It pains me to say this, but we're done. Thank you to those who have participated and followed along these many years. We had a lot of fun, and your contributions will be remembered for a long time to come.

Strangers and visitors of the future, please respect what is ours. If there is anything in the form of writing or rules you'd like to borrow for your own RP, please e-mail me on the gmail account "onsoku" for permission. Chances are I'll grant it if you are a nice, intelligent person, and agree to just a few small stipulations regarding proper crediting method. But please, leave our characters alone. All fan-made, original, non-SEGA characters, character art, and concepts remain property of their respective creators. I hope that some of us will be able to move on and have some more fun writing hobbies in the future. No matter what, we'll stay in touch, and this group will live on, even if it has nothing to do with RP.

I love you guys. God bless.

It was a far better day for traveling and being out in the snowy wilderness than the day before. For starters, their journey began by departing peacefully from a hospitable hostel in a quaint village rather than by crashing in from outer space in a bugged-out dropship. Secondly, the weather was decent; the wind was low, the sun was bright (maybe a little too bright—the snow was actually glaring white), and, moving downhill, while tiring in its own treacherous and rocky way, was a lot easier and faster than the alternative.

It was only mid-day by the time they reached more level terrain and found the train station, which basically amounted to a sheltered train platform mashed up against a colorful house-like building in the middle of a simple village. Signs of modernization were patchy, but present; the tiny town was rich with traditional elements, just like the place the travelers had left in their wake, but also had automobiles parked here and there, including couple track-driven snowcats.

The travelers seemed to be right on time. A train whistle hazily tooted across great distance, reverberating off the mountainous terrain. Their ride, an old diesel train pulling both freight and passenger cars, was pulling in soon.

Casey, their big, hoggish guide (or at least a stand-in for a guide, in lieu of anyone they could actually pay), trundled slowly along the train platform along with his overburdened porter. Funny and even seemingly impolite as it was, the burly pig carried next to nothing, while svelte little loris Latika had the equivalent of a military outpost stacked on her back.

"This is as far as I'll be goin' by foot," Casey turned on a heel and announced to the others, hands planted on his sides. Or, rather, hand and gun. (Wince-inducingly, he was poking the barrel of his gunarm straight into his own side, seemingly unaware.) "Any chance by now you've all figured out what you're gonna do?"

Since it's hard to convey completely foreign-looking things, let's yank a random picture and say, "This, except lightly snowy."

Anyway, this thread may have a slightly slow start, but I believe it's necessary to make the story flow right. After that, though, we've got some things planned. I think. Don't we? Let's say we do.

With a well rested body and mind, Geoff really had no trouble during the trek other than the slight aches from their endeavors from the last few days. The cool air was surprisingly refreshing, the sights were expansive, and — dare he even think it — it almost felt peaceful. Despite the constant squinting due to the reflecting snow, the hedgehog was actually quite content with the journey. For the first time in what felt like a long while, there were no robots bearing down on him, no pretentious kids wrecking havoc, and no world government to conquer. A hike in the mountains was, in fact, the most relaxing thing he'd done in weeks.

When they reached the station, he took note of the signs of more modern machinery than had been seen back at the village. This only served to show that it wouldn't be much longer before they returned to areas more in tune with the present day aspects of most of the world, something obviously absent in this mountainous terrain.

With the distant whistle of the train reassuring Geoff, he turned to Casey, the coat that had been lent to him shifting a bit.

"'Dunno exactly," he replied, only briefly glancing to the precarious positioning of the hog's weaponized limb. "Get back to the U.F., I guess? If it's even being called that again." A brief puff of a sigh escaped him as he glanced in the direction of the tracks. "Hopefully we can scrounge up some money... though, I got to admit, this place is pretty nice."

A bit on edge for a bit of the traverse downhill, a sense of calm in the area began giving him a sense of assurance that maybe the days of robots attacking people and pointless violence would stop, or maybe settle down a bit. Looking up at the sky a few times during the trip, Desmond wondered if the simians from before would ever attack them, giving him another feeling of uneasiness to ride upon. Taking a hint that even if he wanted to do something he probably couldn't, the ferret gave up thinking about it for the moment, muttering something to himself as he looked onto the scenery.

Finally reaching the station, He examined the buildings of this seemingly more modern town they were passing through while pondering on the change of architecture. Glancing at random shadows with a little anxiety he began to silently swear until he heard the boar's comment.

"Well that's your case" he replied to the hedgehogs plan, "but I want to head for Empire City, and if I got to hitch a ride without money, so be it." Looking over at Casey he motioned to his gun-arm "Do lots of other guys have those things?"

Latika, who looked about as burdened by her load as she would by a butterfly on her head, peered at the ferret over the top of the book her nose was stuck in.

