Never-ending headlights and infinite red taillights traced twisting, intersecting paths through the artificial valleys of a dark city of bright lights. They moved like glowing trails of ants far below the uncleaned plate-glass window, while neon lights glared straight in from across the street, above, below, and nearly all around. Even the black water just blocks away shimmered with the light of the rest of the city across the bay, disrupted only by the silhouettes of passing ships, themselves decked with lights. Yet, somehow, it still felt very dark; the outside bustle did little to disrupt the tranquil gloom of the hospital room, and its quiet, humming, bubbling equipment, clean white beds, and glossy concrete floors. It all looked strangely industrial for a hospital, but, in contrast to the factory-like appearance, there was no noise. It was past visiting hours, and no one seemed to be doing much inside other than sleeping — not that anyone in a facility like that cared, or really had any concept of "visiting hours" anyway. It was a former Eggman Empire medical care center. It had only changed hands some few days ago, so the only thing any different about it was that the Eggman logo and text had been ripped off the building, leaving just a bare patch and a big, spray-painted C in its place. It was still operating, and still accepting and treating the general public, but there was no longer any mention of the fat man anywhere, and that was a good thing for the most recent influx of patients. One of which was none other than everyone's favorite alleycat, no doubt followed by any other members of his band of misfits that either saw fit to tag along for company's sake, or just needed medical attention themselves. On that note, it was quite the medical marvel-- dunk a specimen into a tank full of blue-green goop, set the timer to five or six hours, and bam-- perfectly healed protagonist, cooked to perfection. Courtesy of Eggman technologies' love for making sci-fi regular sci.
Speaking of, the 'timer' on Ace's pod beeped a triumphant ding (yes, a kitchen-friendly ding from the egg-shaped contraction, the inventor indeed had some misguided sense of humor), and the liquid began to drain. The lids of his eyes slowly fluttered to life, and this tired old alleycat suddenly felt like a freakin' lion. It was the best rest he'd gotten in, quite literally, weeks, and it took all his sense of decency to not blow open the chamber door with a ki blast or something. (Honestly, he probably could if he really wanted to.) But after a second or two of beeps and boops, the glass-like door took care of itself, and soon enough, Ace was stepping out in all his naked, gooey glory.
"Wow," he half-whispered to himself as he gazed into his own palms, almost amazed beyond words by his body, and the liquid steel his blood had become.

Casey remained (pleasantly) ignorant of Ace's wet-and-sloppy predicament. A few doors down, and a short jaunt down a quiet hall, the hog's unspoiled appetite was being satiated with some purely passable cafeteria food served by a robot with no sense of taste. It wasn't bad, really; it was hard to mess up rice and vegetables, or so he reassured himself as he doused the dry meal with ever more sauce.
What was Casey doing there, anyway? Truth be told, he had his own places to go, and his own things to take care of. He didn't need to visit the hospital, and he certainly didn't tag along for the food. However, something, perhaps pity, or maybe just his good nature, compelled him to stick with the gaggle of lost strangers until they found their way, and so he did.
Seated at his table overlooking a view out a window much like Ace's, Casey looked to have been there a while. A pile of his personal belongings (no doubt set down by Latika, his ongoing porter even beyond the mountains) was right behind him, while a little mobile device laying next to his plate projected a volumetric display in midair just over the table, rattling off news videos — news that he had missed while out in the snowy wilderness.
"While it was once thought that the end of Dr. Eggman's iron-fist regime would bring about a return to life as usual, many are questioning whether or not this may only be the beginning of much greater problems to come. Following the fragmentation of the Eggman Empire caused by mystery-organization Chimera's successful coup, conflict has exploded into a three-way struggle for power. Attempts made by remaining G.U.N. cells to rebuild facilities and armed forces have been largely suppressed by near-continuous aerial bombardment from Chimera fleets, while Eggmanland, still firmly rooted in what was once the heart of Central City, has expanded its footprint largely unchecked except for by the resistance efforts of a small, but dedicated few, including Sonic the Hedgehog himself.
"The waves of this conflict reach well beyond the shores of the United Federation. For the first time in nearly a century, the Glastonian nation of Cape Norden has reached out to the international community with a plea for assistance following the theft of what the Nordenian government calls 'a unique and potentially hazardous weapon.' Though nondescript in any public forum about the weapon's precise form or function, the call for assistance from the legendarily isolationist nation is in itself enough to seize the global community's attention and cement the seriousness of the claim."
Somewhere in the middle of that report (which continued blabbing on with ever-increasing misfortune), Casey seemed to have slowed his chewing, then stopped altogether, staring as if contemplating something with great concern.

Breathing heavily, Mako suddenly darted into the very same room where a soggy and devoid-of-clothing Ace was standing and looking for towels and pushed himself flush against the wall.
Not five seconds later, Sir Corin walked by outside the room-- you could almost hear him waving his spear around -- yelling about wait, young knave, I still need to regale you on...
The shark stayed pressed against the wall until the sound of Corin's boots clanking on the floor began to fade away (perhaps he was going to go talk to the boar dude). Only then, Mako heaved a sigh of relief.
... Pause for three seconds, yelp, scramble, fling hands over eyes.
"H'oh geeze put a towel on!"
Perhaps an odd reaction, considering he, himself, was someone who walked around devoid of pants on a daily, if not constant, basis, but there was something about someone who normally wore pants not doing so. Especially when covered in medical ooze.
Aaaaawkwaaaard.
"Uh."
"... hi?"

