Okay, as usual, we're cursed. This little thing's involvement was supposed to lead to something else, but Darren's electricity is still out because of the hurricane damage, so... being that there's no real estimate of when it'll be back up (it could be a whole week), we gotta move on, I guess.

The baron stepped around the mess of metal to the front door (which Luc was already holding open, of course). "I'm sure we have something for it. Let's take it inside before we all catch our death out here, hm?"

***

It was a peaceful enough night. The strange little creature seemed to come and go at will, slipping off whenever it lost interest in the party sitting around the fire in the main hall.

Dureau sat in his favorite, dramatic-looking, velvety, high-backed chair, as always. Rather than a teacup and saucer, he held a mug; the order of the night was cocoa, apparently. Extra marshmallows were set out for the chao to enjoy, along with a small potpourri of other things that clearly illustrated no one in the house knew what on earth to feed a chao. (See: Grapes, nuts, salted crackers...)

"I've never seen a chao like that before, but..." he said, trailing off with a long sip. He paused abruptly and mentally shifted gears. "Wait. If it is—well, even if it isn't—what was it doing inside that engine? I sincerely doubt it was... piloting it..."

That hesitation came from when the odd little ghosty-glob came and hovered right up in Dureau's face, making him look at it crosseyed.

Jack sat on the coffee table, sipping from her mug as she looked at the creature they where assuming to be a chao. "He must of had some purpose, power maybe? Either way I don't think he was put in there of his free will." Jack said looking away from her marshmallow enriched cocoa to the Baron. She was still eager for their conversation. But for the time, she said nothing.

"Power," echoed Dureau lowly over his steaming mug, brows furrowed. It was unclear to him how the little chao could have been used to power a machine like that.

Luc suddenly came plodding back in, adjusting his spectacles, and looking stately (but short) as always in his little crimson coat. "M'lord," he greeted more fancifully than usual, "please don't spoil your dinner with that cocoa."

"It's only a little cocoa," he contested playfully.

"Correction," said Luc, index finger erect, "it is a mug of marshmallows with a little cocoa in it. I know how you drink your cocoa, sir."

"... aren't that many..."

"We'll be serving dinner shortly," said the groundhog, turning to the others with a polite bow. "We're slightly shorthanded tonight, so it may be a moment yet."

Dureau slurped back a mouthful of marshmallows in an entirely dignified and silent statement of I'm-lord-of-the-house-and-I'll-have-marshmallows-if-I-want. After a somewhat labored swallow, he set his mug down.

"Ahem, right. Good. Now, as for Ms. Clarke and myself, we were hoping to have a little talk..."

"Yes, of course," Luc interrupted speedily, "I wouldn't forget about your date, heavens!"

The baron promptly hid his face by taking another deep drink from his mug. It was actually mostly empty.

"I have a lovely table prepared for you up in the keep's study," added the butler.

"Very good, Luc," he murmured sheepishly into his cup without lowering it from his face. Luc departed.

The talk about the 'date' didn't fly past Ember as she sat before the fire with her own drink. Perking up at the mention of dinner, she tried not to snigger when the groundhog mentioned the date. Glancing over her shoulder, she gave Jack a hearty wink and an amused expression. She had the kindness to not outright call her out at least.

Or call them 'cute'. Though it was hard not too.

A smile crept its way across Jacks face, followed by a deep blush at the mention of the date. She raised a hand to her cheak and tried not to pay any attention to the glances or winks sent in her direction. Honestly, the former Sheriff was a little nervious. Jack hadn't been on a date in quite some time.

"As much as I'm lookin' forward ta dinner, I'm conserned we ain't made alotta progress but'er suspects now know we're lookin' for'em..." She looked thoughtfully at the ghostly little chao. "The biggest question we've got is what they need all these people fer, but not'ah chao. What could they need'em fer that ya couldn't hire folks ta do... Somethin' dangerious? Medical testin' or maybe somethin' they need expendable labor fer...?"