"Empire City in United Federation," she stated dryly, sounding dangerously at risk of another attempt at sass. Instead, she quite unabashedly stared in pointed silence, until at last, the crisp turn of a page hailed the end of her scrutinizing gaze, and she returned to her reading with a quiet sniff.

"F,Y,I."

Casey nodded quietly along with Geoff's contemplation, but looked at Desmond ... strangely. Latika had voiced his thoughts to a certain extent (regarding geography), but things had gotten all the more odd when Desmond suddenly shifted gears and made small-talk about Casey's gun arm right when it seemed they were moments from parting going their own separate ways. The hog only twisted up his mouth, furrowed his brows, and looked utterly perplexed as he shifted his attention to Geoff again without answering Desmond.

"I think some'a your party's injuries are a lil' worse than we thought," he observed aloud to the hedgehog, then looked worriedly toward the approaching train. "Maybe it'd be best if we found a way to get you on this train, and back to civilization, and... hospitals..."

Looking over towards the Loris he questioned what she was talking about with a wayward frown and perplexed look on his his face. "That's what I just sai-" catching the "but" he immediately face palmed and sighed, "Never mind, I'll shut up now."

A hospital sounded nice though, the thought made him wiggle his recently repaired leg a bit and with a little self-centeredness believe the party was fine. Looking over at Ember though, he reconsidered his accusation. "You feeling okay with the..." he pointed at his nose to fixate the spot on her face, "...thing there?" Not only that but she also was injured before somewhere he didn't quite remember...

wait...stomach...right.

Fixed error and added a bit more if it's alright

Being reminded of her still sore beak make Ember scowl. It wasn't the pain that bothered her, but instead the scar that she knew would permanently be affixed. So much for being proud of her beak. Shaking if off, she waved a hand dismissively.

"Tch, yeah. Just a bit of a scratch really. Besides, scars add character. Or whatever those people say. Besides, it matches the burn marks ha."

Changing the subject, she thought about how exactly to get on the train as it pulled closer. There was not even a single coin in her pockets to pay her way. Nothing to pawn off either. Ember herself had never 'rode the rails' before but if others could do it she would. Shoving her hands in her pockets, she surveyed the rag-tag group. Unless someone whipped out a wallet full of green she wouldn't be the only one sneaking aboard a cargo hold. Glancing, she made sure no workers were hovering around. Finding it clear, she spoke.

"So!" she chirped out merrily, "Anyone else up for cramming into a dark dusty place full of who-knows-what?"

Geoff's glance to Desmond only a moment prior would be awfully similar to that of the boar that stood in front of him, but whatever matter of thoughts that were running through his head were quickly dismissed by Ember's proclamation. His face flinched into an expression that obviously showed he wasn't all too giddy about that approach.

"Maybe we should find a different way than that," he said in quick consideration. "Even if it does come down to it eventually."

The 'hog faced the... uh, hog again.

"Ya know if these people are sympathetic enough to assist some weary and wounded 'space adventurers'?" he asked with a nod to the station.

It became very noisy as the train started pulling into station. Casey had to lean toward the hedgehog and speak in a high voice just to be heard.

"No," he answered blatantly, "probably not! Everybody needs money these days since the takeover."

Fortunately, considering the next thing he said, there wasn't much risk of being overheard outside the party with all those squeaking brakes and wheels, and the rumbling diesel engine.

"Easier to ask forgiveness than permission! If ya ask for a handout they'll be watchin' for you, so just wait just outside'a station 'til the train starts movin', jog alongside, and hop on a freight car before it gets too fast!" The noise stopped, and his voice lowered accordingly. "Y'look like spry kids, anyway. Shouldn't be hard."

And with that, and a little wave (and too-wide, knowing grin), he approached to board, motioning for Latika to bring his stuff.

Geoff silently watched the boar go along on his own way, his eyes soon glancing between the train and the station. A hasty debate rolled through his head, but really, the options weren't many.

Without a word, he set off at a brisk pace, not necessarily following Casey's path, but seeming to be heading toward a spot at the side of the station, drawing nearer to the tracks.

Ace seemed to follow Geoff's philosophy down the walk there. As quiet as he was during the walk, he seemed to find some semblance of peace hiking down on these snowy hills. His hands were kept in his pockets rather than crossed over his chest, so that was probably a good sign as well. And was that a hint of a grin on his face as he set down the path that Casey and the hedgehog had already set? "Who knows," he mused idly to himself, but probably not loudly enough to be heard over the din of the engine. "Could be fun."

Mako had, possibly predictably, trailed a bit behind, though with refreshingly little complaint. He remained silent throughout the exchange going on around him, orange eyes flicking between the speakers in turn.

