Updates

Sonic Spindash RP is closed.

Founded 05/25/2002 by three friends; ended 09/19/2012.

It pains me to say this, but we're done. Thank you to those who have participated and followed along these many years. We had a lot of fun, and your contributions will be remembered for a long time to come.

Strangers and visitors of the future, please respect what is ours. If there is anything in the form of writing or rules you'd like to borrow for your own RP, please e-mail me on the gmail account "onsoku" for permission. Chances are I'll grant it if you are a nice, intelligent person, and agree to just a few small stipulations regarding proper crediting method. But please, leave our characters alone. All fan-made, original, non-SEGA characters, character art, and concepts remain property of their respective creators. Please show respect and don't try to take any of them for your own use.

I hope that some of us will be able to move on and have some more fun writing hobbies in the future. No matter what, we'll stay in touch, and this group will live on, even if it has nothing to do with RP.

I love you guys. God bless.

As was discussed in the chat, I'd like to see if we can get Randall retroactively signed up.

I've updated the bracket again with a couple small changes, plus a Tony revision, and all that good stuff. It miiight be the final bracket, but I dunno. Depends on if anyone else joins in.

Anyway, we're at the point where you can do the "qualifying" matches I spoke of in this post. These are purely optional. I've already done one with Rock. If you want to write one, post here and say that you intend to, then go ahead and do it. If you don't, we'll just assume your character won and made it through to the first real match.

Once the first part of the tourney begins, we may be skipping over some more stuff just to keep things short and fun. Specifically, not everybody has a match-up against a player-character—some in the bracket are just empty slots to be filled with NPCs. That said, you can write the match yourself you want to, just do some highlights from it, get someone else to play the NPC opponent, or skip it entirely. Any option is fine, as long as you communicate what you're going to do at some point.

Now, time for some real rules for the matches, since not everybody knows boxing.

Boxing Rules
Clothing:
Boxing trunks are required [even for characters who don't normally wear pants, so that there is a visible belt line] and shoes must be soft (so that foot-stomping is not a valid tactic). Female contestants wear tank shirts/athletic tops. Gloves are inspected immediately before the match begins, then sealed with tape by the ref so no objects can end up inside them.

Illegal blows:
There are like, a billion rules for this. I'll just say it really simply: Use punches, and only punches, and never hit anyone from behind. If you want the specifics, click below.
• No kicking, kneeing, elbowing, headbutting, biting, or ramming
• No striking with any part of the hand that is not the knuckles (i.e. no backhanding, chopping, or slapping)
• No striking an opponent from behind at all, especially in the back of the head ("rabbit punches")
• No striking below the belt (If struck below the belt, the boxer has five minutes to recover. The boxer who did the hitting will receive a penalty.)
• No grabbing or grappling, and no hitting while holding an opponent trapped in place
• No throwing punches while holding onto the ropes.
• Striking a downed opponent may result in disqualification.

Knockdowns:
If knocked down, you have ten seconds to get up. If knocked out of the ring, twenty seconds. Click if you're curious to know more.
• A knocked-down boxer has ten seconds to get up, and cannot be saved by the bell.
• If knocked out of the ring, a boxer has twenty seconds to get back into the ring and on his or her feet.
• The standing boxer must go to the farthest corner to wait for the opponent to get up.
• Accidental slips do not count as knockdowns.

Unusual Fight-Ending Events:
Probably things that won't come up in this RP. (Ending because of accidents, injuries, etc.) Move along unless you're just that curious.
• If the fight is ended because of an injury caused by a foul (such as a headbutt), the boxer who committed the foul loses automatically.
• If the fight is ended because of an injury caused by an accidental strike (such as an accidental headbutt/collision), the fight is declared a technical draw, and no one wins.
• The referee can end the fight if he thinks one of the boxers doesn't have the strength to safely keep fighting. (Technical knockout, or TKO)

Other Rules:
Don't clinch, don't get acrobatic.
• No clinching [This is that "hugging" thing boxers do. What's happening is one boxer is putting his weight on the other and getting close enough so that he can't get punched very hard. This gives the clincher an opportunity to rest at the expense of his opponent, though it is against the rules. Penalties for this are rare, however.]
• No kneeling, crouching excessively low, high jumping, or any form of acrobatics. [This is mostly necessary because we're dealing with Sonic characters.]

How Scoring Works:
Don't worry about this. Tony and I can probably handle any scoring stuff if it honestly comes down to that. If you just want to know, though, click.
Each boxer starts each new round with 10 points. The boxer who loses the round (according to the judges' opinions) loses 1 point. An additional point is lost for each time the boxer gets knocked down. Points may also be deducted for any rule-breaking. Simple enough. The goal is to not lose points.

If there are any questions, let me know. What I want you guys to take away is this:

1. Get ready to play your first fight at your earliest convenience (when your characters aren't busy adventuring or meeting Vince or whatever, anyway).
2. Communicate if you intend to play the "qualifier" fight. Otherwise, move on to the first real fight you see for your character in the bracket.
3. If your character's first match-up in the bracket is an empty slot, you have the option of playing the opponent yourself, or skipping the fight entirely and saying your character won.
4. If you're matched up against a real opponent, then you gotta play your fight or forfeit.

