It pains me to say this, but we're done. Thank you to those who have participated and followed along these many years. We had a lot of fun, and your contributions will be remembered for a long time to come.

Strangers and visitors of the future, please respect what is ours. If there is anything in the form of writing or rules you'd like to borrow for your own RP, please e-mail me on the gmail account "onsoku" for permission. Chances are I'll grant it if you are a nice, intelligent person, and agree to just a few small stipulations regarding proper crediting method. But please, leave our characters alone. All fan-made, original, non-SEGA characters, character art, and concepts remain property of their respective creators. Please show respect and don't try to take any of them for your own use.

I hope that some of us will be able to move on and have some more fun writing hobbies in the future. No matter what, we'll stay in touch, and this group will live on, even if it has nothing to do with RP.

I love you guys. God bless.

Dureau listened as if focusing intently on what Jack was saying. "Most refer to me by title, but... whatever you please," he replied, with a warm smile that had crept onto his face at some point.

Pause.

"Oh, right," he blinked a couple times. "My apologies; your accent is simply... darling."

... Pause. Insert a few glances between members of the party, as if realizing there were still quite a few people standing around, and a query to be answered.

"And... to... answer your question!" he continued suddenly, clearing his throat and standing rigidly straight once more, trying to save face. "Well. I have seen it myself, but it's... honestly hard to describe. It's simply a bright, fiery light from the sky, with some sort of roaring sound. It descends, hovers for a bit, then flies away."

Thoughtfully, he added, "You may do better to ask some of the townspeople about it... Perhaps someone has seen it from a better vantage point than me. Furthermore, we still need to learn who or what it took last night..."

Ivan canted his head as Dureau seemed royally derailed by the Spaghetti Western accent that Jack displayed. He brushed the back of his neck with a gloved hand as their host then went on to explain what he knew about the light: Not much.

Not that Ivan held such a thing against him. It was a mystery for a reason, after all.

"Well, I dunno if he been taken, but Lancelot be unaccounted fer." He said, of course referring to Sir Corin. Ivan crossed his arms over his chest with a sigh. His eyes already wandering. Wondering to himself where would even be a good place to start shaking down civilians about the light.

"Arr... I need a drink..."

The griffin was listening carefully, and returned the barons smile when he informed her what she could refer to him as. But his comment on her accent turned her entire face red for a second time in as many days. She was so stunned that what Dureau said next probably didn't fully register until a few moments later when Ivan had spoken up.

"I-I-I-hrm" She cleared her throat and tried to pretend she wasn't still blushing. "I reckon thats's a good'da plan as we've got. Lets start at the tavern, that's always been the rumor mill back home."

"Dureau do ya'll have a lista previous victims? Maybe theres'ah connection there we could look inta."

Mako had slipped off the second the pirate had informed him of the bacon's location. Returning with a fistful of the stuff, he made sure to keep a polite distance from Key. He caught the butt-end of Ivan's remark about Sir Corin, and looked around, almost as though he were expecting the absolutely insane aardwolf to show up as though on-cue.

When no such thing happened, the shark thoughtfully chewed on a bit of bacon, looking at the sheriff.
"So... ... we're going to play detective?" he said, unaware of the baron's remarks to Jack.

Dureau shook his head solemnly in response to Jack.

"The police haven't released the information," he explained. "Most of the disappearances have occurred in Mersey; only three known disappearances have happened here in Fremont, though I at least have their names."

He recounted them a bit glumly.

"Mr. Baker—he's actually the butcher, funny that—Ms. Cauldwell, a maid from the hotel, and Dieter Engel, a sort of local football star."

He considered a moment.

"All that they share in common is their youth—all reasonably young—and lack of family, either deceased or estranged."

The koala paled a bit at the idea of having to talk to a slew of strangers- or maybe that was just the residual effect of the bacon scent (she was quite grateful Mako had kept his distance with his snack). The idea of looking into the victims, however, got her attention. "Maybe I can work on that while the rest of you go out socializing?" She offered meekly. "I'm good at patterns'n research... not so much talking." With a shrug, she said, as if it were as typical as commenting on the weather, "I could also get in to some of the victims' houses if need be, at least the Fremont ones today, anyway." Realizing exactly who's company she was in, she glanced between the baron and the sheriff and added, "Not for any illicit means, just t'see if there's any trace of where they might'a gone, or anything, y'know... suspicious. Unless you've already done that?"

"I have looked around some of the homes, but... I would not consider myself a good sleuth," Dureau conceded openly. "Talking to their employers may be worthwhile, as well, come to think of it," he added. "I'm a touch... conspicuous, and regarded differently when I walk around little Fremont here—people enjoy pretending they know more than they truly do, as if to impress me, or conversely take up a defensive posture as though my questioning should suggest I'm suspicious of them. Part and parcel with being most of the town's landlord, I suppose. It's a disadvantage you won't have, though."

Listening to the baron explain the mystery of the light she had slept through, Ember finished up her cheese-covered orange. The thought of going around pestering people with questions seemed like a fun way to spend the day. Nothing wrong with meeting new people. So far, everyone was certainly interesting.

"Sounds like a plan baron-dude. We'll find something. Though personally it sounds like aliens or something."

It was only as Ember finished up her cheese orange that Jack took a notice of what it was she was eating. A look of disgust struck the sheriff as she stepped away from Ember.

"GUH! Was that spray cheese an' ah orange?" she gasped in horror at the thought, her train of thought was derailed for the moment as she shuddered at the thought of the combination. It took her a good few minutes to collect herself after realizing Ember had a very questionable diet.

