Rock stayed quiet until the SSD officer went on her way. Once it seemed like no one of concern was in earshot, he mumbled: "No wonder you walk around this place with that constipated look on your face. With all these people lookin' down their noses at guys like us, you'd think we were wearin' propeller beanies, or somethin'."

Teck spoke only over his shoulder, for he was still too fixated on the portrait and wondering whether or not the very man they were waiting for was whom he was staring at every brush stroke of as they conversed. Even still, he couldn't resist a quick followup, "I thought I felt like a second class citizen outside of this place!"

"Sir," at long last he turned his back to the canvas of art, advancing on the suited n' booted kitty with his arms folded across his chest. Teck tried to emphasize as much of a formality as he could, which for him was like second nature despite his dirty and weathered appearance. "With all due respect, we've waited here for several hours - if your commander and chief will not be here, then it's okay to tell us, we'll understand. Quite frankly, I think most of us are just pleased this crisis has come to pass."

Rekk let out a low sigh as he watched Tally walk off, and turned his glance over to Rock, momentarily; the difference in his expression was almost as if he'd dropped his suit jacket and loosened his tie right there. "First off, don't call it 'constipated'. Secondl-" He was interrupted by Teck entering, and just like that, he was right back to Mr. Secretary. And Mr. Secretary looked to be growing increasingly agitated.

"The president and his family were evacuated shortly after the attack began - if you want to see him, you'll have to watch a press conference. In the meantime, I need you both to tell me everything that happened out there."

Rock gave Teck a look as if the guy had some horrible growth coming off the top of his head.

"Hey, y'know, you're not counted in 'guys like us,' and I don't think I was talking to you, either," he stated with noticeable irritation. He was just as soon looking back at Rekk, though. "Every freakin' hedgehog thinks he's important enough to meet with the president now, huh?"

Without any prior warning whatsoever, it was around then that one of the SSD troops, one of the doofy Capsule Trooper guys, wandered into the room. And for reasons that not even career scholars and Toukisian philosophers would ever understand even with years of research time available to them, he had an airhorn in his hand and he quite promptly blew it for two whole seconds straight.

"May I have your attention please," announced Joe. "I have to cycle. OH SHI--"

He tore off from where he was standing and out of the room, very nearly losing the gigantic blue foam cowboy hat on his head in the process. Two angry-looking army MPs ran in through another door and out the one he'd gone through.

"Ah, well, excusing the unbridled grace and civility of that ooo-ooo-aah-aah screamer over yonder, I didn't know this! Ehm, I thought we were going to discuss what happened to the president himself - quite, quite sorry for the interruption, mate," said Teck in a light stutter, backing away from Rekk. From then on, he resumed further silence and continued to inspect the portraits...

Until...

"By the way!" He began enthusiastically, a single finger pointed in grand heed. "I heard the Central City scientific research department was studying the genetic similarities between Advanced Animals and our normal...lesser... jungle and forest dwelling brethren - I think I have a very good specimen on which they should examine. Isn't that right, Mr...? Bah, it doesn't matter!" He sardonically wafted and continued, "I shan't speak too lowly of you, lest you begin lugging your feces whilst howling hysterically like a rife... ... ... ah, well, whoops!"

For a solid minute he wore a cheek-to-cheek grin before it suddenly plopped into an angry scowl when he concluded with a light, "Feh," and retreated to a nearby seat and settled in.

"One of you going to speak up and answer the gentleman's question? I wasn't around through all this bloody hysteria..."

The honk of an airhorn blared over Teck's voice for a second—Or Rock would say it might have been Teck's voice over the airhorn, being charming as he is, but either way, he was so enamored with the spectacle of the CT that he could only spare glances at the porcupine for a few of the seconds where he was getting chewed out.

What was he saying?

Playground stuff, Rock thought quietly to himself, smiling almost gleefully at the completely ineffective string of insults. He had struck a chord with the porcupine—A delicious, painful chord, one that he'd be sure to remember if he ran into the guy again. Rock was antagonistic; he very nearly got off on that sort of thing.

"Rogerz, you mind if we take this conversation into a side room or somethin'? Y'know. Away from the special eds?"

That included Elegant Joe.

With the gentle bouncing of the luxuriously plush couch accepting the orange porcupine's weight, Teck did what Joe had miraculously and inexplicably failed to do. Without warning, and with a jolt that almost had to be exaggerated, the previously slumbering primate shouted a disoriented, "Huh?! What?!" and jerked bolt upright with an inadvertent flare of her shield, singeing the cushions and anything (or anyone) else unfortunate enough to be too close.

