This branch of the story is continuing from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=192

The ARK had been remarkably silent for years. A forgotten relic.

Then, turned on by Dr. Eggman, the Colony had erupted from its hidden moon shell. It had been transformed, overnight, into a nightmare—part super-weapon capable of scrubbing the Earth from the solar system, part out of control meteor dropping into the Earth's atmosphere—to enforce the suicidal death wish of the crazy old man who had grandfathered it.

Then Sonic had saved the day, and it had become boring and quiet again, and generally forgotten by the world. The weapon system for destroying the planet was powered down moments before it fired, and the genetic abomination that dive-bombed the planet with the station in tow had been destroyed. The space station had no further purpose and had, in essence, gone back to sleep.

GUN Technicians had restored local function to some of the more basic services—life support, shielding, and the ability to maintain orbit—that had been damaged in the freakish incident, but the rest of the station had very quietly drifted into something like a computer coma. The ARK was a sleeping giant, now.

The only renewed interest in it came with Vince's extravagant leasing of its lower levels as a sort of cosmic raceway for an event he was holding. GUN had suffered over the past months. First, Prison Island had been melted into glass by Dr. Eggman, then Granite Island had been vaporized in what had been publicized as a munitions stockpile accident, during the escape of Coop the eagle. Either way, GUN was struggling to get itself back onto its feet, and its budget had been stretched to unimaginable proportions.

The offer of a substantial amount of money by a wealthy commercial business owner to lease the area of space labeled Meteor Herd, for the opening station of an extreme gear race, was an extremely welcome way out of a financial crisis that had rapidly been blossoming into a financial catastrophe, and GUN had leaped at the offer. Meteor herd was, essentially, a cloud of rocks situated around a large, slightly warmer chunk of rock, and no particular danger to national security, so it had been opened with very little trouble.

Meteor Herd lay on one side of the ARK's tremendous, apocalyptic nose-gun—officially called the Eclipse cannon—the weapon responsible for vapourizing a third of the moon. Now deprived of power, it was now a very large, ugly chunk of metal, and completely harmless. On the other side of the doomsday nose was another segment of space, which was not named, and was not especially well known, and was largely hidden from the outside by a battery of shields.

The zone of space had been turned inside out by the bizarre array of experiments done to it during the ARK's active years of service. Filled with artificial planetoids; giant floating capsules containing gravity wells; and other hideous mis-applications of science, it had been rendered unusable and very nearly unnavigable by the collection of space-warping experiments that had been deposited there. It had not been opened to the race, but it was such a bizarre and esoteric branch of scientific endeavour that GUN had not taken any further precaution than a very light security detail. They had assumed, for the most part correctly, that no-one in their right minds would ever try and get into the place.

It was, quite correctly, assumed to be strangest place ever, but Astrid and her Team—comprising the entire infinitesimal fragment of the sane population interested in getting into the place—were flying right to it.

The most accessible point of entry to the area was at the top—near to the space-station's surface itself, where the shields were weaker, relying on the armour of the battle station to deflect most angles of approach.

Outside of the ARK's gravity field, the small shuttle Astrid had piloted from the space elevator's docking station clung to the under side of the station, behind a huge armoured lip that extend down from the space station's edge where it had once framed the artificial moon that had disguised the facility.

A huge shield node was fastened to the space station, directly in front of the shuttle. Quietly projecting a pie-shaped segment of gently distorted space across the area, it was their entrance point, assuming anyone knew how to break through it.

[For anyone with as poor a memory of the game world as Matt has, here is a video of where they are going. Mad Space: They are breaking in at the top, near the ARK, and dropping down to the bottom to do science to one of the horrible gravity-breaking faux-planetoids. They will park their bad selves, while the science commences, in one of the huge old floating boxes that look like cargo containers.]

I played that level all of once because it was the worst level ever.

"We got everything?"

Rock stood in the cramped prep room, near the air lock. A sturdy door to the rest of the ship was behind them; a sturdier door to the even-more-cramped airlock was ahead. Equipment lockers abound. The room was at about its maximum capacity (mostly thanks to Coop), but there was still enough room to maneuver well enough to put on helmets and the like.

He slid his own on over his head—a silvery-colored metal helmet, the upper front hemisphere of which was a gold-dusted dome lens, which hid his face entirely. The mouth section was strange and alien-looking, with hoses that ran to his compact life support system backpack, but most of the breathing apparatus assembly was quickly covered up by some kind of sturdy, scarf-like band of fabric he stretched over it, presumably to protect it from debris.

His getup was familiar overall. It was the exact same dark blue uniform he'd worn into the GUN base. The only difference was that he had a skin-tight black biosuit concealed underneath it (visible only in a couple of places, where there were still bulletholes in his jacket), which connected directly into his bulky gloves and boots. Yes, he'd thankfully come mostly prepared, so he didn't have to blow much of their budget on himself. (He had ultimately only needed the biosuit, life support system, and helmet.)

