Fifteen bat robots.
It didn't really seem all that bad. Eggman's animal-like flying robots were seldom armed, and these proved no different; Rock moved quite inflexibly into the fluttering pack with fists flying. A couple swipes were just to knock them away from a collision course with his face, while the two that followed were sharp one-two punches that connected satisfyingly.
The resulting "pops" of the fragile containment units breaking were even more pleasing. Gentle blue-green glows carried tiny little animals, held in stasis, to the ground in safety, while the broken fragments of their former prisons clattered to the dirt, carried some distance away by the sheer force of the punches that had cracked them.
He had always wondered about that. Why did Eggman build such a safety system into his robots? Maybe he wasn't completely cruel... At the same time, though, Rock couldn't help but imagine the various "lost" robots of the world, sitting for years at a time with little animals in them. Did they expire? Were they like canned goods? Would they still be "good" in ten years? Was there a pop tab on top you could press to check for freshness?
Oh well. No time to contemplate it. At least they weren't the "zombie" robots.
"Break'em and keep moving before reinforcements have time to show up," he instructed, following his own advice by continuing forward as best he could while batting away the (relatively small) threats.

Fearless leader didn’t have to ask Toby twice to jump into the fray. It sure didn’t take long for everyone to encounter a threat once they made it top-side, but Cotton was eager to prove his usefulness to the dubious monkeys. As Rock moved his metallic skull-cracking self forward, Toby leapt into the air, delivering a simple but effective kick to one of the clunkers, knocking it squarely into one of its brothers. Both bat bots fell the ground, sparking and sputtering. Upon landing, Toby pushed off the ground and rolled towards the downed badniks, keeping himself clear of the ten or so flappers attempting to take his head off.
Well, mostly… One of the little buggers managed to slice a hole in the back of his shirt with its wing. No matter, plan A was already in motion. Toby grabbed up the flightless flunkies, and jumped back up. Using them like a pair of cymbals, Mr. Daredevil conducted a symphony of scrap metal, smashing another bot in between the two already in his hands. It felt pretty righteous. Out of the rubble floated three perfectly unharmed small animals, looking more than happy to finally be out of their winged prisons.
Kyle, on the other hand, had a bit of a bogey at the moment, and was weaving in and out of trees to attempt to loose the jerk. “Kiba ju! Jami!!”
Not quite as helpless as he might have seemed, the little guy changed course right as he was about to hit a tree, leaving the bat bot on a one way crash-course to the corner of Pain-ville and… Tree… Boulevard. Stunned but not done, the mechanical critter tumbled about on the ground, attempting to get itself airborne once more.
”Oh no you don’t!!!” The larger of the look-alikes wasn’t about to have that thing come back and bite them in their butts. The banana colored boarder straight-out punted the wretched little screwball into a nearby tree, causing it to splinter and burst, with another tiny critter sailing down from the wreckage.
“Heh…” Toby grabbed the chao and ducked and the bot-swarm came back around for another dive. He glanced at the chao, grinning. “Nice job, dude.”
“Aba, Toba!” The chao grabbed onto the boy’s neck as he swerved out of the path of the incoming badniks.

Ever present-minded, Tails saw the light of opportunity dawn as the huge... metal... what-ever—apparently Metal Sonic—turned and let off a stream of plasma fire at the sprinting cat. As fast as thought, reflexes kicking in at the same time his adrenalin did, Tails dropped down two his feet and whipped around, lashing out at the robots legs with his still sodden Tails.

Between the three (and a half?) of them, a measly flock of fifteen metal bats that may as well have had Made in Chun-Nan stamped on their bellies wasn't going to cause much trouble, so like Toby, but not so much the brutally business-minded Rock, Jam dispensed with her share of the winged annoyances with a little more razzle-dazzle than the situation probably called for...
A behind-the-back ball lighting pitch here, electrified elbow strike there, followed up with a fancy forward somersault replete with perfectly timed EM pulse on the dismount... Yeah, she was showing off. A little. But no one could say she wasn't getting anything done.