"How open do you reckon the station in Mersey an' the locals'll be helping outsiders look inta this? I'm a bit concerned our reception'll be one ah distrust. But I 'spose it can't be helped." She said thoughtfully as she pulled a pen and small notepad from her pocket and starting making notes.

"Ya've given us an excellent start Dureau. I ain't fully comfortable with splittin' up just yet, so lets keep together and head to the closest location..." She was clearly getting very business minded. enough time had been spent being shot out of cannons and freezing near to death, it was time to find some missing people.

"Gotta map?"

The baron smiled and nodded and all that good stuff until that last part.

"Ah. A map."

He blinked a couple times. "Living here so long, I'm not sure I even own a—"

"Sir."

The shorter (more polite) butler from the previous night stood next to him holding out a neatly folded map. (When had he even walked up?)

"And, apparently I do!" he corrected cheerfully, took the map, and handed it to Jack. The butler looked highly self-satisfied.

"How did you do that?" Dureau asked aside.

"I obtained one this morning on my errands, sir. Surely you didn't expect them to know their way around intuitively."

Dureau shrugged with a conceding expression, as if to say it hadn't really occurred to me, oops, and turned back to the others.

"Anyway—good luck to you all, and please, do return any time. I have a lead or two of my own I intend to check; hopefully we'll have some information to share with one another this evening."

The butler suddenly chimed in: "Also, I marked the locations of the workplaces of the people I overheard you talking about."

"You're insufferably helpful at times, Luc."

"Thank you, sir."

Ivan, having been stuck in town for at least a few days to a week, if not longer, had a pretty good feel for the quaint little town. And luckily enough, he hadn't been kicked out of all the taverns and pubs yet.

"I'll be checkin' out the local tavern fer leads." He said all too voluntarily and waved to the others before making his exit.

If it were any consolation, he actually did plan on investigating the disappearances, but there was no reason why he couldn't have a drink or two while doing so, was there? And bartenders were an almost too convenient source for current events, most of the time.

Mako watched Ivan's retreating back, and slowly raised an eyebrow as he swallowed the last of his bacon. "... sorry, but... is everyone here insane?" he just up and said, not particularly caring who heard him. After a moment, he looked at Ember, blinked a couple times, and mouthed 'aliens?' (followed, after a second or two, by an equally silently mouthed "that'd be cool").

The shark stretched out, at any rate, let out a deep breath, and tried to recollect-- he had been phasing in and out of the baron's conversation with Jack, honestly. By this point, after all the cannon-travel and walking around in the snow, if something interesting didn't happen, his little sharky mind would be a-melting.

"... so, shall we, y'know, go?" he made a few hand motions, pointing in the general direction of town. "No better time'n the present, and all that."

I am in meditation about the coming skip. I do intend for you guys to drive this story yourselves, but I want to have my thoughts planned out well in advance, so I don't have to just make up too much crap off the cuff, and end up with a gnarled excuse for a story.

Look for a post from me tomorrow.

Once the group got underway, they'd find that they were in for a much more pleasant outing than the previous day. The thin blanket of snow had mostly melted, revealing grass that was actually still a little greenish. Everything was damp and dewy, and there were some clouds, but it was all in all a cool (but not freezing), sunny day.

(For once, maybe it wasn't so bad for Mako in particular. He hadn't been dropped in a desert and there was actually moisture in the air! Go figure.)

The walk down the hill to the small village was unhindered. Things didn't seem all that busy; a car came and went once in a while, puttering off toward town, or back in from town—pretty much the only directions worth traveling—but otherwise, it was quiet. Specifically, it was the kind of quiet that felt almost haunting. Despite the bright weather and charming scenery, the people all looked gloomy and uneasy, and no one seemed to talk a whole lot. And, in some of the more confined passages and alleys between those tall, skinny buildings, it'd be easy for one to feel like he or she was being followed.

The first, closest place marked on their map especially felt like this: the butcher shop.

It was a simple single-story building on the south side of town, built of some sort of pale brick, with a plain shingled roof, steep-angled like all the others in town. Its rear was crowded by some thick woods, and it was surrounded by unkempt bushes, and high grass that swished and swayed noisily in the wind. To its left was a building of unknown purpose, windowless (perhaps a barn or storage shed); to its right, a narrow three-story house, casting a shadow over it. (Its lawn was also also in a similar state.)

The heavy, wooden front door had an unlit lantern hanging over it. The door itself, like most in this town, looked like it could have been run into a couple times by a tank (or a guy named Tank, as it were). However, it was only equipped with a dreadfully old-fashioned skeleton-key-style lock, easily compromised.

... That was assuming they actually wanted to go inside of a abandoned butcher shop, where the small windows gaped with inky darkness, and useless reflections of the outside light, while the overgrown back lot seemed to perpetually rustle in the wind as if things were moving through it.

Meanwhile...

Ivan was chasing his own leads, or rather potiential leads at the local tavern. It was a quaint little inn and eatery. Upon entering the roughly 4 story building, he was presented with the choice of two ways to go. To his left, the restaurant and bar. To his right, check-in lobby for the inn.

Seeing as there were no vacancies in town, the check-in area was of no consequence to him. Peering into the bar, whose doors were opened, which seemed to say they were welcoming business.

Strangely, the place seemed devoid of activity as he made his way inside. Could be that it was just dead at this hour, but it seemed odd that they weren't even serving breakfast.

"Hello?" He called as he strolled inquisitively through the doorway.
