Paxton had thought it good to keep his weapon in hand as they ventured through the moody blue tunnels. However, his very serious approach to the whole ordeal made it soon apparent that it was putting him on-edge, as every sudden eruption of fire that was a little too close to the group was met with the dog pointing his gun at it like an enemy, looking ready to blow holes in the pipe. And each time, he'd sheepishly lower his arms and look embarrassed at his overreaction.

Now, he peered over the chasm while sitting on one knee, keeping watch over the room. He almost volunteered to go first, but Geoff seemed insistent, and the canine soon reasoned that the hedgehog with the crystal armor, as he had observed, would be the most likely to survive any incidents that occurred. So Pax replied with a simple but concerned "Be careful," and kept his eyes open, looking a little too intense for the slow-paced situation. His eyes swept back and forth across the room, looking for anything that would threaten those crossing the pipe. Every so often, he'd glance upwards towards the ceiling and try to pierce the shadows above with a look of unease on his face. This room gave him the willies. In fact, the whole place was beginning to creep him out. It just made him all the more eager to get what they came for and leave.

Geoff made it to the other side without any hindrance.

The clunking, hissing, chuffing noises permeated the room emptily. If one stood there and listened to it, with the way it echoed so endlessly, it'd be very similar to a clock in an empty room, growing in the imagination, becoming louder until maddening. It felt stressful just to be there.

Fenn also made it across safely. No threat yet.

A louder thud and clank came from nearby, somewhere overhead, but there were no apparent affects. Was the place just playing with their heads?

Ivan was kind enough to let his gun-weilding teammates take the opposition down, light as it was. Besides, jumping out there while Casey was unloading was less than smart. Once it was clear, he continued on with the group until they came to the balance beam of a pipeline

Single file sounded like a good idea, and after Fenn had made his way across, Ivan figured it was his turn. He made his way steadily across the pipe, going the careful route, similar to his cohorts.

The ground below was an ugly thing to look at with its patches of stone, spikes, and mechanical and electronic junk, but hard to see from all the way up there. Maybe someone would get a closer look.

Ivan was about one quarter of the way across when a segment of the pipe rotated behind him, followed by other segments in a sort of staggered acceleration, until, within a second or so, the part right under his own feet spun too. The worst part of it? The entire underside of the pipe, which they couldn't see prior, had huge, spiked balls attached to it, all linked to one another by chain. As the pipe's segments spun, they began to seemingly spiral around it, creating both a falling and stabbing-smashing hazard.

Incredibly loosely inspired by this ancient hazard from Lava Reef Zone Act 2. SPIKEBALL PIPE THING. Again, loosely is the word; I have greatly exaggerated upon the whole thing here in scale and function, but I thought this might help everyone understand the concept of spiraling spiked balls on a spinning pipe.

As he carefully made his way across, Ivan couldn't help but look back as his bridge suddenly started to shift. And the segments of the pipe started to gradually rotate, one segment slightly behind the one before it. It honestly took a moment for the rabbit to really process the urgency of the situation.

"Yer kiddin'..." He grumbled and started to quicken his pace, but the footing was bad enough without the bad luck of it beginning to move. Finally, the rotation caught up to him, and he slipped, falling right off the pipe, and into the pit. Thanfully, it wasn't spikes that waited directly below him. But, a ...ring monitor. He landed flat on his back, crushing it under his weight, and rings rolled out of the broken monitor.

Jackpot or no, it was not a pleasant feeling, falling on what was essentially a CRT, and breaking it. He groaned, grabbing one of the rings without even getting up, "I be fine!" He shouted distantly up at the group above before getting up to collect his bounty.

Seeing something bad happening but being unable to do anything to stop it was not a good feeling. The wary GUN agent could only sit there and hope that Ivan could take care of himself--and suddenly seeing the hare fall off the side into the deep pit made Pax's eyes go wide with fear. Peering over the side and seeing a mostly-unharmed and not-horribly-impaled Ivan was a great relief, but his heart refused to slow down from the sudden panic.