He slung that same, battered old duffel bag across his shoulders. "You guys'll wanna make sure you put some regular clothes in your kit," he added, his voice made electronic-sounding by his helmet. "We'll have to find or make shelter if we need to spend days here, and you won't wanna spend the whole time wearin' these."

Me too

"Man, I've been talked into some crazy $%@&," Ace was quick to state, cradling the helmet of his not-nearly-as-dignified, old-school, 'baggy-ass' space suit. "But I ain't never been to space before. Not really."

Already, his collections were secured in the backpack around his shoulders, but not so secure was the cat wearing it. It was clear that he was very much caught out of his element, wearing his outfit about as comfortably as he would a blanket made of broken glass. "What's the story here, anyway? We goin' out space-camping?"

Coop stood in his gigantic, hazard-orange space suit, feeling slight less able to move than he normally did. There was an uncomfortable rustling every time he moved his legs, and he could not feel his arms against his sides. He would not have been the happiest man on the mission, in any case, but now a titanic frown split his face in half like a deep sea trench.

Most of this was shielded from anyone else watching by the visor covering his face.

He stood silently in the corner of the locker, eyeballing the rest of his crew members.

Eventually, he saw fit to grunt across the radio.

"The inside of the area," he gestured at the wall, on the other side of which was an empty vacuum, and the large, oddly-shaped shield generator they had to disable, "is pressurized. Means we don't have to wear… these, all day."

He shifted uncomfortably, promoting a distant whooshing noise from his thighs.

"Also means I'll be able to fly stuff up and down in there—we're going to be heading all the way to the bottom."

"You heard Sciensquirrel," replied Jam to the cat's query, with a hearty, punctuating slap on the cat's shoulder. "We dunno. Maybe, maybe not, but like Rock said, it's better to be prepared."

She bounced a rather amply stuffed backpack on her shoulders emphatically, before setting it down on the floor next to her silvery opaque-lensed helmet, and opened it with a sharp, *zzzzzip!*, revealing among other things, a travel pillow, a paperback book titled, So Now You're A Zombie: A Handbook For the Newly Undead, a set of poker chips and playing cards, a bag of marshmallows with a box of graham crackers, a ball of rubber bands (???), an mp3 player, and several pouches of astronaut ice cream. Save for a pair of fuzzy bedroom slippers, there wasn't a trace of clothing to be found in the pinker primate's provisions.

She cast a sweeping glance down at her super snug-fitting biosuit, bearing Rock's suggestion in mind, and took a deep, laborious breath, wishing in truth that she'd not assumed that just because it was new, it was comfortable.

"M'sure I'll be okay," she said in a tone so unconvincing, she was compelled to immediately change the subject; Thankfully, Coop beat her to it. "Right, all the way down, so..., uh, we should really get going, huh?"

Rock looked, did a double-take, then a disbelieving triple-take at Jam's frivolous packing, then gave her a look she could not see through the visor, but could surely imagine. It wasn't long before he was cramming rations into her pack. "You can at least carry somethin' useful for us," he muttered. He also shoved some of his heavy tools in, too, to relieve his own loadout weight, since she was carrying such burdensome pillows and dehydrated ice cream.

With that, he seemed satisfied. They were prepared. Hearing Coop talk, though, reminded him of one other thing.

"Oh. Hey, Coopmore," he called to the burly bird member of the troupe. He maneuvered his way through the cramped space (possibly snagging himself and his bulk of tools and weaponry on Ace's baggy-saggy-butt space suit in the process) to one of the equipment lockers. "'Fore we go—couldja c'mere a second?"

*Clack, k'chack* went the metal locker, and with a rustling and rattling, out came a familiar sight: one sawed-off grenade launcher, slick and black with gun oil. Wordlessly, he presented it to Coop, and tried to hand it off with as much subtlety as he could, given the circumstances. It had a sling attached to it that was also acting as a bandolier, though, so the clatter of grenades made subtlety a little difficult.

The space suit containing the eagle turned. The coated visor made it difficult to see what was going on behind it.

There was silence for the space of a few seconds. Then the space-suit reached out and put its hand on on the weapon. There was another second's silence before Coop closed his grip on it, and took the grenade launcher back.

Coop examined the launcher. He snapped it open at the breach, and the space suit inclined towards it as he bent at the waist to get a better look over the lower rim of his helmet. He turned it a couple times, and looked down the inside of the barrel. He looked at the reverse side of the breach, glancing at the firing mechanism.

He closed the launcher again. The space suit bobbed, slightly.

"Thanks."

Without the need for additional equipment nor dawning of life support systems, Tau had already departed the shuttle at the first opportunity and was standing a short distance away from the air lock.

Tau had seen to it to preform all the needed modifications to his body prior to meeting the others in the space port before the flight, though much of it wasn't really noticeable. Among the notable modifications however, was an assortment of bright glowing cerulean blue lines adorning various parts of his limbs and body. They weren't as much for aesthetic design as they were for long range low light identification .

While the others were preparing in the airlock Tau had detached a small oblong reconnaissance drone he had previously prepared for the mission and was running a quick warmup check on the drone, including a com check.

