Too busy for Sonic the Hedgehog and his technically savvy fox friend? Hardly. Seconds after the automated storekeeper had finished it's customer service spew, the doors that led deeper into the lab slid opened and a raccoon stepped through the doorway, looking at the famed hero of South Island, grinning from ear to ear.

"Ah... er.. I..."

He chuckled to himself and shook his head. He took a deep breath. "Stay cool, Hoji..."

"Hi... I'm Hoji." He said as he extended a hand to the hedgehog, "And let me say...it's an honor to meet you... But I can't help but wonder what brought you here...?"

Hoji may have been a hero who had his own gift shop...but he was a nerd at the core. Having Sonic the Hedgehog walk through his front door was a child-hood dream for him.

Sonic wasn't the type to be too disarmed by strangers approaching him like a celebrity. His brows went up and he turned and smiled, ready to greet the raccoon, when he quickly put two and two together and realized this wasn't just a random passerby. That blue and white stripey tail—that was the same one that jutted out of those Wild Badge resin figures in the slightly-nerdy gift shop from a minute ago!

"Oh, hey-hey," he said, jolly enough. A good, firm heroic handshake later, and it was time to spill the beans. (He was suddenly glad he had listened to Tails, and not gone busting in like a one-man SWAT team.)

"We were just chasin' emeralds, and our radar led us here," he admitted honestly, shooting a thumb toward his orange pal with the device.

He followed the hedgehog's thumb to the fox. He nodded understandly.

"Yeah, I met Tails in Yellow Desert..." He said giving Tails a friendly nod, before looking at Sonic again, "Ever since Eggman attacked Yellow Desert, we've been chasing emeralds as well."

"And we do have one." He said, confirming the radar's reading. Sonic was a known vanquisher of evil, so Hoji saw no reason to hide the fact.

"Yeah!" Chimed in Tails, "It was showing up really strong on the emerald radar, you could probably see it for hundreds of miles on a real emerald detector! This is just a miniature one." He stretched out his arm, and the cuff of his glove slid up to reveal a small, chirping device, no bigger than a wrist-watch, strapped around his wrist.

"The Chaosol emeralds are really powerful, though. It'll be dangerous keeping them here!"

Hoji looked over at Tails as he voiced his concerns about the dangers of holding onto an emerald in one place for too long... Valid as they were, Hoji was confident that it'd be safe and gave Tails a smile.

"I understand your concern, Tails... But I wouldn't worry too much about this emerald." He said, glancing back the way he came, "But if you're still not convinced, I might be able to organize a tour for the two of you."

Sonic pondered silently while Hoji and Tails had their exchange. He wasn't exactly a planning type, himself; maybe he had realized this.

"... We don't really have anyplace safer to keep it, ourselves—and I heard they're dangerous to carry around," the hedgehog finally admitted, palms upturned. "If you're sure you've got it all under control, then I trust you." He put his hands on his sides, and looked toward the door. "I'd rather get searching for the next one."

Tails glanced over at Sonic as the hedgehog spoke, and then looked back at the raccoon.

"Yeah, that's why we're here. The emerald detector picked up a signal here in the city, and we wanted to see where it was in case it wasn't safe! We're kinda having trouble finding the rest of them, though. I think their signals are too distorted to really get a lock on them. The only reason we found this one was because it was so far away from the rest! I think it has something to do with the pulse frequency of..."

The fox's brow furrowed for a moment as a new thought hit him.

"...Hey! How'd you find this one?"

Hoji nodded as Sonic spoke, and then Tails popped a question. A question that may have been a little bit over Hoji's head. He was drawing a blank. But he was sure that Dr. Henshin explained it at some point.

He lowered his head with arms crossed over his chest, one hand raising to scratch the side of his head with elbow resting on his other arm. Trying to recall Henshin's explanation.

Finally, he looked up, "Ah, I owe it to Dr. Henshin, my...mentor of sorts. We have a huge budget for this sort of thing... He had multiple remote drones scanning signal locations all around the island."