"We're going to hop a train."
Pause.

"We're going... to hop a train."

It seemed to have taken a moment or two for the idea to set in, and then he sighed deeply. "Better than the alternative," he reasoned, yet his mind was rapidly cycling through the myriad of ways this could go wrong for him.

Big was busy brushing snow off of his person throughout, as he had tripped on the predominantly-downhill trek, and had, rotund and he was, kind of... rolled a short way. He took it completely in stride, as he tended to do with much of everything.
He beamed around at his rag-tag, makeshift teammates.

"Either this or walking," mentioned Geoff as he heard Mako, showing a ghost of a grin as he glanced to the shark out of the corner of his eye. Awful fast change of perspective there, compared to his previous distaste in the idea.

But then the hedgehog's attention was directed elsewhere, eyes falling on Ace. A contemplating sort of look flickered on his face before he spoke over the idling train again.

"You holdin' up all right?" he asked the serval with subtle concern. "Don't think many be walkin' around after gettin' impaled."

Considering it was likely the last time the loris would ever see any of the strange space farers again, she was markedly quiet, even disinterested in them as plans were discussed, and the pair and the group went their distinct, but not entirely separate ways. It could be noted, however, that the book was stowed and out of Latika's face almost as soon as the travelers took their leave.

As fond as she had seemed of the hog, however, it was notable that, while she did she dutifully carry his numerous parcels, bundles, trunk, duffels, and bags all the way to the boarding platform without complaint, if Casey took his eyes off of the girl for even an eye's blink, he'd look back to find her gone, without anything in the way of thanks or goodbyes.

The train's cars looked old, to put it bluntly. It wasn't for a lack of maintenance — save for some bad paint and a little graffiti, they looked alright. They were just not very modern in design. The cars were mixed and mismatched, with a couple looking like some sort of old military sleeper cars, while the others looked like quaint, classic passenger cars with lines of windows.

One in particular stood out, though, and not because of its design, age, or condition, but because of who was tending to it. Near the rear of the train, one of the freight cars had no less than five guys loitering around it, all wearing suspiciously long and baggy coats as if to conceal something, and wearing scarves across their faces, as if to conceal themselves. When the time came to board, they went inside that freight car rather than going to any of the designated passenger cars, and none of the railroad crew gave them any trouble for it.

The car Casey found himself directed to once he showed his ticket was closer to the front, much farther from that shady crew, hooked up to a baggage car. Latika had been directed to dump his stuff in there; Casey had gone to thank her for her help, but was naturally left scratching his head and looking around in circles by her unexpected absence. Eventually, he was ushered to get back where he belonged, so, with just a slightly remorseful shrug, he did.

***

A few minutes in station was all it took before the train was loaded, boarded, and ready to chug along its lonely way again. It was an easy, but curvy ride through the mountains, rolling down a steady, gradual grade, with just the occasional short climb. The rails were almost serpentine in the way they moved with the land and along great trestles, seeming to only truly straighten for the occasional bridge and short tunnel across ravines and through particularly impassable ridges.

The red-jacketed boar shivered once in his seat. The passenger car was poorly heated, so he searched for a scarf in his satchel, but found none. Determined not to freeze, and perhaps curious about his acquaintances' success, he stood, shuffled to the door of his private compartment, and, with effort, wedged his way through the narrow opening and into the equally narrow windowed corridor, and started rearward toward the back door.

An unfortunate passerby, a mouse-like man, had been approaching but stopped dead in his tracks, blocked utterly by the hog.

"..."

They stared at each other a second. Casey's bulbous torso was literally touching both sides of the passage even though he was already crabbing sideways.

"Yeah, sorry pal, you're gonna have to be the one to take the loss here," he said with questionable regret, and continued moving forward, forcing the poor little guy to just backtrack all the way to his own compartment.

Eventually, Casey got to the back door and opened it. Cold air blasted in and almost instantly frosted his eyebrows.

"HnnNnNngh?"

Teeth bared, and bottom eyelids pulling up in discomfort, the big guy hastily stepped out, closed the door behind him, traversed the narrow and hazardous gap between cars, and opened the door to the baggage car to peer inside. And, by peer inside, this means jump in and slam the door behind him then look around inside.

His eyes adjusted slowly.

...

"Hello?!" he whisper-shouted. (This was probably unnecessary, being that there was enough clickety-clacking train noise to mask a violent murder aboard the thing.)

I'm assuming the end of this post is well after everyone got on board, and... just kinda assuming that everybody successfully train-hopped and stowed away. Hope you're all okay with skipping that bit. Anyone who wants to write what happened with their characters still can, though! You just don't have to.