These things don't need to be long, 'cause we don't want anything to drag on, so just have fun with it and work together to have some kicks and giggles and comedy or drama or whatever. Have fun.

Due to complete lack of response, I'm assuming no one is doing their qualifiers. Let me know if this is not the case.

Anyway, attached is the current bracket.
Attachment:

Definite fights that should begin soon: (in no particular order whatsoever)
  • Juke vs. Buddy
  • Mary vs. Randall

Fights with empty slots or NPCs:
  • Wild Badge vs. NPC (Can be skipped)
  • Rodolf vs. NPC (Can be skipped)
  • Jack vs. NPC (Can be skipped)
  • Jabari vs. NPC (Can be skipped)
  • Ace vs. NPC (Can be skipped)
  • Rock vs. NPC (Can be skipped)
  • Flex vs. NPC (Can be skipped)

Completed fights:
  • Sonic vs. Velo
  • Ritchie vs. Walter
  • Murdoch vs. Quinton
  • Tank vs. Mako
  • Sheffer vs. Jacques
  • Ember vs. Roy

In case you're wondering why there are so many empty slots, it's because of the restrictions of having an actual bracket. If we made it a layer smaller, there wouldn't have been enough slots for all the characters. So, the first round has some filler.

If your fight is in the first list, get together with your partner and get cracking as soon as possible! My one request is that you guys do not write them entirely as PM collaborations. Please strongly consider playing them out like normal threads. That'll keep things from getting completely dull around here, give everybody something to read, and leave some room for admin-folk to help out if there's any need for NPC refereeing.

Feel free to skip the banter and start the thread from the first bell ring if you like, and skip chunks of the fight as you see fit to keep it interesting and make it flow quickly. If you want an official-sounding intro for the fight, I'll be plenty happy to help out by starting the thread and NPCing its opener for you.

Whatever the case, please reply to this with a simple "I'm ready" or whatever if you have read this post and are ready to start soon. If you want me to make the thread for you, please mention it in your reply. Note that we'll have to mark any non-responders as forfeit and move on if necessary, so please don't make us do that.

If your fight is on the second list, you can opt to skip it entirely. If you intend to play it, please reply and say so. If you don't, you don't need to say anything.

And that's all. Reply pl0x.

I think... I'm ready. Ritchie versus... Walter.

And, could you start the thread, pretty please?

I may write out some Murdoch vs. NPC, just to get some cheat-ass goodness flowing.
Or not. Depends on how dry it is and if we need something to read in the meantime.

Totally gonna do it. Dibs on the match after the oh-dear that's going on now.

Since I need to wait to have Mako to run away from the ring screaming.

Not to put undue pressure on anybody, but this thread about the boxing event started on November 1st, and we're already about to enter the new year. If no one else is going to go this round, then we'll have to start deciding the outcome of the matches to keep this from getting any more bogged down than it already is.

It doesn't have to be only one match at a time, for the record. If you'd like to start your own thread, or do it as a minor log, or in PMs, or whatever, then post the results, you can. You can even do it while your characters are participating in (or, alternatively, stuck in) other threads, as long as there's no chronological timebending involved. You can even forgo intros and just begin the fight from the ringing of the bell, no unnecessary hullabaloo.

In short: Any "required" (player versus player) matchups that haven't at least started and shown some kind of visible on-forum posting by Monday will most likely be decided by admin-people, except in cases where there's some OOC reason for it. (But for us to know about it, you have to communicate it—there's that nasty "c" word again.)

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and I know a couple of you already have messaged me, but, well, if you have, then this doesn't apply to you. So nyeah.

Alright, we're going to stop the current boxing thread where it is. Sheff & Jacques' fight marks the end of the "First Night" of Round 1. The un-RPed characters' fights will take place on the second night. To represent them, I'll make a very short thread with some highlight-reel-like-stuff.

Afterward, we move to Round 2 of the tournament. Look for it to begin Wednesday. I'll have a list up soon for who is going up against who!

SECOND STAGE!

Definite fights that should begin soon: (in no particular order whatsoever)
  • Murdoch vs. Ember
  • Tank vs. Wild Badge
  • Ritchie vs. Buddy
  • Jack vs. Jabari
  • Mary vs. Ace (Randall is assumed forfeit because of no-show)

Completed fights:
  • Rodolf vs. Sheffer
  • Velo vs. Mr. Danger
  • Rock vs. Flex

As you can see, the field has been narrowed immensely, and for the most part, all that remains are player vs. player fights.

If you want an intro like the ones I did last round, post here or PM me (so that I can remember, rather than telling me in IMs or chat, which I sometimes forget). If you'd rather cut straight to the chase immediately, then by all means, feel free to dive directly into the fight at the ringing of the first bell in some PM stuff until the thread gets up.

Two big fights down. Anybody itching to go next, or has anyone been working on one in PMs or anything and almost ready to post it?

This feels like it's been going on for a while, but we're near the end. After this round of fights is over, the next round is half its size, and very few people will continue to be involved. Meanwhile, I'm hoping we'll be accelerating the action around the actual boxing, and involving more characters in it. Back to adventure-mode.
