The sun still hung lazily low as it continued its day long climb into the sky. Jack flew with haste along the hard stone edge where Central City met the ocean. She searched the coast as she made her way down the stone shore, spotting her green quarry and lowering herself. Jack landed in a jog, heading up to meet the seemingly relaxed hedgehog. "Geoff," she said as she came up behind him, stopping a few feet shy. She adjusted her hat as she looked at him, offing a weary smile in greeting. The hedgehog would have been a peculiar sight upon her arrival. Barefoot and shirtless, it appeared he'd just taken a literal dive into the ocean only mere feet away, water dripping from soppy quills. His gaze having been momentarily lost in the distance as if trying to spot something, the griffin's near silent arrival managed to evade his attention until she was speaking, Geoff jumping slightly in place at her greeting as his head whipped around towards her. "...oh, hey, Jack," he uttered a moment later upon realizing who it was, straightening up from the leaning position he'd held on the railing. He offered a returning smile, although holding a bit more vigor than the ex-Sheriff. In fact, he appeared perfectly at ease before her, lacking the darkened shadows in his expression from the last few days. His eyes returned to the sea. "Nice morning for a walk... or a flight, I suppose." The former Sheriff paused, looking around slowly, as if she wasn't aware that it was in fact a beautiful day out. "I-I reckon it is..." She sounded a little surprised, more so that she'd been so wrapped up that she hadn't noticed. She took a moment to try and appreciate it. But the cause of her visit brought out a sigh. "Somethin's come up, Geoff. I can't be goin' with ya'll," she said finally turning to face him once more. "Hm?" sounded the hedgehog, now busy with trying to ring out water from his spikes. A turn of his body later, though, and she could see his puzzled glance upon her statement. "What's happened?" "Well..." She started, dragging out the word to buy time to consider how to put things. "There's a fella callin' himself Wild Egg, an' It looks an awful lot like Hoji, who ain't been seen hide nor hair in some time. I gotta go sort him out." She seemed to regret having to go to the aid of another so soon after agreeing to help Geoff and GUN, but she was resolute in her choice. "Wild Egg?" Welp, that sure showed what he managed to get out of her explanation. His baffled look upon the familiar name faded off quite quickly, though, when he actually registered her intentions, his cheery spirit abruptly being dampened somewhat, as if being disappointed by her decision. "Well, um..." he began quietly, unsure of how to approach this as he found himself suddenly busy with retrieving his shirt from the ground, a saddened glance being hidden. With every silent, passing second, however, her regret became a bit more apparent, his demeanor brightening once more as he stood up again. "...I'm the one who dragged ya into this mess in the first place, Jack," he continued with understanding, an unexpected grin gracing his lips. "And you got done what was asked. I don't expect ya to stick around just 'cause I have a grudge for Chimera. We all have our priorities." A smile slowly worked across her features as his brightness returned in spite of her bad news. She stepped forward and put her arms around the soggy hedgehog. "I knew ya'd understand," she said with certainty, nodding. If there was one way to get Geoff to completely freeze in place for a few solid seconds, it was probably in this unexpected fashion, his stare now pointedly drilling a hole in the wall behind her as he slowly blinked once. Eventually, though, he managed to return the brief embrace after the initial shock wore off, albeit a little stiffly, chuckling as he regained his bearings. "Just watch out for yourself, alright?" he said with an amused smile as he pulled away. "Last thing I need to do is go savin' your sorry tail if things end up sour." Jack gave him a strained chuckle at his comment, shaking her head. "Ya'll watch yer back too, pardner. Ya've got a good team, just try an' trust 'em. They'll see ya through." The concern her her voice was pretty obvious, though she cast a smile at him. She tipped her hat to him. "I'll be seein' ya'll soon, I'm sure." "We can hope so," he said with a small nod. "Pretty sure I've got somewhere we all can relax once this is done and finished." With a brief glance towards the distant horizon (and perhaps any shark fins that might still be lingering there), his own worry became a bit more blatant as he gave her one last look. "I'm serious, though. It's a pretty crazy out there right now, so watch your step. Not like I'm the shining example, but..." He shrugged helplessly, trying to find the proper way to put it. "...well, things have a tendency to shoot back these days. Make sure you draw first." He showed one brief, sad little smile. "I'll be seein' you." "I will." She replied to him, giving a somber nod, realizing he was right. She turned to go after that taking a few steps before pausing just a moment, cracking a smile as she turned a half step back. "Just do me a favor an' don't give any of them grenades." Geoff shook his head and laughed. "Does it look like I have a death wish?" searchindextag chapter6search |
