Site Announcement Title

Updates Sonic Spindash RP is closed.Founded 05/25/2002 by three friends; ended 09/19/2012.
It pains me to say this, but we're done. Thank you to those who have participated and followed along these many years. We had a lot of fun, and your contributions will be remembered for a long time to come.
Strangers and visitors of the future, please respect what is ours. If there is anything in the form of writing or rules you'd like to borrow for your own RP, please e-mail me on the gmail account "onsoku" for permission. Chances are I'll grant it if you are a nice, intelligent person, and agree to just a few small stipulations regarding proper crediting method. But please, leave our characters alone. All fan-made, original, non-SEGA characters, character art, and concepts remain property of their respective creators. Please show respect and don't try to take any of them for your own use.
I hope that some of us will be able to move on and have some more fun writing hobbies in the future. No matter what, we'll stay in touch, and this group will live on, even if it has nothing to do with RP.
I love you guys. God bless.
-M

What is your character's name? > James Wynne
Species? > Porcupine
Age? > 34
Give us a couple paragraphs of general info about your character. For example, what's the character's personality like? What kind of things does he or she do? Why does he or she do it? (Please don't give us your character's point-by-point life history, though.) > James is tired, the experiences of his life having worn him out and left him empty. The weight of watching his closest friends die in battle or by his own hand over the years has left their scars on his flesh and heart. Despite all this a part of him still wants to make the world a better place so that people like him no longer need to exist.
The one ray of light in his life is his young daughter, Jenifer, who entered his life six years ago in basket on his doorstep. Originally he had intended to turn her over to an orphanage but memories of a moment of weakness prompted him to have a blood test confirming she was indeed his offspring. Her arrival turned his life around and he retired from bounty hunting to take up a more stable line of work. With bounty hunting being as lucrative as it is this equated to Stay-at-home-Dad due to a complete lack of a non-combat skill set.
Naturally Jennifer has learned how to cook quite quickly.
Her existence has lead to him developing a more upbeat manner despite his past. Generally he’s pretty rough and points out the mistakes others are making but he also has an odd sense of humour leading him to lamp shading events or action. This brighter outlook has also lead to his more non-lethal weapon choices.
Does your character have any skills or special abilities, a gimmick, or anything that makes it stand out as an athlete or fighter? If so, talk a little about it here. Be sure to include an explanation or origin story for anything unusual, extraordinary, or supernatural. > As a career soldier turned bounty hunter he has extensive training in martial arts and various take down techniques that utilize his stature and physical strengths and limitations to their maximum efficiency. On the flip side this also means he knows how to avoid striking vital points.
Many years ago while on a mission in the orient he sought his most fearsome foe, a bounty worth ten million dollars and wanted by pretty much everyone on the planet, someone who had once been one of James’ closest friends during his military days, Alex the Lynx. James barely escaped the battle with his life but he did manage to successfully land a mortal wound on Alex. As the two lay bleeding out, Alex fading faster, the Lynx handed his former best friend his sword, a sword made of a rare pearlescent Chaos infused metal that made it gleam with the colours of the rainbow and provided a boost to the wielders abilities. James never fully recovered from his injuries and his moves have become sluggish compared to his former abilities.
A birth defect has also rendered James unable to use Chaos energy from any conventional source. Even when he briefly held a Chaos Emerald many years ago he was incapable of drawing out any power. However he is still affected by Alex’s sword, only he refuses to use the weapon instead keeping it mounted on his wall out of reach of his daughter.
Overall his physical abilities aren’t all that spectacular, being pretty average in all physical fields even before his injuries from the battle with Alex slowed him down. Currently, combined with his having been out of action for a few years he is actually likely to lag behind the younger characters at least until he gets his fitness back up. The only thing that hasn’t dulled is his precision as that’s the only skill he has that’s actually helpful around the house (ie cutting food).
Does your character have any purpose? (It's okay if you don't have this fully figured out yet, but all the better if your character does have an agenda or some sort of driving force to it to make it interact with other characters.) > Mostly just protecting his daughter, yes this does include going to extreme measures like going to other planets if needed. He also seeks to find and destroy the creature that killed two thirds of his old GUN team.
Does your character have an image? You can post it here, if so (as long as you follow the rules mentioned in the character guidelines). If not, please write a description of your character's appearance. > James’ quills are quite long but considerably more limp then those of his juniors, this leads to the large rear quill brushing close to his body and reaching just past his tail. As a full grown adult he is also taller then his juniors by around half a head. In his ‘old age’ he has taken to letting the fur on his cheeks and chin grow out into a sort of side-burns and goatee look. His quills are red while his eyes are green. James also has three thick spikes of hair coming from his forehead that take on a miniature ‘quill spikes’ formation.
What he considers casual wear includes a red bomber jacket, a Kevlar vest and sturdy black pants he picks up from an army surplus store along with combat boots and a pair of armoured gloves.
On his back he carries a golf bag filled with various objects such as baseball and cricket bats, hockey sticks and even a pair of brooms. He also carries a large knife at all times which is apparently only for shaving.
His body is covered in the scars of his training and battles over his eight years of military service and six years as a bounty hunter. The only ones that still hurt are those from the battle that got Upsilon Six wiped out and the battle against Alex, the only other surviving member of Upsilon Six.
Will you be around to play your character regularly? (i.e. Keeping daily tabs on any threads you involve yourself in, and posting whenever it's your turn?) > Yes
Do you live in or near the Americas, or elsewhere? (It may be difficult for you to participate in any of the fast-moving sessions if you're only online when the rest of the group is asleep, so we ask this just to be aware of any potential problems.) > Western Australia (GMT+8, exactly 12 hours ahead of EST, meaning I can just wake up in the mornings)
Are you okay with having your character information and image on this website (such as on the wiki)? > No Issues at all
What is your name? (Don't post your last name! This forum isn't private!) > Daniel (If we have more then one, Charlie)