The canine shifted his attention to the pipe, or whatever it was. He couldn't come up with a technical title for a large spinning metal cylinder with a dozen spiked balls attached to it. The most he could come up with was 'insane pointless deathtrap.' Nonetheless, it was there, and they would have to get past it.

"Anyone got any ideas...?"

Been NPCin' so much I ain't playin' my own character. I'll skip the pointless catch-up-reaction song and dance.

Casey furrowed his brows at the mess. He had initially looked very... concerned, to put it lightly, about Ivan's fate, and had dropped to the edge of the chasm, gripping it tightly as he watched. Needless to say, it was a relief that the rabbit was well, but it didn't mean they'd have much of an easier time getting across.

"Hmmn."

He stood, faced the obstacle directly, and stared at it intently, watching the spikes swirl. His eyes darted, taking it all in, then narrowed with determination. He inhaled sharply, then... he took off. As soon as the first spiked ball cleared the top of the cylinder, he ran, crabbed at an angle so as to account for the rotation, and proceeded to swing and flail his arms for balance and huff and puff and sprint with quick, clomping steps of his stubby little legs all the way across.

He skidded and stumbled to a stop, wheeling about excitedly to face the way he'd come from, and stooped, eyes wide, a grin on his face, chest heaving, hunkered with his elbows on his knees.

Casey cupped a hand and yelled back. "If I can do it, any'a y'all can do it!"

"I believe in youuu!"

Hands up defensively, the ferret looked over at the canine as he asked the question of the day. "Yeah... we could-" He stopped as Casey took the initiative to make a dash across the chasm's bridge of death, "do what he did."

The agent's tactic to aim at any moving object put Desmond in a unnerved state as he waited for the dog to follow suit and run across. Maybe he would squeal at the closest spike ball and fall over like the rabbit had prior, but not be as fortunate. "Hey Pax," he called, "you sure you can do this, I think you can ask that MadGear guy for something maybe." A bit too concerned for him, Desmond took off across the turntable bridge, taking a lunge at the ending to avoid a spike ball that was getting too close for comfort.

"Alright, next!"

Avatar stared after the others as they made the mad dash across the the spinning, spiked pipe. Dashing across a spinning pipe seemed like suiside - though her idea of jumping across it may not pan out the way the visualized it in her mind. She wasn't too sure she could make the whole way.

The piranha shuddered at the image that came to her mind.

"Okay, here goes." Shaking horrible picture out of her head, the fish backed up slightly, then dashed toward the pipe and onto it. She felt the rotation of the platform. This could end badly. Could. She neared the middle of the pipe; her balance was faultering and the spikes were getting a little too close.

Not now-! Avatar bent down quickly and sprang towards solid ground - praying that her jumping abilities wouldn't fail her now.

We have touchdown. Thank god. A soon as the Avatar's feet touched solid ground a wave of relief swept over her.

"That wasn't too hard." She said nonchalantly, brushing off her shorts.

Desmond hadn't gotten a reply from the dog before he had left; merely uncomfortable silence.

Now Pax was alone on that side of the chasm, with no way to put off traversing the the Murder Pipe any longer. He bit his lower lip and watched the spike balls spin around and around. Knowing that he would have to run across while dodging the things gave him a cold chill in his gut. Maneuvering Eggman-designed deathtraps was not an area he was familiar with. But there was a whole group of people waiting for him on the other side, and there was no way he could just turn back and let them handle things without him.

He finally stopped staring at the rotating spikes, feeling sure that he'd finally gotten the speed and timing down. It was just a matter of maintaining balance. Taking a heavy and anxious breath, Paxton waited for the first spiked ball to pass, and took the first step onto the pipe and started running. Rubber-soled army boots gave him good traction on the slick metal surface, but compensating for the pipe's rotation was tricky. Pax stumbled just once, but it slowed him down enough to make the incoming spikes approaching his side a much more significant problem. Seeing them swinging at him far too close for comfort sent Paxton into a panicked scramble to speed up. At the very end, a random and fleeting suggestion that he wouldn't make it was all it took to make the dog leap off the side of the pipe towards non-spinning non-spiky ground.

