Updates

Sonic Spindash RP is closed.

Founded 05/25/2002 by three friends; ended 09/19/2012.

It pains me to say this, but we're done. Thank you to those who have participated and followed along these many years. We had a lot of fun, and your contributions will be remembered for a long time to come.

Strangers and visitors of the future, please respect what is ours. If there is anything in the form of writing or rules you'd like to borrow for your own RP, please e-mail me on the gmail account "onsoku" for permission. Chances are I'll grant it if you are a nice, intelligent person, and agree to just a few small stipulations regarding proper crediting method. But please, leave our characters alone. All fan-made, original, non-SEGA characters, character art, and concepts remain property of their respective creators. Please show respect and don't try to take any of them for your own use.

I hope that some of us will be able to move on and have some more fun writing hobbies in the future. No matter what, we'll stay in touch, and this group will live on, even if it has nothing to do with RP.

I love you guys. God bless.

I was thinking about making a brief but poignant (I wish) list of friendly, non-rule tips and advice on how to get into an RP like this, to help make the atmosphere a little more... inviting, I guess, and less confusing.

Was there anything you guys wish you had known when you joined that would have been useful, or anything you think a new person submitting an app would benefit from knowing? I haven't been able to think of many examples yet, but then again, if I was able to, they'd probably already be listed somewhere. This is why I'm turning to you guys—to see if you've got anything.

I'll go ahead and get the ball rolling with one I just thought of, though:

  • Come into the chat! RPing is a social thing, and it's impossible to get meaningfully involved in the story without talking to other members. Make friends and get to know people! It makes things a lot more fun.

(and as much as I'm sure this will be an irresistible moment to crack jokes about the lovecraftian horrors of acclimatizing to the group, I would appreciate it if all replies have at least one serious morsel thanks)

If you're in a roleplay with someone else and your character is going to interact with them don't hesitate to talk to them if you have questions or idea.

Don't try to do a character profile half asleep.

And don't joke around when submitting a profile like calling your character a kitty. That's just stupid and shouldn't be done.

Though those are common sense stuff that I lack but now know.

Also shake Tony. That's good advice.

RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN

But my serious advice:

Don't be in a rush to get your app done or to get into the RPing part of the RP. It may take a while to get involved, but it's worth it, and don't give up if it doesn't work fabulously at first (like, say, having your character make his/her intro by being trapped in a water tank). It pays off to be patient! We're not exactly a fast group. (Okay, we're like DBZ in text form for pacing.)

also, I can be persuaded to draw your character for you if you lack art, and while it's not best, it is free. So yeah, ask me.

Also, never click on any images that Darren (Mechanization) links in the chat.

Give your character a personality with a will: while we try to include everyone in the story (and eventually do), it's not always possible to get everyone in the right place at the right time. A character with a bit of get-up-and-go is a lot easier to fit into the story than someone who is too timid or shy, or only in it for themself. While the introspective genius or talented recluse may be a key part of the story eventually, it's a whole heckuva lot easier to bring in a light-hearted doofus whose only talent is a strong tendency to poke things with a stick.

And now I regurgitate in a single list the suggestions made above, with only slight adjustments for absolute clarity.

Tips from Amanda!
  • If you're in a thread with someone else and your character is going to interact with theirs, don't hesitate to talk to them if you have questions or idea.
  • Don't try to do a character profile half asleep.

Tips from John!
  • Give your character a personality with a will: while we try to include everyone in the story (and eventually do), a character with a bit of get-up-and-go is a lot easier to fit into the story than someone who is too timid or shy, or only in it for him or herself.

Tips from Kazz!
  • RUN
  • RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN
  • But my serious advice: Don't be in a rush to get your app done or to get into the RPing part of the RP. It may take a while to get involved, but it's worth it, and don't give up if it doesn't work fabulously at first. It pays off to be patient! We're not exactly a fast group.
  • also, I can be persuaded to draw your character for you if you lack art, and while it's not best, it is free. So yeah, ask me.

Tips from Matt!
  • Come into the chat! RPing is a social thing, and it's impossible to get meaningfully involved in the story without talking to other members. Make friends and get to know people! It makes things a lot more fun.
  • Once you do get involved, be sure to be thick-skinned about things other players' characters say. That is to say, don't get personally offended if your character encounters someone rude or mean. What a character says does not necessarily reflect what the person playing it thinks. That's why they're characters. Conflict is the spice of life. Also, I emphasize this because I play more than one jerk.

Anybody got anything else to add before I pitch this into some sort of sticky somewhere?

Well, I learned that the hard way!

But on topic, NEVER jump right to character making and trying to make the best character evar. I've learned that by now.
Here's a whole list dedicated to making the RP playable, enjoyable, and complaint-free for newbies like meself!

1. Get to know your fellow RPers. This is very important in learning where and what to do to make a character who won't be considered a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu or avoid any rule-breaks. Put the rules into a document so you can see them whenever you need them.