Teck had no idea what a Metal Sonic, Silver Sonic, Mecha Sonic, or Wooden Sonic was for that matter, for he obviously didn't dabble in the affairs of the blue blur celebrity of which he oft hears about and rolls his eyes. Still, the threat was quite plausible nonetheless, so he jumped almost on reflex once Silver Sonic attacked, even though his ambush was meant for Ace, Teck was quite uncertain as to whether or not the range would also breach his own zone of comfort since this dude was packin' some heat.
Whether or not this model was in any way, shape, or form similar to its predecessors remained to be seen, but if it was, then it must've been a little slow on the uptake in spite of its rocket booster skates which served as its only viable mode of swift transportation, or in this, little purpose since it would be a trifle difficult to skate around on sand (assuming they're still at the shore). All in all, even considering his lack of knowledge on Eggman's robots, Teck didn't need a mastermind's wit to foresee that this particular mech's unwieldy bulk would inevitably usher in its undoing whether by Tails' agile namesakes, Ace's unpredictable utility, or his own dynamic ambushes. Indeed, he could smell the slowness.
"Take this, you brute!" He forewarned, forewarning in that first fateful rev... Breeeeeaaam.... BREEEEAAAAM.... BREEEEEEEEMM...
Speaking of dynamic ambushes, Teck saw that this was a lovely opportunity to use his trusty spindash - all hail quilled mammals! At the moment he was officially situated at the sidelines, some ten or so meters from the conflict between his comrades and their new silver assailant, but that was subject to change, and mighty quick to boot as Teck came careening toward Silver Sonic in an attempt to T-Bone it like a Winnebago to a Yaris just after he was (hopefully) struck by Tails, making it a double-whammy. Where's your third strike to cherrytop it, Ace?
Sadly, it was a double-edged sword, since no matter what the end result of his strike would be, in the wake of all of his revs in addition to his release was a dense cloud of sand that veiled the battleground in a cough-inducing haze to further complicate their situation.

Silver Sonic definitely hadn't forgotten Tails (they were still within close proximity of one another, after all), but it was clear the fox was low on the totem pole of annoyances--until that swing of those twin tails came. There was little the robot could do to avoid it, and ridiculously heavy and sturdy as it was, let it not be said that Tails didn't have some power in the two neckties on his butt. While it didn't jostle Silver Sonic away from where it stood, the impact buckled the robot at its knees, dropping it closer to the ground and sending further bursts at Ace from its gunhand way off target.
It didn't seem to like that. Or Tails. Or Tails' tails. This possibility could have been derived from how its big right, conventionally-fingered hand flashed out to grab at said tails with an iron grip. It was abruptly clear that the machine was by no means a slowpoke when it had to get down and dirty in hand-to-hand faceoffs. And were that little snatch successful, well...
Rule number one of launching an ambush: don't let the person or villainous spined robot know you're launching an ambush. Until then Teck had been neglected, but when he made it apparent he was jumping in, Silver Sonic would take appropriate action, by which this meant rising from where it was crouching and swinging the two-tailed fox like a tennis racket right off the ground in order to send the kid's whole body smashing into the speeding, rolling porcupine with sudden, literally Herculean might, as if the robot were playing the world's cruelest game of baseball.
Bulky and slow on its feet Silver Sonic II may have been, but it was not stupid, and it was becoming more and more evident with each passing second that it was very tough, and very, very strong.

Tails yelped in surprise as the arm shot down and clamped onto his tails like a vice, a few moments later he was flying through they air, speeding into a collision with whatever might have been in the way of his uncontrollable path.

He was so sure that his hit would connect, but he did not foresee that his new twin-tailed buddy would be swung into him like a bat. Silver Sonic II was creative, that was for damn certain.
Not that Teck felt it under the protection of thousands of lb-ft of torque, but still, his attack backfired and so he was deflected back off into the not-so-far distance he started from, landing in a not-so-dignifying plop on his tush. (He was aiming for a cool three point stance, but see how that worked?)

Ace had Tails to thank for having his chest still intact. As Ace dashed for cover, yellow balls of light filled the ground full of holes in front of his feet, spraying sand both dry and sodden meters into the air. The eruptions threw him off balance, and an attempted slide was soon turned to a slippery looking trip on his backside. However, he was still alive, still very much intact, and still in the right mind to defend himself. He scrambled up to his feet.
It wasn't a terribly difficult assessment to make-- This robot was built by Eggman. That said, it was likely designed with two purposes in mind: Crush Sonic the hedgehog, and his little fox too. Well, Tails was right here, and Teck seemed a sugar substitute for Sonic (half the fat, twice the limey). 'But there was one thing he couldn't have counted on,' thought the alley cat proudly. 'And that's me.'
"HEY!"
It wasn't long after Silver Sonic II caused grievous harm with a body, that a rock of all things, glowing blue and searing through the air came careening towards it's head.
"Up here, bright eyes!"
It was a sight to behold; Ace darted in a straight line along the coast, perpendicular to the mecha but always facing him, scooping up one beach rock with every step, and hurling it just before the next... Until a literal barrage of stone after stone after stone bore into the thing's titanium skull. Or whatever it was made of.

