personality like? What kind of things does he or she do? Why does he or she do it? (Please don't give us your character's point-by-point life history, though.)
> Frost is a know-it-all, think-first-act-later, goofball type of guy. Growing up in the cold of the north, and not having many people to socialize with, he doesn't make friends well, and has a hard time keeping them. He spends most of his free time at home, tinkering with his customized Extreme Gear, his fly type board Frigid Iceberg. He's a pretty good mechanic; on a 1 to 10 scale, with Wave level mechanics at 10, he'd be a 7. When he's not messing around with his EX Gear, he's in town trying all the foods he didn't have up north. His favorite types of food are spicy and sour. He'd say he's a connoisseur. Others would say he's a glutton.

Does your character have any skills or special abilities, a gimmick, or anything that makes it stand out as an athlete or fighter? If so, talk a little about it here. Be sure to include an explanation or origin story for anything unusual, extraordinary, or supernatural.
> He's a good mechanic, has always been interested with it, and can ride pretty well on Ex Gear. A basic fighter, nothing special. Runs at about Tails' speed.

Does your character have any purpose? (It's okay if you don't have this fully figured out yet, but all the better if your character does have an agenda or some sort of driving force to it to make it interact with other characters.)
> Would help with problems, but other than that, he just wants to go home and tinker.

Does your character have an image? You can post it here, if so (as long as you follow the rules mentioned in the character guidelines). If not, please write a description of your character's appearance.
> Mostly black, has a few feathers poking out with white tips. Violet eyes. Green tipped Tails' style shoes. Green and white gloves. Basic body shape.

Will you be around to play your character regularly? (i.e. Keeping daily tabs on any threads you involve yourself in, and posting whenever it's your turn?)
> I'll try my best.

Do you live in or near the Americas, or elsewhere? (It may be difficult for you to participate in any of the fast-moving sessions if you're only online when the rest of the group is asleep, so we ask this just to be aware of any potential problems.)
> Yes I do.

Are you okay with having your character information and image on this website (such as on the wiki)?
> Absolutely.

What is your name? (This question isn't optional. We need something to call you by that isn't your character's name. Don't post your last name, though! This forum isn't private.)
> Garrett's my name, RPing's my game.

Hey there, and welcome.

A few things to address.

1. Rating your character on a scale of 0 to Wave the Swallow, comparing its speed to Tails, and giving it Tails' shoes heavily wounds its capacity to seem original in any way. Cut out the parallels to official characters and use colorful, interesting description rather than blase comparisons and borrowed designs.

2. If your character is a "basic fighter," it would be a boon to you to explain why and actually make the abilities section more than one sentence (and a fragment) long.

3. If your character's goal is just to go home and be alone, it will likely achieve said goal quickly. You'll find yourself wondering why you submitted a character at all as you are left with absolutely nothing to do in our story. You should reconsider.

You're welcome to reply to this thread again if you want, but do be sure to take your time doing so. Every part of the submission would benefit from a little more fleshing out.

Thanks for the feedback, and the reason I used other characters as comparisons was because I needed a control, or perfect 10. The shoes aren't exactly like Tails, the green parts on the front and they have 2 silver buckles on each shoe, and I can see why they do seem borrowed, and I'll reconsider. Although, the speed is a bit debatable. I mean, lots of characters can run at Tails' speed, but he's the most well known, and he's pretty much the middle ground. The personality is a big bump though. I wanted to make him seem a bit anti-social, but not at home all the time. Maybe you could give me an example of how I could make it better. The "Basic fighter" was just a term for "can punch and kick, but doesn't know much outside of that". Anyway, thanks.

I really hoped the discussion about the Speed of Tails wouldn't need further exploration, as it gets longwinded beyond this point, but, here we go.

This is obscene and barely-relevant discourse that I am only venturing into in order to respectfully answer you fully. As such, I'm putting the wall of text in hidden tags so this response can pretend to stay focused on what's important.

You don't need a "control" here. We have a rating system we use for the actual, completed profiles on the wiki, and that's how we determine what's appropriate. Specifying that he's as fast as Tails outside of that context is meaningless since we don't really, canonically know how fast Tails is, and it changes every game. For example, in some games he's as fast as Knuckles, and in other games he's slower (because in some games, Knuckles is faster than Sonic [lookin' at you, Sonic Adventure 2]). And even then, we don't know how fast Knuckles is, either. The only thing we concretely know is that Sonic is supposed to be the fastest, and everything else is open to interpretation. Pretending like Tails is some sort of useful standard is just that: pretending.

That said, we have chosen some arbitrary values here in our own little slice of Sonic fanon, and, as it turns out, you wouldn't be allowed to make a character that runs as fast as Tails flies, anyway. (Making a flying character that fast would be okay, but you'd otherwise have to have an excuse for the dude to be able to run that fast without getting caught by the wind resistance and just plain soaring out of control, off the ground.) The thing is, you couldn't have known that without getting into the specifics of the star ratings, which is a whole other mess that only comes after you get a character concept approved, anyway.

