"Si, gracias," answered the tortoise meekly, but ultimately accepted Ember's helping. Any other day he would quite happily push his own self up! It was just the oil slick... Very clever device, actually. He might have to pester Dr. Henshin for something like that when he got back.
Regardless, he eventually stood himself straight with their combined efforts, lamenting how recently he had his shell waxed. "Hwell," he stated, brushing himself off, "Aye em sorltenly not going back to sleep soon. End aye em sorltenly not geeving those creemanuls any chance to escape."

"He's right," added the baron, confirming Tank's statement as he led the way out. "Snow or not, we have no choice. We pursue tonight. They may be gone by morning."
And with that, if their "prisoner" was well-covered by guns and burly tortoise muscle, he exited the room, sword still in hand. He seemed to step very lightly with his injured leg—just shy of a full-fledged limp. He was hurt, but it seemed he had decided he wasn't going to let it slow him down, given the critical circumstances.
Luc, still in his nightclothes, met them in the hall. It was funny to see him like that—the short-statured, rodent-like fellow that he was, wearing a sleeping cap, holding a candle in one hand, and a much-too-large hunting musket in the other. He was prepared! There were also some other servants behind him, also armed; they might have recognized at least one of them from dinner.
"M'lord, what's going—"
"No time," interrupted Dureau. "They took Deverell. We'll need this one locked up and watched closely."
Luc leered at the captive, and then nodded vigorously, trying his best to look severe and formidable. (It didn't really work.)
"He won't be going anywhere. We'll see to it for sure!"

"Alright, everyone get your coat and shoes on, We'll meet in the courtyard." Jack agreed as she pushed the prisoner towards Luc and the help, she turned to go get her stuff but stopped abruptly and turned slowly glaring at the deer.
"Woah there." She said approach the thief and immediately began to search him. She found lock picks and wire in his gloves and boots, and so much was in his belt she just took that off him. "Now you can take'im."

They soon found themselves traipsing through the frosty wilderness.
It was only lightly snowing, but it was still frigid, biting cold out. Drifts of snow deep enough to lose one's boots in were common. Leaping across (or precariously treading across) frozen streams was necessary, because there were no roads where they were going. That's why they weren't taking a vehicle, and why they were essentially making a fast-paced hike-run across the forested countryside in the middle of the night.
There was still something beautiful about it, though; out there in Cape Norden, with absolutely no light pollution from the city (everything in Mersey was closed by midnight, even the seediest bars), there were so many stars visible that the ink-blue sky looked like a glittering ocean. Still, any awe was probably shunted aside by some mix of other emotions; maybe for some foreboding, and for others, excitement that they were about to finally have their best shot at figuring their mess of a mystery out.
After traversing many a ridge, river, and ravine, and going for what felt miles, the Baron finally led them to the edge of Eirwen's Gorge. Unsurprisingly, it was just what its name said: a gorge. More surprisingly, it was quite deep and large, and nestled into its thickly-forested, tree-filled bottom, was an absolute mess of machinery. It looked like some sort of steel-built, high-tech factory, in complete contrast to everything else in the region. Gigantic pipes plunged into the ground and canyon walls, red LEDs blinked constantly, lights shone from slit-like shuttered windows, and a low, whirring drone thrummed through the gorge. There appeared to be two separate structures: the main "factory"-looking component, and a second, very large structure with what looked like two huge sliding doors on top, marked at their seams by huge strips of yellow and black caution coloring, and surrounded by colored lights not unlike what one would expect to see at a helipad or landing strip.
There were many ways into both complexes, but it was hard to tell at a glance which would be good ones. The rooftop of the factory was covered with large messes of ventilation equipment; the sides of both structures had many corrugated steel roller doors. There were odd chutes and hatches all around, some of which were actually open. At least one or two conveyor belts, currently deactivated, led through open doors directly into the factory.
Dureau, red cape held tight around his body for warmth, remained crouched at the top of the gorge, staring down at the industrialized mass.
"So. This is it."

The golden haired cowgirl crouched next to her bleach colored companion, she held her coat shut and shuddered in the chill. Jack certainly hadn't enjoyed the hike much, and while she'd managed to keep out of creeks and rivers by gliding over them, flying proved too uncomfortable for more then quick bursts. It was just too cold and with the snow she could hardly open her eyes while doing it. She longed to go home to the desert, but at the same time she'd miss the undisturbed beauty of the country side.
Jack whistled softly looking down into the gorge and the complex below.
"They've been here a while, that's fer sure. We should try an avoid those sentries." She said, then pointed to the building with the yellow and black paint job. "I think that structure thar maybe a hanger fer whatever it is they've been flyin' around on. That other one I reckon'll be where we find our missin' people."

