Insert a long, deafening pause. The computer considered this, and must have figured out what Mako meant, because it began analyzing potential issues.

"The reactor core cannot be disabled," it declared. "Reactor control rods are being manually removed by an intruder. Electric turbines are now offline to avoid damage. All safety valves are open. However, core temperature is rising, and will soon reach critical levels. Control rods should be replaced immediately to avoid a potentially-catastrophic core melt accident."

"I hate computers," the fish drawled, a flat look on his face. He had to take a moment to mentally decipher the words spat back out at him (for he was a shark of very little brain, and long words bothered him).

"... fan-freakin'-tastic." A beat. "How would one go about getting on that whole replacement thing, then?" Another beat, as another thought came to him. "And if you say a single snide word about deactivated units, then I am going to stick my foot through the screen."

"... Barring the obvious issues raised by that command," the computer said, again, with a long, almost sarcastic pause, "reactor maintenance and supervision systems have been compromised by the intruder and cannot function, anyway. Structural damage from heat, hazardous build-up of hydrogen gas, and possible resultant explosions should be anticipated."

"..."

Mako gave the computer a long, hard look.

"Fine," he said. He then paused for just a second, to find the words, before he said: "... estimated time left until the big kablooey?"

"If by 'big kablooey' you mean the first explosions, the estimated time frame is... ..."

Calculating.

"Zero seconds to twenty minutes."

In computer-speak, that meant I don't really know, maybe now, maybe a few minutes from now.

Mie-collab

Meanwhile, a pair watched silently from the top of the stairs. One, sooty, burned, and half-blown up, but otherwise identifiable as a white primate, was being helped along a little by the other, redder one.

When had Rock gotten there? Long enough to hear what was going on, because he immediately began to hobble and turn the opposite direction.

"Okay, back down the stairs — back down the stairs," his echoing voice could be heard urging Jam from across the vast platform. "Thing's gotta have escape pods somewhere..."

Jam was either in a surprisingly good mood considering the circumstances, or else, her labored chuckle simply served as a flimsy disguise for her taxed grunts of hobbling effort as she shuffled about, and began a less-than-graceful, hasty descent.

"What's really funny," she huffed, nearly missing a step. "Izzat they prolly still think he's doin' a better job'n you would, f'only on account o' him not trying to blow us all t'hell."

Mako blinked. If he wasn't wrong, that sounded like... He whipped around and saw... nothing. Before he had been able to catch a glance, both monkeys had retreated from view below his line of sight.

He furrowed his brow for the millionth time, and looked at the computer again. "... if there's anything that can stall the explosion, do it. I don't know, I've got no idea what's even going on. And, uh. ... any escape pods anywhere near here?" The shark looked ready to take off after the monkeys -- not to give chase, but because what he had caught of what Rock was saying was, really, probably the best option. However, he at present had the advantage of having the computer, here and (kind of) at his disposal, and he wasn't going to run off blindly into the night, so to speak.

The floor opened directly under Mako, dropping him haplessly into the seat of a waiting Egg Mobile, which rose up and out of the deck of its own accord, hovering silently. It was open-topped, but one could only assume that Eggman's escape vehicle of choice had the necessary equipment for spaceflight.

Mako was utterly dwarfed by the big, leather seat. He could easily fit a few friends inside (both next to him and behind the seat), but nobody like Big, obviously.

"..."

"..."

"What."

For the Nth time that day, Mako found himself lost for words in the face of what had just happened. There was nothing quite like the sickening feeling of the floor dropping out from under one's feet, and it was another short delay as he tried to gain his bearings in the large seat.
Before he even thought for a moment about trying to pilot it, he took a quick mental tally of who he could fit in it, and looked at the control console again.

He didn't think he could fit everyone present, even discounting the obvious no-flow of Big.

"Question stands, computer-doohickey. Any escape pod locations nearby? For, uh. ... future reference."

As the shark spoke, he made a sort of 'well come on' hand-motion to the (presumably) still-nearby Geoff.

"Drop-pod-equipped escape chutes are available throughout the 'Grand Eggtrium,'" replied the computer.

"... You may wish to remember that you have thirty-seven more Egg Mobiles at your disposal, if they are required," it added quietly, gently bumping the current Egg Mobile with another from underneath.

*Bonk.*

"Yeah, yeah, shut up, I'm working on it," the shark muttered, and then looked at Geoff again. "New thought: think we can get everyone out of here with two of these things?"

Things were developing so quickly that between the brief appearance of the monkeys and the growing threat of fiery doom, Geoff's eyes kept snapping between all the variables. Computer to Mako to Eggmobile(s). A labored sigh escaped his lips, feeling almost a bit helpless. Seven had fled (much to his dislike) and Mako's competence with conversing with the computer was worrisome in itself.

"Yeah... yeah, maybe," he finally answered, striding forward. One leap later, he landed in the expansive seat right next to Mako, looking at the control panel before them.

He tapped a finger against his knee.

"We just need to find 'em first."

"Thank you for your vote of confidence," the shark said, picking up on his often-sparkly companion's tone. He had a sort of half-defeated smirk on his face. "'d like to see you do better, I'm just winging this."

Geoff's second comment, though, was a point. ... they were probably still on the floor, right?

"Hey! Computer!" he said. "Two questions. How many of these floaty thingies can I control at once -- like, do the work remotely? Aaand... ... give locations of, uhm, all non-robotic... entities yeah that's a good word present in the... base. Thing."

Mako: wizard with words.

The computer had a hard time coping with the fact that Mako (AKA Dr. Eggman to it) did not know anything he was supposed to know. Nonetheless, it dutifully answered him.

"Egg Mobiles are equipped with your most advanced navigational systems and will go where you direct them, sir," it answered. Preemptively, as if detecting its master's growing incompetence, it added, "If you wish, all Egg Mobiles can be routed to the nearest safe facility where you may... recover."

From your gratuitous head injuries went unspoken.

"To answer your other query: One human departed in escape pod #117 from reactor core corridor 4 approximately 1 minute ago. Another human is currently boarding escape pod #20 in the 'Grand Eggtrium.' Two sapient primates are descending the stairs from this platform. A sapient feline is at the bottom of the stairs. Another sapient feline is ... inside the 'Grand Eggtrium' floor, fifteen meters away. Two other unidentified sapients, one avian and one mustelid, are at the base of this platform, 7-o'clock position. Shadow the Hedgehog is also near the aforementioned's position. ... Sonic the Hedgehog is seated next to you."

Even now, there was still some confusion about Geoff's identity.

"Would you like to reactivate combat units and terminate Sonic the Hedgehog?" it inquired politely.

"Ah. ... yeah, do that. The navigation thing. Thanks, yo."

It was only now, as the computer registered Geoff as Sonic, that he realized exactly what the computer thought of him. ... He looked at Geoff, mouthed why does it think you're So--oh nevermind, and quickly tried to come up with a good explanation (read: opened and closed his mouth a few times).

"Uh."

"... I'll, take care of it myself once we are free of the explosion threat. You know. ... sporting chance?" In the back of his mind he was beginning to wonder, with his newfound realization, if the computer would eventually just give up. "But. For now. Deploy Egg Mobiles. Route them to, uhm... pick up anyone left inside, and then put them on autopilot. You know. No fun to just, uh, crush my enemies in such an impersonal way?"