Basically, what I'm saying here is that no one really cares about what official character your fan character is as fast as because it adds nothing to the profile. That is why I believe you should focus on writing more interesting things about the character, such as endowing it with its own unique attributes, a more thought-out and deeper personality, etc... If you try to imagine who your character really is as a person, and come up with what makes him tick, then it will feel more alive to you, and more ideas will come to you naturally for what his purpose could be, what logical abilities or skills he could have, and so on, and so forth.

That said, I'd love to try to be helpful and give some sort of specific idea for you, myself, but at the moment, I don't have one. People who make characters that don't have built-in purposes can still succeed here, but they usually do so by getting to know folks in the chat, talking, learning about what's going on in the story, etc., then hopping in once they've got a feel for what's going on. (I did see that you visited our chat tonight, and you seemed to get irritated that nothing was going on in the five minutes you spent inside. If that was the extent of your patience, this group may not be a good fit for you. Just throwing it out there.)

It's up to you if you want to continue from here. Since it seems we may be at an imaginative impasse, I'll just mark you as a Beginner Member and call it a day. With that status, you can begin RPing without completing a profile, but you'll be under the Beginner Member restrictions mentioned in the how-to-submit-a-character thread. If you end up making a deep enough character concept that doesn't rely on nebulous parallels to official characters, we'll get you started on a wiki page and mark you as a full member.

Peace.

I think I'd rather try and make my character a bit better, then join, rather than become a beginner. Just my opinion. Maybe I should try and complete the profile. And I actually had to go, as my dog got outside without her collar.

Saw that you asked in the chat what was happening in the RP. One of our mods responded "KUNG FU SHOWDOWN." I apologize for this. (Sheff, you're fired.)

(Not really, but come on, man.)

Here's the story update thread. It hasn't received a whole lot of love, but hopefully it'll give a gist of what things have been like around here over the past couple years. Hopefully we'll get some more specifics in it later.

I revised it a bit, and I hope it's better.

> Frost is a know-it-all, think-first-act-later, goofball type of guy. Growing up in the cold of the north near Far away Holoska, and not having many people to socialize with, he doesn't make friends well, but once he has them, he won't let them down. He spends most of his free time tinkering with his customized Extreme Gear, his fly type board Frigid Iceberg. He's a pretty good mechanic; but he kind of rubs it in others faces. When he's not messing around with his EX Gear, he's in town trying all the foods he didn't have up north. His favorite types of food are spicy and sour. He'd say he's a connoisseur. Others would say he's a glutton.

Does your character have any purpose? (It's okay if you don't have this fully figured out yet, but all the better if your character does have an agenda or some sort of driving force to it to make it interact with other characters.)
> Would do what's best for his friends, and since he likes almost everyone, he can be very good to have at hand.

Does your character have an image? You can post it here, if so (as long as you follow the rules mentioned in the character guidelines). If not, please write a description of your character's appearance.
> Mostly black, has a few feathers poking out with white tips. Violet eyes. Green shoes with a white X on each, with silver buckles on the ends of the X. Green and white gloves. Basic body shape.

Will you be around to play your character regularly? (i.e. Keeping daily tabs on any threads you involve yourself in, and posting whenever it's your turn?)

Let's give it a go, huh? Wiki page has been started:

Frost

You can use your forum username and password to log into the wiki and edit it. If you find anything confusing (especially regarding star ratings) don't hesitate to ask. If you're unfamiliar with wikis, it may look kind of daunting at first, but it's actually not all that complicated. Just make sure you let someone know when you're done editing your profile, so we can skim over it, stamp it, and you can get started RPing.

With that said, welcome aboard. We used to poke fun at our Canadian and South Dakotan members for living in wintry wonderlands, but it looks like you've trumped them all with Alaska. Enjoy your status as the new king of the tundra.

Thanks, and I don't live in the tundra, I live in the Tongass National Rainforest. So continue to enjoy the Canadians and South Dakotans, because they probably still get more snow than us.

Edit: I went to the wiki and finished most of it. My only question is, where are most of the characters right now in the RP, so I can put something down for home, and not live, like, a thousand miles away. Other than that, It's done.

I would say sorry for keeping you waiting, but we couldn't have known to check it because your notification was only given by editing a prior post, and forums don't notify users about post edits. We figured you'd come into the chat or otherwise make a new post when you were done editing your profile.

Expect it to be checked sometime tomorrow.

The discussion tab of your character's article now contains its review. Star ratings have been tweaked to match given descriptions, and the approval stamp is on.

We've linked you to the story updates thread a few times, haven't we? Everyone is in Chun-nan. However, the next thread will probably take place on South Island, I suppose. If I were you, I'd just watch and adapt to what's given in the next thread if you want to get involved as soon as possible. (The current thread is in a high-action situation in a closed-off environment that would be hard to barge in on, so it's probably best to wait.)