Then, a bad situation got worse. The cave openings not far from Ace, Teck and Tails began to crawl with robots—And not the good kind of easily-destructible robots Rock and friends were fighting. No, as skewed and unfair as it was, Rock, Jam, Toby and Kyle had pretty much wiped the floor with the fragile, traditional machines thrown at them, and were free to move forward. Tails and friends instead had the march of the freakin' penguins, in nigh-indestructible zombie robot form, coming at them.
But—They weren't attacking. For once, good fortune shone on them, as the machines took a fairly reasonable berth around the fighting group, rolling, scuttling, and rumbling their way into the ocean with their varied, mismatched forms of locomotion.
It was just that time of day. Eggman was deploying the forces to attack Central City again, and it so happened that their battle was near the path. Fortunately, Eggman seemed confident in Silver Sonic's ability to handle the trio on his own...
"You imps!" roared a grating, distorted voice from... somewhere. "Tails! Who are these... bums scratching up my shiny Silver Sonic?! That orange guy doesn't even look like a real hedgehog! Why didn't you bring Sonic?! I'll tell you right now, I would NOT have knowingly sullied such an excellent creation's reputation like this by pitting it against these... these... lesser mook friends of yours! WHERE'S SONIC?!"
And Teck thought he talked a lot.

Although Ace did make for a handy distraction, Silver Sonic II wasn't about to let itself get caught off-guard by the serval and his forehead-denting ways again. When it turned its head at the sound of that yell and found a speedy blue rock glowing its way toward the robot like a little jagged rocket, it reacted immediately. How so? Well, it was still holding Tails' two namesakes for one, so the fox would once again find himself used like a tennis racket to bat away an incoming projectile, though this time a much smaller one. As soon as the threat had been dispensed with, it seemed to grow bored with Tails, at which point it would mercifully "drop" the fox, if dropping him was the same thing as, you know, launching him at the ocean like a football.
The gunhand rose and began thundering again. At first it aimed for the rocks, the bright yellow plasma disintegrating the chaos-charged things in mid-flight, but it could put up a much higher rate of fire than Ace and his on-the-spot projectiles could, and it wouldn't take long before the serval would once again find himself in the path of trouble.

Fortunately, at some distance from the island the ocean was still fairly shallow—a huge, rippled sandbar pock-marked with starfish and broken clam shells, providing a reasonable shallow to float in while the fox regained some semblance of coherent thought.
Stars floated in front of his eyes, which he thought was funny because he had been under the impression that he was actually facing down. There was a brief moment of confusion involving an attempted breath of what turned out to be sea-weed imbued salt-water, before the light dawned and he thrashed himself upright in the ocean, gasping and spitting and choking and flailing about in a haphazard effort to find out where the beach was.
In the distance, a huge black shape loomed out of the water.
He rubbed his face with a hand and gritted his teeth, trying to avoid breathing too deeply. Something around his chest hurt, and the less he bent his body, he thought, the better.
He felt ill. He slogged forward through the water, stopping only once to keel over and let himself float for a few seconds until the world stopped spinning again.
Gradually, as land approached, the throbbing in his temples subsided somewhat.
At this point he let himself down into the water, floating in the shallows like a crocodile as he quietly began to pull himself forward towards the beach, pushing off of the sand underneath him, when the breaking waves failed to move him closer to the battle ahead.