This character appears more balanced than the other, which is good. Certain elements make it feel more like some sort of anime character than a Sonic character, but unlike the bull-guy, there's no call to say "scrap it." Instead, it's the devil in the details; superfluous tidbits do more harm than good sometimes. Quote: The weight of watching his closest friends die in battle or by his own hand over the years has left their scars on his flesh and heart. Are we talking about adding wars to our Sonic-world-utopia RP history? Basically, what we want to know is how much fanonizing we're going to have to do to justify a tortured past. Quote: Many years ago while on a mission in the orient he sought his most fearsome foe, a bounty worth ten million dollars and wanted by pretty much everyone on the planet, someone who had once been one of James’ closest friends during his military days, Alex the Lynx. Blunt question: Why is this paragraph here? This magical rainbow sword story in the orient is like the big, wobbly zit on the figurative nose of this otherwise fairly okay character app. It doesn't match the rest, and feels like it suddenly whiplashes a serious soldier character into the realm of a tween-operated deviantART RP. Would it be accepted someplace like Sonic Cyclone? Yeah, in a heartbeat; their owner plays a "5-star GUN general" with a magical axe of fire. It's the refusal of such content that sets us apart from other groups. Quote: A birth defect has also rendered James unable to use Chaos energy from any conventional source. Even when he briefly held a Chaos Emerald many years ago he was incapable of drawing out any power. You're welcome to have him discover this later through RP (if he can get his hands on an emerald). Otherwise, one can't include contact with a Chaos Emerald or official character in a fancharacter's history here unless it actually happened in our story. Quote: ... techniques that utilize his stature ... Quote: As a full grown adult he is also taller then his juniors by around half a head. We noticed you were making note of how grown and tall he is. Judging by your last submission, we figured it would be best to out-and-out tell you now (just in case) that he isn't going to be allowed to be remotely DBZ-character-proportioned, nor human-proportioned. Sonic RP, Sonic-styled characters, you know. FWIW, since this character started as a hedgehog, you may find it useful to know that the average hedgehog in this series is 100 cm (and Shadow shows that this is normal for a fully-grown one as well). The tallest "normal"-shaped (i.e. not as wide as a truck) fancharacter presently in our story is Geoff, who is considered an abominably tall hedgehog at 140 cm.Quote: On his back he carries a golf bag filled with various objects such as baseball and cricket bats, hockey sticks and even a pair of brooms. When Greens suggested the Casey Jones approach as an alternative to walking around with a rainbow sword, he was being partially tongue-in-cheek, and partially illustratively suggesting something akin to it, not identical to it... Anyway, this character could be accepted. It's just facing a lot of the same challenges that the other most recent character did. (He's also a GUN soldier with a traumatic past.) The section about his physical abilities is pretty much okay except for the what-the-heck paragraph starring the Rainbow Sword and the Incredibly Illustrious Bounty, which comes out of the blue and otherwise seems to have nothing to do with the character itself. The tip I gave the other one applies here, too, I think: Make a character profile that describes more of how he acts, and less of why. Let all the "why" elements be discovered and explored through RP, and they will probably seem more authentic and less corny, and leave the character profile as a teaser to make people interested in your character, rather than a biographical history lesson (which often has the opposite effect, since it splays all the details of your character's life out in the open). If you still have a mind to try and aren't yet frustrated with our approach, you're welcome to reply to this thread with a revision.

