Jack squinted against the light shined down on her, drifting towards the large canister that contained some sort of bird. But for all she saw it could have been a hippogriff or a platypus. But the masked figure in the control booth was kind enough to straighten it out for her.

"Phoenix, eh?" She said tapping the toes of her boots on the canister, kicking the snow off them onto what she assumed to be a very important for the kidnappers.

"Well, That all depends on ya, you wanna surrender now, and come along all nice and quiet?" She asked, not expecting much, but she did have to offer.

"And here I thought a phoenix-thingie was decent looking. Instead of a cheap costume." quipped Ember. Casually leaning against one of the smaller containers, she put on an air of nonchalant. Let the big baddie make the move first afterall. Or, at least she tried not to show the nervousness she had inside her gut.

Truly, there was one thing the notoriously hyperdramatic Power Mask hated more than a missed opportunity to (rather obvious) evildoers to villains about the error and ultimate futility of their ways. But he also knew the importance of practicality in dire moments. He wasted no time grunting in acknowledgement of Jack's orders, huffing in the direction of the bird-beaked baddie above, and stomping his way back to the door that separated them from Dureau. (Really, he was going to anyway.)

"Ah-ah-ahhh," chided the bulbous, cloaked figure behind the shutters and reinforced glass, waggling his white-gloved finger. "You're in no position to be impudent! I think it's time you relax a bit. Assistant!"

There was a series of loud clicks. Incandescent backup lights illuminated a catwalk high above the group, where, next to a thick pipeline attached to various pressurized tanks, tubes, and yet more pipes, there stood another bird-mask-wearing figure. Previously unnoticed because of the poor lighting, he was now clearly visible: Below the mask, he was solid white, and wore a red cape, brown gloves, brown boots, and a familiar shield on his back. He gazed down on the group for just a couple seconds, then turned around.

Squeak. Squeak. Squeak. The noise continued several turns, then was followed by a loud hiss. He was turning a large, round, red-painted wheel valve. Gas as thick as pea soup began to pour into the room from the openings above. Jack and Ember would find its appearance and drowsying effects most familiar.

Simultaneously, metal crates all around the room began to open, then collapse into a flat, unfurled form to reveal strange robots. They were rather large, almost a little egg-shaped in the body, and had powerful-looking, earth-mover-thickness arms and legs. Their paint schemes seemed unfinished; they were largely comprised of bare metal, dark-colored panels of composite materials, and even some sections of bare electronics and wiring. Whatever they were, they were not yet fully manufactured, but apparently complete enough to fight.

Tank would find one of these 15-foot monsters ready to grab and hurl him away from his intended mission at the entrance.

Jacks eyes narrowed at the masked Baron as he did something, it took a moment to realize what it was, but as soon as it dawned on her she took to the air and dove towards the baron, taking a short-cut though an uncovered panel in a robot, poping back out the other side with a bundle of wires which she hoped would be detramental to the robots genral health.

"Get clear! That gas'll knock you out!" She called to the others, it wasn't hard to recagnize what they where doing. She hated to do it but Jack threw the wires at the ermine then followed with a hook. Robots or not, this fight was already lost if they couldn't get rid of the gas.

It was hard to tell if Jack's attempt at ripping wires had done a whole lot. The conduits that were especially crucial were too thick to be ripped by hand, so, while the machine did take a couple funny missteps, and its right arm had some twitchy spasms, it remained apparently functional for the most part.

Meanwhile, the gas was thickest at the top of the room, where Jack had to fly to attack the ermine. Even through the poor visibility, the swordsman drew his blade and sliced the bundle of wires easily, almost effortlessly, while hefting his shield with his other hand to give her fist nothing but a hard, nigh-impervious surface to impact. It was clear that ousting him from his position would make for a good fight.

In short, the confrontation wasn't starting well. Hulking robots were already lurching with surprising speed after her friends, with at least two going after Ember and trying to snatch her up in their huge, metal hands, and if they kept breathing in the mysterious gas, they'd have but maybe a precious 30 seconds of usable motor skill and coordination remaining, and maybe a minute of full consciousness. The room was a lot larger than the small, confined space they'd suffered their first gas-attack in, so it took longer to permeate the air. That was the only concession in their favor at that moment, though.

((OOC: Sorry for the bad post, will make up for it))

The sight of the gas spilling out from the pipes sent panic triggers through the bird's brain. She saw what she hoped wasn't the Baron but saw Jack on her way to deal with that. She also saw two of the machines bearing down on her. That was more important.