Ace couldn't help but exhale a breath of shock and disgust as the cruel machine used the young Tails like a sponge. It was true that the thing's only mind was an AI, and taking umbrage against it for being effective would be the same as hating the clouds for raining, but Ace wasn't in the right frame of mind to consider such things. He hadn't taken this thing seriously a minute ago. That had changed.
But he was hardly in a position to be any more useful than he was right now as a short-lived distraction. He was literally attacking to survive, lucky that his rocks took priority over his own head, and the distance the rocks took before they were vaporized was shortening, quickly.
"TeeeEEEECK!" he yelled in desperation, knowing he was running out of time.
Either way, should help come or not, and just as the last stone he threw lit up a foot from his face, Ace managed to scramble behind not a rock, but a full fledged boulder just past the sand line. He sucked his back to the mass, his ankles were submerged in seawater. He panted, and he swore, and he twitched his head away from the chunk of stone the robot tore away with his guns. Finally, he took note of the loudspeaker blurting (really just untimely) nonsense, and responded in the hopes of buying time.
"MAYBE IF YOU CALL OFF YOUR GUARD DOG, WE'LL TELL YOU!"

The second to last bird robot bounced out of the arcing path of Rock's speeding, hooking fist, flying in no less than three separate directions. The final one found itself seized out of the air by his two hands, and literally broken across his knee, and discarded unceremoniously. Rather unlike Jam, he wasn't showing off; his movements were quite short, quick, and economical, but plain brutal.
With the threats eliminated, the white primate lunged forward into a run and charged through the underbrush, zipping around trees and through bushes, taking high, tromping steps to avoid tripping on roots, and hopping over low, fallen branches. A hill curved up almost vertically into a sort of natural wall in front of them, but in appropriate fashion, he ran straight up the incline as fast as his legs could muster, and launched into the air.
He had to kind of... kick and squabble ungracefully in midair to make sure he moved forward enough to not fall right back down the incline, but he managed to instead land on top, and keep going forward. (Sonic, he wasn't.) They didn't have much farther to go, though, because just past that point, the trees gave way to a huge clearing, filled with bright lights.
The stony ground fell off sharply. Rock stopped and stooped at its edge, and surveyed.
They were at the center of the island, and it was basically a gigantic, circular pit. Sinking farther than the height of the cliffs they had scaled to get up there, it appeared to go well below ocean level, yet it was hard to tell precisely how far down the nearly mile-wide chasm went, because it was filled on all sides with machinery, steam, smoke, and glaring, orange artificial lights. Gigantic pipes wound and coiled around like components of some sort of oversized heat sinks, and smokestacks jutted unevenly from metal structures, all shades of grey and reddish brown, decorated with yellow and black striped caution strips here and there around doors and hazardous equipment, and the occasional revolving yellow strobe. Catwalks criss-crossed the structures, power lines were strewn erratically, and flying, propeller-driven sentries, adorned with red gumball lights, fluttered and puttered about their patrols, while small, jet-powered aircraft circled like buzzards overhead. Sounds like heavy pistons chugging permeated the air, along with puffs and hisses of escaping vapors, and a nasty, sulfuric stench hung heavily.
The entire pit was full on all sides of things like this, stair-stepping downward steeply into the abyss in such a way that there wasn't really any natural rock left visible—Just an overgrowth of filthy industrial mess, from stacks, to open-topped chemical tanks, to boilers and turbines. There seemed to be something in the center, somewhere toward the bottom, but it was hard to make out; from the looks of the dim, reddish glow that flickered across all the lower structures, there may well have been lava somewhere in the smokey depths, too.

Somewhere in the chaos and tumult of all Jam's superfluous carnage, she'd closed a bit of the gap between her and their point-man, passing Toby and his dynamic accomplice in the mess of thick green. Rock's battle with the steep ascent was deftly avoided with a well-timed mid-sprint kick off the ground, followed by the tell-tale *BZZZRT* that announced a second aerial climb before dropping with a muted thud right behind their snowy-hued scout.
Without consciously considering it, the pink primate's mind had already decided it they were in for more of their previous course, so when the brush dropped off into cold, hard, industry located conveniently over what looked to be an active volcano, a half-exasperated, half-awed expletive tumbled out subconsciously with her breathy sigh. Squaring her shoulders, and setting her dirtied, gloved hands on her hips, Jam stared silently into the metal jungle, momentarily just trying to mentally make sense of it. Another frustrated huff suggested she wasn't terribly successful.
"Well," mused the monkey, with lofty, look what you've gotten us into sort of expression (which somewhat lost its effectiveness combined with her watering eyes) directed at the brighter of the pair. "What's the plan, chief?"