Ace turned his head to the shark with a look of haughty distaste for a moment before he actually answered him. "Whatever, maaan!" he answered. "You walk 'round naked all the time. 'Sides," he said with his very best 'haters will inevitably hate' strut in the recently discovered towel's direction. "Y'can't act like you're not impreeeessed, heheh." All the while punctuated with the "sploch, sploch, sploch" of his footsteps. Truly, he was in rare form tonight.
He scrubbed furiously at his face, the first thing he washed off of the healing elixir, before tossing it haphazardly (but of course, accurately) to the rack from whence it came. "Now maybe if it was our good friend Eggman that popped outta that thing, you'd have the right to complain. But Iiiiiiiiieee," he said, stretching deeply with a series of pops and cracks. "Am the paragon of my race."
He sniffed, his nose proudly jutting in the air. He sniffed again, said nose pointing ever closer to the pit of his arms.
"...Or I will be after I take a shower."
Luckily, the good doctor at least saw fit to equip the healing room with an appropriate rinse-off station in the form of a few locker room-styled open showers, which Ace was all to happy to take advantage of. (The rooms were separated by gender, weren't they? It should be fine.)

"... thanks, but among other qualms, I don't exactly dig the covered in fur type," Mako said, rearing his head back in no small amount of discomfort at the cat's posturing. His voice was dripping sarcasm just as much as the cat's body was dripping goo. His eyelids slid half-down. "Guess that slime stuff had all of the Eggman ego infused in it, huh. Magical healing powers." Finger-wiggle to indicate magic.
Pause. Momentary silence. "So. Uh. ... ... ... I have no idea where anyone else is and I'm not going back out until I know that mister stabby isn't still looking for me. So. Uh." For all the times he had run into and in the vague vicinity of the alley-cat (did that mean he was a hobo, the shark mused) he knew him very little. ... so of course his first one-on-one experience would be now. Figures.
"So. It's, uh... good you're not, uh, dead. Seems like someone's got somethin' out for you. Or... somethin'. Th'heck's up with that, anyway," he mumbled as he cautiously stuck his head back into the hallway to peer around.

Though she wasn't as badly beaten up as some of her comrades, Ember was never one to pass up something free. A quick dip and it felt like she was fueled by the sun. Plus, her beak had only a light scar now; fully restored to its former glory.
A quick shower and freshly laundered clothes just sealed the entire deal. If all hospitals were like this, maybe she should fall from space more often. Munching on a few slices of yellow cheese, she roamed the halls looking for at least a known face. A face that wasn't under a fancy hat.
Hearing a yelp that was rather familiar, she turned into the room it came from as the last slice was shoved into her beak.
There was a choking sound not a moment later. Swallowing the food, she gave a few seconds to unabashed staring before snickering.
"Wow! Great timing on my part huh?"
Still chuckling to herself, she turned her face away. Ember was at least somewhat polite.
"Dang, that goo is like magic or something. I feel like a super star.

"Is magic goo?"
Needless to say, there hadn't been much to marvel at inside the cafeteria, so it was with a comically mis-phrased promise to later return that the rural fish out of water left Casey to his instant rice and frozen veggies, and set off to meander the hospital corridors as though she'd never been in one before. Well, one can probably guess how painfully accurate the simile was in the poor porter's case; indeed, in her isolated corner of the globe, the greatest medical technology she'd seen was adhesive bandages.
That being said, "magic goo" fit well into what Latika considered gawk-worthy. Unabashedly, she strolled right up to the only one of the three present who was still covered in the viscous wizardry, effectively blocking Ace's path to the shower stalls, all while leering with uncomfortable interest. Aaaand, like any sheltered, curious soul, she lunged, needing to experience the tactile sensation as well.
"Magic smell like soured po'cha."
One could only hope she wasn't looking to catalog all five senses.

The cat turned his gaze to the bird first, since she was the first to approach after all. "Ahhey! What're you actin' all surprised for?" He asked, throwing up his arms however briefly. "This is the room with the showers, idn't it?" He turned back to the showers, irritated glance lingering Ember's way before "Bw-huh! Jeez...!"
...Latika.
He blinked for a second, but was quick to answer. "Yeah, don't drink it," he spoke, complete with a pair of 'do not approach' hand signals. "Look, listen. Ladies? This shower area is for, men, of the... opposite sex." It was clear he was speaking primarily to the new girl, judging by the way he struggled for words that a younger student of the language English-speaker might find familiar (not to mention the way he pointed at himself and Mako to differentiate genders at the appropriate words.)
"You see? Me, him, men...?"