The drone zipped about both Tau's location, and the shuttles, but wouldn't travel much farther then that. All the while rambling both out loud and to a direct channel to it's owner.

" Happy birthday me! Wait....I had one the other day...
Ooohhhhh.. Wasat? space? .. Space?! We're in space?? Woooohoo space! ! Finally!.. We're in space! I get to do space duties!

Sure enough, Jam didn't need X-ray vision to know that grinning sheepishly was highly appropriate as Rock, contrastingly dressed to the nines, evaluated her packing foresight, and found much to be desired.

Rather than extolling the many uses of rubber bands of zombie non-fiction, she dipped her head in acknowledgement, offering a brisk salute, and a "You got it, boss," that didn't do well enough to quarantine her smile from her tone. The monkey stooped quickly and fluidly, retrieving her large, bulbous helmet, and flashed a subtly amused wince at Ace, before pulling it over her head.

Upon going back down for her newly supplemented backpack, however, what was clearly supposed to be a smooth, easy motion stopped short from the unexpected burden with a strangled grunt. The biosuited simian made a heavy-handed spectacle of hoisting the load onto her back with far more effort than even she likely had to expend.

"Holy hell, Rock," she complained theatrically. "I ain't a friggin' camel."

The serval shot Jam a curious, brow-raised glance, but inwardly laughed it off as quickly as he could. He was pretty sure he'd never been given such a genuine hearty slap on the shoulder by a girl before, but assured himself it was alright knowing it was Jam that had done it. The meaningful silences between Rock and Coop ultimately meant little to him, and same for the interactions between Tau and his handy little drone. All it meant was that the group was getting closer and closer to do... whatever it was they were going to do down there. For a fleeting moment, he considered offering Jam a helping hand with her abruptly corpulent baggage, but oh, he knew it'd be rejected on the spot.

So instead, he merely answered her wince with an amiable shrug, and gingerly equipped his own helmet, testing out how its weight affected the balance of his head by rocking his neck back and forth, and then in a circle. He didn't like it, of course, but he didn't complain outside of a sneer.

"Well," he stated. "If I got this helmet on right, then I think I'm ready."

Rock's visor hid his reaction to Jam, whatever it was. (It wasn't hard to imagine that he was probably amused, though.)

His voice came amiably through Ace's headset in electronic form as, suddenly, the monkey had a hold on the cat's helmet from behind. "Just gotta clasp these," he explained. Several clicks followed. "Now you probably won't die."

And with that, Rock turned away, and became the first to decide he was ready to go and get on with things. He strode into the waiting airlock, and got just one awkward step through the door before he popped off the ground and went drifting toward the ceiling ("whoawoah,"), twirling in a very slow-motion backflip, and awkwardly catching himself against the top of the chamber and the wall with his outstretched hands.

"Gravity control ends here, a'right, good to know."

He adjusted himself around with a little help from some wall-mounted grips while he waited for the others to pile in.

To have been so wantonly burdened by Rock's additions to her pack, Jam certainly seemed to adapt to the load quickly, or else, she simply forgot to continue bellyaching once go-time drew increasingly imminent. As she silently observed the final preparations of those around her, the reddish girl shifted into an inadvertent "monkey see, monkey do" mode, and at the more seasoned space-faring simian's assistance to Ace, her own hands flew up to the lower rims of her helmet, feeling around for anything that felt like it needed to be connected to something else.

She'd continue to fuss with and check her sci-fi wet suit a moment longer (although without really being certain what she was ascertaining), but right around the time of the uniformed primate's gravitational warning, Jam coincidentally found everything to her satisfaction, and raced for the airlock like it was a ball pit.

A very professional, but thankfully understated, "Yeeheeheeheee!" may or may not have transmitted across the channel as she dove past the threshold and into authentic, novel weightlessness (and probably Rock, too).

Coop's space suit watched Jam race for the airlock, then slowly followed suit. With a couple rolling steps, Coop made his way inside the airlock, where he began to gently detach from the floor. The rocking momentum of his last step carried him into a slow roll that shortly had his feet on, for all intents and purposes, the ceiling.

He kicked off from the ceiling, and came to rest just inside the second airlock door, where he hung in a corner, waiting for the air to drain out of the room.

The llama was well prepared for this day. She was in need of no equipment for such a mission, she needed only to make some modifications to her suit. She snapped on the last piece of armor before she secured her helmet, bright red rings moved slowly around the cabin as she waited for the others to enter the air lock. Finally she proceeded forward after Coop entered. She stepped into weightlessness and immediately grabbed a railing along the side and pulled herself along with little effort. Either the quiet llama was very well prepared or had done something like this before. Either way she didn't appear too far outside her element. Along with her armor Tracer was also carrying a duffel bag on her shoulder, most of it clanked as it moved and floated on her arm, more then likely she too didn't have much in the way of clothing in it.

"…Hah," said Coop, eventually.

The suit turned slightly to angle at Tracer, and then stopped, as Coop put his hand on the wall again.

"Here we are, huh? …Space."

To anyone listening, it might have sounded like he was addressing the whole group.