The canine hit the ledge, hands digging into the ground as hard as they could while he dangled over the edge. Still in the middle of his freak-out, Pax wasted no time in throwing himself up and over, flopping onto the ground and rolling away from the edge. Panting, he slowly got to his feet. "Well, that wasn't so hard," he said with an obviously forced smile as he dusted off his clothes. "So with that out of the way let's get moving because this place isn't that safe and I'd like to get out of here quick as we can."

Fenn had been watching the remainder take their turns crossing the pipe, which, at some point, decided it wanted to be more dangerous and added rotating spike balls to the mix. He had to catch himself from diving out into the chasm when they lost sight of their pirate friend, who unfortunately couldn't quite make the trek once the rotation of the pipe was underway. However, his concern was put (relatively) at ease once he heard the hare's voice from below, indicating that all was well - given the sound of rings spilling out, the panda assumed that there was no need for worry anyway. Pirates like their loot.

In the meantime, he turned his attention to those who still had to make tracks to the other side. Admittedly, watching Casey perform his dash and succeed without much of an issue was a bit funny, but comforting all the same. Feeling a little better about the whole thing, he stuffed his ropes back into their proper place, and simply waited for the others to arrive.

Poor Pax, though. As soon as he arrived, Fenn was right there next to him, wiping at the canine's brow with an unused oil rag. Sure that he was probably sweating bullets after the event, it was all he could really do to help out. He also gave Pax a hearty pat on the back to aid in his attempts to comfort his comrade. "Yeah, let's get goin' - but, hey, don't sweat it, you did all right there! You're in one piece. C'mon, ease up, we're that much closer to th' goal at hand."

For Casey, there was a great deal of wincing and agony with each of the others' crossing even though he had professed his alleged faith in them. It was an ugly mess! But, they needed to be able to shrug off obstacles like that. The big heroes did it all the time, without batting an eye, after all. This was just one of many rites of passage, he assured himself.

Once it was all said and done, he peered over the threshold of the drop again.

"Hey, Ivan!" he shouted. "Let's get you... back... up...?"

The rabbit was nowhere to be seen. The rings in the area were also nowhere to be seen. It would seem that the adventurous pirate had taken it upon himself to find his own way back to the group, probably while following trails of money.

"Heh. Guess he'll catch up." He turned back to the others. "You heard the man! Let's keep movin'! That big, fat, ancient gemstone doohickey ain't gonna snatch itself!"

And so he hustled down the corridor, wasting no time.

"Hrrrrrugh!"

The sound reverberated off the stone walls as Casey and co. continued through the cavern corridor. Remember that guardian that was mentioned in passing a couple days ago? Well, the ceiling broke away several feet in front of Casey, dropping the fiery echidna in his path. Upon landing, he immediately lunged at Casey, throwing a powerful jab at his gut region. He always was a punch-now-ask-questions-later kinda guy, after all.

Of course if he managed to land the blow, the threats would soon follow, "Get lost!"

"WHURGH."

That one vocalization probably explained it all. If there was any question, though, one could see at a glance that Knuckles' fist had plunged into Casey's ample gut, which fully absorbed the shock of the blow. This was not a good thing; the boar just plain fell over, eyes bugging, wind utterly knocked out of him.

At least it was above the belt this time.

Geoff had gladly followed Casey down the next cavern, having the simple need to keep moving. He'd been fortunate with the crossing of the pipe, but seeing how machinery had joined the natural hazards, he didn't wish to see what other tricks and traps would pop up. Of course, that worry was answered in a suddenly absent piece of ceiling and jabbing knuckles, the hedgehog instinctively hopping back, crystal at ready on his arms. He was literally on his toes as he eyed the echidma, giving only a brief second to flinch at their leading boar's poor reaction time before returning to his light, defensive stance.

That was when he realized who they were actually dealing with; this was the guardian, and thanks to the stories, he knew a pathetic layer of rock wasn't going to do much to stop him. This would probably require a different approach.

"Whoawhoawhoa, hold up just a sec!" he managed to get out in the time Knuckles possibly could have turned to him. "We're not lookin' for trouble, and sure as hell not here to start it!"