Thankful for her wings during the hike, Ember managed to keep up even in the biting cold. After this, she was planning to maybe take a trip somewhere where she never saw her breath. Or at least could feel her feet. Glancing a look down into the gorge, she raised her brows in disbelief.
"Dang", she muttered, "You think someone would found out about this place."
Wishing she had packed a thicker coat, she shoved her hands into her sleeves.
"Question is, how do we get there? Flying wouldn't do very good and there's only two of us with wings."

Behind the others followed the thick crunching of boots in snow from the giant tortoise and his winter-outfit. Perhaps the deadliest foe he would face today would be Glastonia's early morning frost, but he couldn't allow such trivial things to distract him from the mission. Not a single thought of relaxing back home permeated his synapses, and while he was admittedly awestruck by the landscape's lucid charm, on several occasions did he compare the scenery's natural beauty and its bone-chilling cold to a rose and it's vicious, overbearing, bloodthirsty thorns.
Tank answered the birds with a long, visible breath from his nostrils before speaking himself. It was clear the trip alone had taken much out of him.
"Glravitee," he answered simply, with the same ethereal wispishness somebody might say 'Rosebud'.
And with that, he stepped once towards the peak of the gorge, turned to face his companions, and closed his eyes, teetering backwards off the edge like a jumper on a skyscraper. But moments before he hit the snow, his arms, legs, and even ushanka-toting-temple sunk into the warmth of his shell. Sure enough, all five hundred pounds of amphibian muscle went careening down the gorge with a vengeance, with surely nothing to stop him but the end of the hill he slid through.

"Wha-!" she gasped then Tank just dropped over the side like a big turtle torpedo. She turned to the others with a grin.
"He's got the right idea. Lets keep moving." She said, her wings opened and she offered a hand to Dureau. She wasn't sure what sort of climber he was but flying down would certainly be easier on the wounded ermine.
With him or not she'd take to the air and dive down the cliff face after tank, the massive turtle would win the race to the bottom even if they'd started at the same time. Jack landed at the bottom and motioned towards the warehouse, continuing on, sparing a glance towards the whirling drone patrolling the gorge. So far they'd managed to avoid it, but they'd have to keep moving, and quick they wanted to keep it that way.
Jack lead the way towards the deactivated conveyers, they seemed like the easiest entry point, though likely the most dangerous.

More than happy to follow the others lead, Ember swooped down the hillside like a speeding crimson bullet. Holding back a loud 'whoop' she nearly pulled herself up in time to keep from crashing into the snow. Touching down, she wiped the snow from her eyes. That had been fun. More fun than the last few days for sure.
Hoping that it was warmer inside, she followed after Jack.

Dureau had shot Jack an odd look when she took his hand, as if caught off his guard by the offer. He nonetheless went along with it. Maybe it was just the stress of everything that was happening that had him on edge.
"Right..."
It wasn't long before they arrived at the point where sheer drop turned into steep, forested incline. This wasn't a big problem for Jack, Ember, and Dureau. For Tank, however, it may have been a bit challenging to stop his incredible mass. A few trees would surely help him with that task, for better or worse.
No one seemed to notice the ruckus of their arrival, regardless. The short trek through the woods to the building was silent as the grave, with nothing but crunching snow beneath their feet, and whistling wind through the limbs above their heads. Ahead was one of the deactivated conveyors, not turning or doing anything, its door simply hanging open like a big, square mouth agape, spilling white, artificial light into the dark surroundings.
Dureau paused and stared at the opening. It was a hard look on his face, almost like he was glaring back at the light that was glaring at him. He slowly set his hand on the hilt of a sword he'd brought along (a change from usual, but perhaps called for), and turned in a full, creeping circle, examining their surroundings similarly, as if for concern of someone following them, or lurking about.
"Something strange," he murmured to no one in particular, his eyes still darting around the darkness. After a few seconds, though, he shook his head and looked back to the others. "Right behind you," he whispered.
It was actually a lot easier to see inside than out. Should they indeed decide to climb atop the belt and walk inside (taller members would need to crouch a bit, but even Tank could be accommodated), they'd find quite a large room inside—a large, empty room, concrete-floored, metal-walled, with lots of mysterious, factory-like machinery (some of it covered with sheets, for some reason), high catwalks, and even a windowed oversight room of some kind mounted high on one of the walls (probably controls for the machines) but not a soul in sight, and not a sound except for humming fluorescent bulbs.