2. Never throw chtspk around, it makes you look trivaly uneducated, and quite frankly, makes your posts hard to understand.
Here's an example of a regular post here:
Thundersail wandered the lush jungle, looking for something to eat, as his stomach rumbled like an earthquake and twister having fun. He wanders the almost blackened green trees untill he finds the rotting caracass of an Ankylosaurus with Velociraptors feeding upon it. He scares of the much smaller carnivores and rips into the warm, bloody and tender Anky flesh. He devours it and continues on his way, when he spots a Tyrannosaurus hunting. He passes the massive beast, not needing more wounds.
And an example of newb posts:
Player One: As Ardy grazed, he smelt allosaurs on the horizon. Knowing their tactics, he heads to the forest and enters the thick trees, safe from te preadatory dinosaurs. He grazes the wet ferns, the water releiving his dry gullet.
player two: te allosuar leped at ardy and killd him instantly an ate him
Player One: whut. I'm in the middle of the thickest trees, you can't kill me, let alone reach me. Plus you aren't even giving me a chance to do something about it!
player two: yes I can my charrie can do anything, and ur charrie sux, ply as a allosuar, they kik ***
Player Three (Admin) Player Two, I sugest you look at the rules before jumping into the RP like this. Plus you can't chatspeak here anyways.
player two: i can't understand u, spk english mother******!
*Admin has IP banned player two for breaking multiple rules consecutivley*
Player One: Thank you, admin! Here, have this chocolate chip cookie as a token of the RP'ers graditude to you. *gives admin chocolate chip cookie*
Player Three: Why thank you. Here's a cookie for you, for handling the situation so well: *gives another cookie to Player One*
Player One: Thank you, Admin! People like you deserve your status.

Oh, and that also bring us to Rule 4.
4: Never disrespect an admin, mod or even another player. It can lead to suspension or banning, maybe even IP banning. (If banning and IP banning are the same thing, I'll be quiet.)

5. Respect other players wishes. Never force people down your path in ANY locale.

6. Never kill another person's charrie without their permission or while their on a vacation or holiday. It's rude, as well as GM'ing unless the person says "You guys can kill this guy off now."

7. Never, EVER think you charrie is invincible and can blow up the universe. It won't happen. EVER.

8. If you beat another person in a fight, think of letting the wounds sink in to your opponent. It aint fair to kill everyone you fight.

And finnaly 9. Always speak with the player of a character if a fight scene should be needed to decide an outcome that satisfies both players.

Hey, ChaoticEmerald person. This is a little awkward. See, this is an old thread from back in February, and... you've never even been a member here. Plus, what you're saying doesn't really fully apply here. This kind of post could mislead new members into thinking you're actually an experienced member and that what you're saying is true when it isn't fully so. On the contrary, you're not only a non-member, but you also almost got banned for being an art thief. Please don't post anything else like this until you're actually a member, and you've actually seen how we function.

This does lead us to an actual good tip for new members: Don't misrepresent yourself as an experienced member. Don't speak as if you're an admin. It doesn't matter whether or not you claim to be one. If the way you talk to, advise, or coach people implies any status you don't have here, your attempted kindness may instead be construed as out of line and could get you in hot water.

Anyway, here's the breakdown.

Mostly true, but our rules are in a wiki on conveniently separated and appropriately labeled pages. They're easier to access in that format. Copying and pasting them into a document is ill-advised as it would make them harder to navigate, plus, your copy could become out of date as we continually update and tweak our rules and other important documents.

We do whatever we want in our chat. Sometimes it involves speaking in a goofy way for laughs. We're (mostly) adults here, and if we've succeeded in joining, we know we're all literate and have no appearances to keep up. But no, it is true that it doesn't belong in RP posts.

Really? For one thing, we're never going to accept a character named Thundersail. For another, your example ideal post is riddled with typos and spelling errors, mixes past and present tense (a big no-no here), and has grammatical problems. (And, obviously, it has nothing to do with Sonic RP, though I understand this is just a... bizarre example, I guess.)

We don't really have problems with this here, though there is already a rule that strongly advises everyone respect everyone else, regardless of whether they're admins or not. Admins here are not terribly elevated in our positions. We know we are nerds running Sonic forums on the internet where people pretend to be tiny fuzzy animals. People should treat us as they would treat anyone else. We will ban rude people regardless of to whom they are rude.

ChaoticEmerald wrote:

Yeah, see the consent rule. There are exceptions, though. The inactivity rules permit, nay, encourage full character hijacking in certain situations in order to preserve the life of the story.

ChaoticEmerald wrote:

See the consent rule. Contrary to this statement, characters can be killed against players' will in this RP, but said victims have to be incredibly inept and uncooperative out-of-character for it to happen. If, for example, your character is in obvious peril of his or her life and you refuse to have him or her do anything reasonable about it, or you enter inactive status without notification, the logical thing will most likely happen. Plot shields are only so strong around here.

ChaoticEmerald wrote:
7. Never, EVER think you charrie is invincible and can blow up the universe. It won't happen. EVER.

True and covered in the guidelines. But, this thread isn't intended to be a regurgitation of the rules.

ChaoticEmerald wrote:
8. If you beat another person in a fight, think of letting the wounds sink in to your opponent. It aint fair to kill everyone you fight.

Not even really sure what "Think of letting the wounds sink in to your opponent" means, whether figuratively, literally,... grammatically...

ChaoticEmerald wrote:

Not sure where you found that rule. It is best to cooperate, and highly recommended, but players can write competitively against one another if they wish. Plus, not every confrontation can make every person happy. This is an inevitability in combative RP.

I get the feeling that you were trying to do this to perhaps reintroduce yourself in a way intended to be helpful and show that you're a good RPer, but, I hope you understand my reaction. You have no place to give tips when you haven't even gotten a character accepted yet. You're not even old enough, are you? Regardless, until you've actually been a part of this RP, please don't act like you're an experienced member. New people giving tips to new people is equivalent to the blind leading the blind.

(Also, please do not use screen-stretching signatures on these forums, or your signature privileges may be removed.)