Her 'gears' so to speak where turning but hadn't produced an answer yet. Plenty of theories and conjecture but there was too much she didn't know.

As no chairs were fit to accommodate his size without the risk of collapsing under his weight, Tank stood in the corner of the room, likewise enjoying his (wonderful and comforting and delicious) hot cocoa as the others were. But he rarely sipped, and stood watch behind the others like a spectating gargoyle. He almost seemed too pre-occupied to even enjoy his tasty beverage, (although he did crack a subtle grin at the mention of dinner between the Baron and the Sheriff) but in truth, he was simply lost in silent thought of the same prospects the others spoke of. He just kept all that thinking in his skull.

But suddenly, his steely composure seemingly melted away, and he piped up to speak:

"Sherliff," he pleaded cooly. "Hyew haff worlked deeleegontly seence the son had rrrlisen. Aye can watch over thee chao. Yew can efford to enjoy won deenur."

Jack turned her attention to the massive turtle, she couldn't stop herself from smiling at him. "I reckon yer right..." She let him have that one. Turning away looking down into melting marshmallow's and cocoa.

"I just can't ignore that thar's alotta people missin' and scared families wanting ta know what happened." She added. Jack glanced up from her mug and looked at the snowy colored Baron. "The distraction's nice, though. I mean n-not that yer distractin' Dureau, well ya are, but I mean yer-I... Uh-Nevermind. Ferget I said anything."

"Yes, yes, let's just go eat," said Dureau mercifully quickly as he set his cup aside, stood briskly, flicked his cape out crisply, and gestured with an extended hand.

He addressed Tank with a quick "Thank you, Señor—enjoy dinner," then set out, presumably along with the sheriff, vacating the main hall.

***

It was a reasonable walk to where they were going. The old home was large, and the "keep" was actually a separate structure within the castle's curtain-walls. If only briefly, they still had to take a quick, frigid jaunt outside, though the cobblestone walkway was thankfully covered by a canopy, ice-free, and well-lit.

The keep was the most castle-y looking part of the place, put simply. All stone, squarish, fortified, and tall, it looked older and much more rugged than the main portion of the home. Oil lamps and even some torches gave the inside a warm glow, but humidity hung thick in the cold air, and the stone steps leading up through its interior glistened with water.

"Mind your step," advised the baron as they went up."The corridors and stairs are always dank in this old place. Stone, you know."

The top floor was much different, though. It was nearly grandma's-house warm, and looked... comfortably lived-in. Large, ornate rugs covered the floors, and some nice tapestries were hung for decoration and insulation. A fireplace crackled and flickered, giving the room a cozy glow, and adding to the light of a lamp or two. Two of the walls were loaded with bookshelves; the ceilings weren't extremely high, so the shelves easily went all the way to the top. Some more ornate shelves held some interesting relics and trinkets, a few swords hung from the walls, and a very large portrait of a well-dressed family of four ermines—a man, a woman, and two boys—was mounted in a very obvious place on the wall, between two windows. Not much to see out the windows except frost build-up and one's own reflection; the night was inky-black, and it was brighter inside than out. Aside from that, there was a large sofa, a desk with a reading light, and, of course, their table with two chairs, pulled into the center of the room. Obviously, there was no TV or anything remotely entertaining in a modern sense, but plenty of knick-knacks to peruse. (There was a phonograph, though! It was something.)

"So. This is my... 'leave-the-baron-right-alone' room, you could say," he explained with a broad gesture. "Take your coat?" he offered.

The golden griffin set her mug down brushing her hair away from her face as she stood then followed the ermine out of the room and up towards the keep. Jack only slipped twice on the stairs up to the comfortable keep. When they finally entered the warmth of the barons keep, or ridiculously large study, depending on how you look at it, Jack came to a stop and looked around with a grin. She almost immediately started to walk around the room in a slow circle looking at all the trinkets and such.