Thank you for the response, I'll begin editting the mention parts and submit the modified app as soon as I am able.
Your apporach is... odd... since most sites expect a full backstory along with everything else, and it is hard to break that habit. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with what you're doing.

EXTRA NOTE: I had no intention of forcing a war backstory, though it’s not entirely impossible for there to have been one before Sonic’s time. However if the Admin choose for there not to have been then there wasn’t.
If there was no war James’ GUN team was horded to hunt a creature causing trouble for GUN and lost badly, four of them dying.
If there was a war… well it could have been from anything.

Mm, it is opposite to most places, but that is what we intend. Any ol' schmoe can write a dense character profile. I was doing mile-long sheets a decade and a half ago on AOL when I was just becoming a teenager. Rather than shoot for characters who already have massive histories that the RP world has to contort to accommodate, however, we prefer characters that end up being developed and grown the opposite way: by the RP, where they actively experience things, react, change, grow, and live out their stories right here and now.
In a nutshell, our collective view of character profiles is that they should exist to give others a brief, accessible overview (think "quick reference + trivia") while still leaving a lot of information unknown, like a "teaser" of what the character is about rather than an encyclopaedic biography. If every detail of a character's past and and motivation is outed in the profile, why should anyone be as interested anymore? So, we keep the details securely in our pockets and release them a little at a time through actual RPing rather than by writing an info-dump in the profile.
There are exceptions, of course, mostly concerning abilities, equipment, stats, and supernatural stuff—anything that relates to combat or possibly story-breaking elements, essentially. All of that needs to be in the profile for fairness and to avoid ass-pulls, or at least needs to be privately cleared with an admin. But otherwise? We build characters as we go, and try to collaborate with each other to make interesting history here and now.
Hope this helps clarify our weird approach. Maybe we'll put this on the wiki somewhere...
(Edit: Just noticed that you posted a new profile already. Will look later when other admin-posters are milling about.)

Taking a different approach isn't a bad thing, in fact I find it interesting. It'll just take a bit of getting used to.
Naturally I'll deffer to admin judgement on what few backstory plot points I threw in (I'd like to keep as much as possible, but it should be easy enough for me to mold it to fit what you want).

Hey, let's give it a shot. We'll start a wiki page for him. James WynneYou should have the ability to edit the page within a few minutes after this post. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any problems with the wiki syntax.