"Ho-ji!" called an irritated voice from beyond the door. "Hoji, I rlequirle your asseestance. These acc-orlsed lrobots keep haiding mai rrrrlestling equeepment and they weel noht follow mai--"

It was only when Tank actually opened the door that his sudden halt came, as his eyes beheld the guest appearance of two heroes their superior.

"...S-Sah Sah Sah--"

And he crumpled to the floor on a knee, much akin to a knight may to his king, bowing his head, as if unworthy. "Soneek and Tails! Hyou honor me weeth hyour prlesence."

Annnd, with the arrival of the giant, extremely humble and honorable luchador, Sonic's train of thought took a piledriver straight into oblivion.

The hedgehog looked to the fox wide-eyed and blankly; the look was returned, the stunned fox stiffening his shoulders in pronounced discomfort. Sonic sufficed to kind of awkwardly bow at the waist with a big, unsure, but sincere smile, while nodding a couple times with a tepid wave. "H-hey, nice to meet you, too, uhh..."

It must have felt a little awkward. That was surely a first, even among fan reactions, at least from somebody who looked big enough to be able to break him in half.

Ding.

The elevator had finally arrived at the lobby floor, Sheffer marveling how high the building was. The doctor must be more successful then he thought, having not really noticed how large the place was when they arrived the day previous. Nor had he'd seen the lobby yet, having followed the giant tortoise after a few moments in hopes of getting some time to himself outside, his board in his possession, anticipating a chance to go for a small ride before Henshin's 'training' began, a certain shark having followed him, possibly with the same intentions. Fortunately for the hedgehog, the air-powered device had fallen into the said doctor's hands back at the underwater base when it'd washed away unexpectedly.

As the doors slid open, Sheffer took the first few steps out into the lab, and then past another set of doors, his board tucked under his arm as he examined the lobby area. He stared blankly at the super-hero-raccoon inspired sushi and stores for one moment, before directing his attention near the center of the room, where he saw a large mass of shell facing him, and just beyond that...

A blue hedgehog.

Sheffer paused, frozen for only the smallest of moments as he processed what he was seeing. It appeared as though he was watching with some curiosity, his head tilting slightly before giving a quiet "Hm..." and continuing on his way to the small group now forming in the middle of lobby, a hint of a grin on the edges of his lips.

"Ayyye, em Powar Mask," he announced proudly, and stood tall, as if hoping to impress his guests (lacking all but the glorious shining lights of hope beaming around his person). "Fellow plrotector off justeece. Hyou have already met my... colleague, Hwyuld Badge. We are in the plrocess of amassing a team for the sake of finding and plrotecting these new emeralds."

Some ways behind Sheff, a fish cried out.

"DUDE, WHERE AM I GOING!?" he bellowed, obviously quite tremendously lost among the plethora of things to look at, pausing particularly at the WILD SUSHI BAR. An eyebrow cocked, he treaded carefully around the skirts of the premises, likely thinking of the doctor's comments before they departed to the sea.

And then he heard the distinctive accent of a giant tortoise in a mask, and he followed that sound to his destination.

"Way to leave me alone, guys," he muttered on the approach... failing to account for Jack whatsoever.

If he noticed Sonic standing there at all, he didn't show it. However, he did turn to Tails: "Heeey, fox-dude! Haven't seen you since the desert went boom!"
Truly, Mako was a wizard with words and unendingly perceptive.

As the post-bow silence was broken and the room began to fill up with familiar faces, Tails perked up again.

"Hey, hey guys!" the fox greeted the new arrivals in cheerful surprise, "what are you doing here?! Are you all OK?"

"We're holding up, to say the least," answered Sheffer, sounding a bit more... cheerful for once.

"I... uh... managed to get out of the blast radius before the emerald decided to go nuclear..." he added reluctantly. "But, we're alive, at least. Of course, we nearly drowned the other day, but I guess that's besides the point, even though I learned its nice to have a pair of gills around." He threw a complimentary nod to Mako.

"Anyway, what are you..." He glanced to the blue hedgehog in their presence. "...and Mr. Speed Shoes doing here? Can't guess it's for the sushi."