"It looks like yer up here often." Was the first thing she said, still smiling. She came to a stop in front of the Phonograph of all things. "Oh, What does the baron like ta listen to? Hmm?"

She leaned over the device looking over the record, She knew a phonograph when she saw one, but not how to work it.

Dureau was hanging his cape and hat and smoothing down his hat-hair when she inquired about his music. "Listen to?" he echoed. He took pause, and appeared subtly amused, maybe surprised, that she would inquire. He drifted over and began thumbing through the row of records for something to spin.

"I must warn you," he began in a jesting, but quietly warm tone, "'The Baron' isn't nearly as interesting as you may have been led to believe. Or, I shouldn't be, to a... what is it, now? A philanthropic, world-adventuring,... mystery-solving, celebrity-hero officer-of-the-law?"

Sorry I forgot to respond to the question earlier.

She giggled at the charming ermine as he put something on the phonograph. "Unfortunately, My reputation is terribly misleadin'." She replied humbly as she shrugged the coat off.

"And I ain't solved this mystery, yet." she amended though still smiling. She didn't feel quiet so awkward with the spectators gone. Dating wasn't entirely alien to Jack, it'd just been a long time, and the rusty sheriff didn't need an audience.

He had produced a worn vinyl from the row. Its label looked cheap and poorly applied, cracked beyond readability. He placed his record on the phonograph, flicked a switch, and set the needle down on its edge. Crackling came from the one monaural speaker for a few seconds; he just leaned there with his hands on the cabinet as a sort of boppy, waltzy, yet dark-toned folk tune started playing.

"It's natural. Reputations usually are misleading, some way or another," he observed, tone a bit glum, but eyes fond as they watched the album spin. "—Both good and bad ones alike. And, as much as I would like to... continue to use this information you want about Deverell as an excuse to get to know you better than by reputation..., I know it isn't fair or productive."

While Jack was apparently feeling less awkward, Dureau was a bit... more. He straightened up and turned away from the phonograph to face her more directly. "In other words," he sighed in conclusion to his ramble (which he must have felt was only growing more awkward), and scratched at his brow, "I just want you to know: you can ask me anything whenever you decide you feel like it. I don't want you to feel like you have to go through some... song-and-dance routine to get information out of me."

Jack looked seriously at the baron, her head falling to a cant as she listened to him. She smiled sincerely at him, approaching the baron and putting a hand gently on his arm.

"Dureau," Her hand slid down to his, to take it gentle in hers as she spoke to him. "I would'a come to dinner with ya without any pretenses." She admitted freely to the ermine. "And what I wanna know about Deverell and you seems 'bout on par with the the general goal of gettin' ta know you."

"But iffin' ya'd like we can start there, and then continue to get to know each other. That's just fine with me." She smiled still at the Ermine, trying to lay his troubles to rest.

"Is that you an Deverell?" She said pointing at the painting (she assumed it was painted anyway) with the two boys and their parents.

Dureau's expression eased; he fell silent. It wasn't until a few seconds after the soft-spoken griffin had touched his hand that he realized he had forgotten to keep that whole "breathing" thing going.

He blinked once or twice, darted his focus to follow hers toward the painting, and belatedly nodded as if only then realizing he had been asked a question. "Y— ... yes," he both sighed and smiled, and turned more fully toward the picture. "That's Deverell on the left. Those are our parents, of course... I believe he was about nine, there. And I, a year younger."

"Awe. Yer adorable." she blurted before she had time to process what she was saying, of course she immediately turned a little pink. "uh, were... are... yeah."

She kept a hold of the barons hand in hers as she too turned towards the painting. "So, what happened?" she pressed, Jack didn't like having to air out the barons laundry like this. But the griffins feelings for the baron had her fearing that whatever he had to tell might have some baring on the investigation. She hoped for several reasons that it was merely a personal matter he didn't want to be public knowledge.