The massive shell at the bottom of the hill seemed to 'pop' up like toast from a toaster before suddenly sprouting the rest of the limbs it was missing. Tank placed a fist to his brow with a stern frown and clenched eyes, as if to collect himself after the dizzying experience of spinning and sliding down a snowy hilltop. He looked back in search of his teammates, but mostly found the remnants of his drop down; a deep, occasionally wobbly line of indented snow, and about a dozen or so leafless tress toppled like bowling pins alongside it.
Needless to say, he was the first to reach the conveyor belt, but he waited for the others to go crawling in. Regardless, his inner gentlemen (and meat-shield) compelled him to scout ahead, anyway. "Thlrough herle," he said. As he hopped off the belt and on to the concrete floors, he already felt a difference in temperature. And as the others surely followed, he gave the whole room a suspicious look, and a slow, quiet growl of dissatisfaction.
"Stay alart," he cautioned through a stage-whisper. "Somehwon een thees beilding steel rlequires the ceiling laights."

Jack watched Tank crawl in through the hatch at the end of the conveyer, letting him go in first, she paused to look at the baron. He was on edge, and while she remained cautious she hadn't seen anything suspicious.
"Dureau?" She asked as she stepped onto the conveyer belt. She didn't want the group separated, but she wasn't going to force him to come. She turned away and headed up the conveyer after Tank.
She looked around carefully when she came out. A big empty room full of machinery wasn't exactly what she thought she'd find. She approached some of the machines, and started to look at them, examining the devices themselves along with looking for any handy labels or signs. Jack doubted she was lucky enough to find some "evil doomsday machine" label, though it couldn't hurt to look.

Jack found many grey, pod-like containers, exactly the sort Tank had pulled from inside the bell-shaped robot. Some were big, some small, but all had the exact same form. Unlike the one Tank had handled earlier, however, these were still active and lit up, with very small windows on each actually allowing a view into their green-lit interiors.
Each one contained a person. The sickly green painted each curled-up figure's features strangely, but they all appeared to be sleeping peacefully, almost doll-like, unharmed in their little capsules.
There were two capsules that stood out from the rest: one, huge (at least twelve feet tall, maybe more), and covered with a sheet, and another, normally sized, but clutched in the metal talons of a large, UFO-catcher-like crane claw. The contents of the sheeted one were obviously not visible at the moment, as it was covered, and its window was very high; the one with the crane claw resting on it, however, clearly contained a white ermine. He didn't seem to be wearing anything except a pair of brown boots.
Back where they had entered, the door slammed shut. Dureau had not entered behind them.

"Crap." The griffin muttered at the shut door. Distracted by the pods, namely the ominous one with the sheet over it, Jack hadn't been able to see who shut that door.
Though she had no way to tell what was happening outside, Jack had to consider the people in the pods over the charming Dureau. she fluttered up to the largest of the eggs and grabbed the sheet, heaving it away as she flew backwards, clearly curious as to what was contained inside. Jack needed the answers she'd come all this way for.
"Somebody should try an' secure one of'em doors open, we gotta make sure we can get outta here." She said to the others from where she hovered, while she didn't want captured she was sure whomever was running this gig knew she and the others had come to release all their prisoners. Jacks only hope was that she and her partners could free them, rather then joining them.

As if on cue, all the lights in the room extinguished all at once with a loud "clunk," and a new, bright, glaring spotlight appeared directly over them all. For just an instant before the glaring, blinding light came on, Jack may have been able to spy some sort of down-turned birdlike face inside the largest container.
Speaking of birdlike faces... a light inside the control room, the windows of which were mounted high on the wall across the chamber, also came to life, revealing the same, shimmering-cloaked golden figure from before, complete with haunting plague-doctor-like mask.
"So, you've fooouuund the 'phoenix,'" said a scratchy, sarcastic, mocking-sounding voice, amplified by a PA system. "You've come all this way from South Island just to meddle in things far bigger than you. And now that the little sheriff girl and her posse have followed all the 'clues' to the source... what do you think you'll do, hm?"