Taking a deep breath of the soon-to-be drugged air, she quickly dove out of the machine's path. She misjudged the speed and lost a tail feather for it. The thicker gas above would be foolish to fly in and Tank was having enough trouble of his own. This was the last time she ever took an offer for a 'free vacation'.

Getting a chance, she attached herself to one of the robots. Spying an opening in the exterior she jammed her hand in and starting tearing out whatever wires she could. There wasn't a chance she would win against these two empty-handed. But, she wanted to at least do some kind of damage.

Already she felt the air in her lungs running out but didn't dare take a breath.

The robot struggled to reach Ember to get it off of itself, but like a backhoe try to tie shoelaces, did not have the dexterity. A second of the hulking robots approached to assist; its idea of assisting was firing punches at the other robot, in hopes of smashing Ember. Its first couple missed, dealing significant damage to its comrade.

And then, Ember's tinkering had an unexpected effect, as suddenly both of her robot's arms went wild and started sparking and flailing. The would-be-helper robot got decked straight in the face and was sent staggering backward, windmilling its own arms as it smashed directly into the gigantic egg-pod Jack had seen the bird in.

The pod cracked and sparked, and its glow faded. No other results for the moment, though.

Jack immediately regretted her hasty attack, she'd tried to stop herself when she saw the ermine raise his shield but she was too commuted to the attack to stop by then and she punched the unyielding metal. With a cry of pain she fluttered back holding her fist. Jack had lost the breath she'd held when she yelped in pain, and now felt the burning sting of the thick gas. Jack reached onto her belt, which, actually wasn't her belt at all, she just put her holster on it. To be honest she'd taken the deers belt, as Jack didn't have a better place to keep her captives stuff then on her. Clipped on the back was the gas mask she'd captured the archer wearing, and without any other options she put it on to at least keep herself upright long enough to see that this job was finished.

Jack had never worn a gas mask before, and quickly learned it was like putting your head into a fish bowl then wearing goggles on the outside just to make seeing a bit harder. She barley had it on before she had to weave around another robot, and then dove back towards the weasel.

Jack drew her weapon, hovering not far away pointing it at what she was quite sure to be the baron. Why can't she meet a nice guy she wont have to shoot at later?

"What? A gas mask, really?" blurted the grungy PA voice of the so-called "phoenix" with some irritation. "Stop wasting time!"

Meanwhile, the red-caped figure flourished his sword in a quick maneuver that seemed to stow it in behind his shield, in his-shield-holding hand, as he crouched on the catwalk behind said sturdy cover, then suddenly stood once more with an uncannily accurate spray of throwing knives—four in all, all hurled from a single hand—directly at Jack.

Somewhere down below, nearer to Ember, the very large capsule her robot assailant had accidentally broken began to make strange noises, flicker as if with fire, and emit smoke (not that the latter was terribly apparent, as hazy as the room was already becoming).

For likely the first time in his adult life, it was probably the first time that Tank was caught off guard by a giant robot. Or at least enough so that five seconds after it appeared, the tortoise was seen skidding along the ground a few yards in front Ember; A surely demoralizing sight for an already grim-looking situation.

It wasn't long after that that the thick stink of gas invaded his nostrils, and with a quick announcement of "Gas!" his efforts were redoubled. Unlike Jack, he didn't lay claim to a gas mask (although he should've by now for all the times he needed one,) but what he did have was large lungs. So leaning close to the ground, a long, long deep breath did he draw before he picked himself up and prepare for round 2. Even low to the floor as he was, the dull sting of the gas made its mark, blurring his vision and stumbling his steps up, but the herculean vigor of Power Mask was not so easily stifled.

He didn't really sprint at the robot that threw him as much as he did trudge with great intensity, but he still picked up enough speed to properly apply to his jump. The mass of muscle and shell hurled himself at the mechanical monster's chest legs first, but torquing his waist mid-leap for a mighty spinning dropkick that might've had a name attached to it (most likely 'Power Screwdriver') did the tortoise not know better than to waste valuable breath.

Jack could do little more then gasp before she stopped flapping and started a graceless plummet in an attempt to avoid the knives. Not being impaled is nice, but she didn't get away unscathed. Along with a few feathers and a bit of hair Jack had a nice shallow cut across the side of her head where one of the blades just grazed her. She fell awkwardly while struggling to gain some control of her fall given she needed a few of those lost feathers.

Jack managed an awkward flutter towards the catwalk, which she grabbed with on hand when she reached. she flipped herself onto the walk, her free hand held her gun.