If that were the extent of Jam's rude awakening, her ego would call it a good day, but in fact, she juked sharply off the sofa and fell onto the floor with a painful-sounding thud, which segued into a painful-sounding knock when she hit her head on the polished coffee table on the way up, and blurted a groggy, but none too polite word.

Her fur askew, her eyes lined with dark circles, and her clothes in a general state of disarray, she looked far worse than she ever did before her several hour nap as she glared irritably around the room in search of the source of her disturbance.

But she almost seemed surprised when she saw precisely whom she'd probably just startled the living daylights out of, coherence seemed to return to her within a couple of blinks.

"S'you," she muttered blearily, stifling a yawn. "Tech...no... dude... guy."

The yawn won out.

"Where is e-e-every...body?"

"B-BUGGER n' BLAST, SS-STREAK!?" He screamed when he was jarred with that high voltage current of her's. It reminded him of only one person from long ago whose name he had just finished rolling off his lips; his surprise replacing any bit of anger he might have developed from her inadvertent attack.

His heart racing, he returned to the seat cautiously and offered a half-smile, responding, "Eh... 'ello. They're all still here. An airhorn was just blown, they want us to listen."

Slowly turning away and glancing to the ceiling, he awaited their orders, declaration, speech, what have you...

It took a hefty amount of effort for Rekk to not give into the increasing urge to start yelling some very unprofessional things at those gathered around him. Luckily, he managed to keep his cool, and instead just pointed at Jam and then at Teck.

"You two. Don't go anywhere I can't find you. I'll be back in ten minutes." He then grabbed Rock by the arm. "You, come with me." He said, and started to drag him off.

He then paused, and dragged him in the opposite direction of where the MPs chasing the crazy robot had gone. Once they were gone, he shot a look at Rock.

"Can you not associate me with you and then in the same breath go on to say a bunch of racist crap about hedgehogs and porcupines and mice in general? It really doesn't make me look good."

Rock was the one who suggested going somewhere in the first place! The look he gave Rekk was incredulous, but in a sort of amused way as he snapped his arm loose from the cat, and more voluntarily followed.

"Racist?" he spat laughingly. "I ain't racist, I'm just sick'a all these spiny brats with bad haircuts who think they're all that because'a Sonic."

He propped himself on the arm of a nearby chair and crossed his arms.

"In all seriousness. These guys running around, playing hero... They're no Sonic the Hedgehog. After what I saw out there today, there's a lotta people who's gonna get hurt—Worse—if everybody involved doesn't start acting real serious. We've never dealt with this kind of thing before."

It was pretty interesting how very quickly sentience and composure seemed to return to the perturbingly pink primate when being spoken to authoritatively. Jam acknowledged the cat's order with a stiff salute and a fervent nod, before deflating rather unceremoniously once he was out of sight.

"Don' see no airhorn blower," she mumbled thoughtfully, sparing a distracted glance or two around the room while she stuffed her feet back into her shoes. As she went about collecting her scattered gloves, hip pouch, and random effects, and intermittently rubbing her head, she continually seemed fixated on a doorway on the far side of the room, which opened into a brightly lit tiled room.

"You gimme a holler or some'n, f'you hear 'im or anyone else comin'."

With that, despite Rekk's very clear, very stern-sounding instructions, the mischievous monkey leapt lightly over the charred sofa (quite a feat, considering its sizable owner), and conspicuously tip-toed into the tiled room.

"... sure will," with a roll of the eyes, Teck gave in and hushed his erstwhile remark in regards to how they were told to sit still. Really, could he stop her? Ever logical, he let Jam fulfill her curious tendencies whilst he continued to sit and patiently wait. Lucky for him, a quick downward glance revealed the latest issue of Autoflavor lying vacantly upon the cherry wood coffee table - looks like one of the officials was a gearhead. Not that Teck was interested, but better to read than sit there and twiddle his thumbs. Not to mention, he was always eager to learn, and so he folded his legs in a most continental posture and amused himself with the humorously-written articles regarding disc brakes on page 44.

Yet even the stunning photography of these machines couldn't stop his mind from wandering into the realm of wonder as to why he was even here. Should his day have proceeded with some modicum of normality, he would've either been at a fast food joint enjoying a cheeseburger before heading home or just plain heading home. He focused on these thoughts, longing for them so much more than sitting here reading about disc brakes, measuring erections with the monkey, or awaiting to spew the details of a crisis that he, from the get go, actually had no knowledge of until it was too late and his stratagem in handling it was compromised. Indeed, looking back he already began to decipher his harebrained tactics and felt like slapping his forehead - but better to just let it pass. In the meantime, let's move on to camshafts!