Lacking the need of medical attention some members of the ragtag group did, Geoff had been left with nothing but the hospital to provide some sort of time-killer. Yet industrialized hallways and Chunese attendants — the ones around when there weren't robots available — weren't providing much, causing the hedgehog to go ahead and take a well-deserved nap in the first chair he could find.
A bit more rested now, Geoff would be found wandering the halls in some attempt to find where his compatriots had gone off to. Without much trouble (except for a quick sidestep into an unoccupied room to avoid a particular caped figure), his aimless navigating soon brought him in hearing range of familiar voices. Approaching the door, the hedgehog took a quick glance in to clarify who stood within...
...aaaand promptly kept walking. Perhaps finding a nude, goo-dripping Ace being the center stage of attention wasn't his personal taste right now. Or ever.
With the image quickly being suppressed, Geoff, after another turn or two, unexpectedly entered the cafeteria. The robot eyed him — or at least faced him as best as it could — from afar, but the hedgehog ignored such an expecting look and beelined straight to the last familiar face available. This one at least wasn't covered in the aftermath of a strange medical treatment.
Slumping down across from Casey, Geoff appeared to deflate a little before directing his attention towards the device spitting out the news. It soon became background noise, however, as he glanced to the hog.
"Somethin' on your mind?"

Casey spared the hedgehog a fleeting glance and nod of acknowledgment upon his arrival, but otherwise stayed focused on what was in front of him.
"Our missin' train cargo's a global headline," he answered, nudging the device (and, in turn, its floating display) closer to Geoff, and making it replay for his benefit. "Looks like that, uh... capey... spear-guy? What's'is-name — he was actually tellin' the truth."
The hog took a moment to enjoy a couple more bites of mediocre cafeteria food.
"Oh, and in other news, the world's gone to crap. Well... it's already gone to crap. Let's say it's just gone to double-crap."

Folding her arms contrarily over her chest, Latika huffed indignantly.
"Show me where it say that," she challenged, confident in both of their inabilities to read most of the signage. "Just because you wake up here, you assume it only for you; coed bath very common in Chun-Nan."
And, whether or not she actually succeeded in making any kind of a plausible case for herself, the loris, evidently offended, spun on a heel, and turned to leave.
"Slimy, naked Ace want us go," she told Ember as though she hadn't been in the room, pausing to glance back at the other unclothed occupant in the vicinity. "Maybe we interrupt something."

"..."
And there stood Ace, left only to blink and twitch his brows as he stood dead-still, arms locked in place to where they were seconds ago. "...Okay," he admitted. "I kinda walked into that one." If he had a jacket (and it was painfully clear he didn't), he'd be popping his proverbial collar in recovery.
"Hyeah... seems like everyone wants a piece of me, huh?" he mused to the shark with a smile, twisting the shower's knob. "Heheh. Shame, too. I was trying to avoid that..." The rush of water he stood under was warm and welcome, his 'magic goo' accumulating nicely at the drain. He scrubbed and stratched at his headdoing the best shower work he could do with what he was given... but he paused. And took an amused, almost dubious glance at Mako, assuming he was still sticking around.
"Although... something tells me you know the same feeling?"

It wasn't long before a nurse strolled in. Perhaps it was a bit later than she should have, but given the nakedness of Ace, maybe it was timed that way, expecting Ace to already be in the shower. As she walked in, she kind of winced at the sight, looking away. In her arm, she held neatly folded clothes that greatly resembled Ace's usual attire, and a towel atop the pile.
The nurse doe walked over to a table and set the pile down, still holding onto a clipboard.

From the moment the girls had come onto the scene, Mako had been wondering how this moment could possibly have gotten more awkward. It kept escalating with every remark.
"I think this is legitimately the most awkward moment of my life," the shark remarked as the nurse casually strolled in. "My freakin' life. boy do I never want to hear the phrase 'slimy naked Ace' ever again"
He reflexively cast a look at Ace then quickly averted his eyes, staring at the wall. "Uhhh. You mean, like the universe having something out for me thing? Hey, at least you can actually put faces on the things that want you dead. I just have some sort of malevolent cosmic force." Cue fingerwiggle to imply magic/mysteriousness/et cetera.Meanwhile in the cafeteria Sir Corin strolled in just in time to hear him referred to not by name. "My name!" he said, in a voice that seemed to lack volume control, "is Sir Corin Reginald Sidney Theophilus Dupont Quincy, sirrah, and you'd do well to remember it!"
Note that he was barely within hearing distance of the conversation at the time. Regardless, he strolled on over and invited himself into a seat. He gave the device in front of Casey a snort of derision. "Ahhh, then I see that my predicament spans far beyond a simple matter of stolen invaluable national treasures! Hm, hm."
Wait a second, why was he allowed to carry that spear inside a hospital...?

To give Ace peace, Ember followed Latika out leaving snickering all the while. Catching up to the porter, she fell into stride beside her.
"So! Having fun in the 'modern' world eh? Hospital's aren't much buuuut prolly later you'll get to see some real fun stuff!"
Passing by a window, she glanced outside at the city with a fondess in her gaze. Though she didn't live in one as a kid, she sure enough loved a city with plenty of 'bustle' now. Neverending action, plenty of people, and nothing lacking.
The fact that it wasn't freezing was just a perk.