"Sorry." She said, though it might of been incomprehensible under the mask. Jack fired twice. Each shot hitting the catwalk railings, and would ricochet back down towards his extremities. Namely she aimed for his wounded leg, Since her ricochet weren't deadly she'd have to use the barons own wounds against him. After which Jack had to move fast and closed the distance between them. Any flinching on his part would give her the opportunity to knock his shield aside with one arm, and swing her other around for a hard hook for the caped man's masked jaw.

While Tank bowled over a huge robot down below, Jack's opposition raised his shield as she raised her gun, but did not anticipate her unconventional angle of attack. A ricochet? In the middle of a fight? It must not have even occurred to him that anyone would try such a thing, much less that it would work. Yet, there it happened: one of the two shots flew true, and his already-injured leg was struck (not in the precise spot it was before, but in another, creating yet another wound). With a painful-sounding yell, he fell sideways onto his hip, struggling to grasp at the handrail to stay partially upright, only to get socked square in the face.

The blow dazed him; he reeled loosely to the side, fell face-first onto the catwalk, and accidentally rolled under the railing. As he reached to grab hold, his shield tumbled loose and fell to the ground far below, leaving him hanging defenseless by his hands.

The shimmering, bloated-looking cloaked figure behind the armored window across the chamber had been standing there the whole time, watching, occasionally pressing white-gloved hands to the glass as he leaned close against the glass to watch the action unfold almost as if amused, excited, or anxious. Maybe it was all of the above. Then, something started beeping madly on one of his consoles (the noise audible over the PA), and he wheeled around to check, then darted back to the glass again just as quickly.

"Deverell! Containment has broken! It's capsule #1! You know what this means! Stop hanging around like a ninny and do your job or it's all over!"

Deverell.

Fact check: Jack had shot one of the masked abductors in the leg at the butcher shop on day 2. Deverell went to see the doctor the next day, and avoided the group all day. Dureau was in good health as recently as the evening in the tower with Jack on day 3, with no wounds. When the abductors showed up at the castle to allegedly kidnap Deverell later that night (the early morning hours of day 4), there was only one shot heard fired, yet "Dureau" was shot in the leg, and there was a bullet hole in the ceiling. And the sword-throwing and knife-throwing? They had already seen how ineffectively Dureau handled a blade on the morning of day 2, when Deverell soundly dispatched him in their spar, and day 3, when he was no match for even the loopy Sir Corin.

The ermine they saw in one of the pods below just a minute ago could not have been Deverell. The ermine hanging from the catwalk right then was absolutely not Dureau.

The lack of fresh air was starting to effect Ember's already simple thinking. Proud of herself for at least not dying quite yet, she clung to the robot hoping to at least make it out alive. The sparking damage to the large capsule drew her attention. Where there was smoke there was fire. Fire meant something good was happening.

For a moment, she wondered if the gas in the room was flammable. No no, maybe, possibly. Be nice if it was. Wasn't a better way to go then blowing up. Then again, she really didn't want to let Jack and Tank down. Especially Jack really; she owed her too much. And now that fancy pants bird-thing was yelling. And people said she was annoying.

Containment had broken...oh! Maybe she could pull off that same trick again. Or at least do more damage. Pushing herself off the flailing robot, she used the momentum and glided the distance. Making only what could be a crash landing, she steadied herself atop the smoking container. Hopefully, those robots didn't learn the first time. At least she made a good target to make up for her lack of skill.

Removing the last set of cuffs from her belt and Jack leaned over the railing in what looked like an attempt to help the white weasel. Only instead she cuffed the hand he clung to life with to the railing. After which Jack shook her hand, as she turned the valve to stop the flood of gas into the large room. It had taken longer then she had thought to divert the imposter, if she was lucky (which so far she wasn't) one of the two others would still be awake.

Jack dove off the catwalk, leaving Deverell there. It was somewhere between the knives and shooting him that she realized something was wrong. Dureau couldn't fight like that, and if these fools had someway to influence the way people behaved they'd of used it long before now. The rest fell into place for her the longer she had to think about it. Oh and the guy yelling Deverell was a nice give away.

Jack dove towards Ember, it was obvious the birdy wasn't very steady, and while luring the robots was a sound plan, Jack wasn't entirely sure containment breach was really something they wanted. Either way Jack moved to swoop the ruby bird from the container, but the rescue wasn't really looking so great by Jacks drunken flight path. The missing primary flight feathers where defiantly going to be missed until they grew back.
