Already having worked out that tandem XG scooter-riding wasn't the most viable of solutions at the moment, Jam was already heading back through the house and to the front door, after closing the shed door, and replacing its padlock. The reddish primate was unusually focused as she wound her way through the cluttered home, while Caz trailed behind her, suddenly derailing the monkey's train of thought with her bubbly, car-insurance-salesgirl-like enthusiasm.

Yes, somewhere in the back of her mind, Layla was still aware that time was of the essence, yet she couldn't help but spare the briefest of pauses, as half-way through opening the front door, she leveled a stare at her sidekick-in-training that wordlessly but very clearly asked, "Did you really just say that?"

She popped open the door, descended the porch steps, and heaved her waiting Gear into the backseat of the homely little convertible. Her intended glance to their pearly-furred ring leader turned into a curious double-take, which segued into an investigative tracing of his line of sight; whatever lingering incredulity her vivacious new compatriot may have inspired quickly dissipated in light of the overwhelming WTF sentiments seeing a giant metal blowfish begot.

"Uh--uh! Seeing nothing, reporting same! There was some kind of an--"

Tails looked back at Ace's shout and look forward again in time to realize that something was happening--something that should not have been happening. To add to the chaos of warnings from the flight computer and the unreadable feedback from the radars, three new alerts activated, demanding that attention be turned towards still more parts of the control panel.

'IR FLARE DETECTED'

'ACTIVE RADAR CONTACT DETECTED'

'CHAOS ENERGY DETECTED AT 39.0531TJ(terajoule[s]) WARNING WARNING BREACHING ACCEPTABLE PARAMETERS'

Tails looked at the radar screen and the missile warning system, they were both showing two new objects behind the tornado that were racing at alarmingly fast speeds towards the plane the hapless trio occupied.

So the radar was working. Thank goodness for small favours.

Of course that meant that there were maybe twelve other ships out in the fog now, not to mention...

What?

"Chaos emeralds?"

The shrill screaming of the missile lock alarm brought his attention back to the situation at hand.

"I mean the radar's working and yes there's something out there there are other ships chasing us and maybe some kind of island! Island! And-eggman's-shooting-missiles-at-us-over!"

"WHO BLOODY CARES ABOUT CHAOS EMERALDS RIGHT NOW!? WE GOT BIGGER FISH TO FRY AT THE MOMENT - excuse the pun," he remarked, the tail end of which came out in a very opposing softspoken tenor.

In light of all the beeping and buzzing, the inside of Teck's ears were, in all essences, a madhouse. And the fact that he was unable to do anything about it frustrated him considerably. For now, he kept his eyes on the radar and let the pilot do his job (which so far was a good one, albeit Teck always had his trademark skepticism on reserve).

Yet admist all the hysteria, the word "island" managed to push over all the beeps and crashes and swoops and slither down his ear canal and register within his ever-churning psyche, and so he perked up and hunched over Tails shoulder (Ace probably would not appreciate the sudden discomfort all that much on top of his failure to dispose of any of the puffers with his cards of doom, assuming of course he resumed his 'cozy' seat in his lap). "Island!? THEN LAND THE BLASTED THING! We're safer on ground than we are in the air, at least then we can fend for ourselves with our physical attributes!"

"What...?" The monkey's stare did not go unnoticed by the mole, even though she continued following regardless. She shrugged her arms defensively as she made her way out. "Wha'd I do? I'm just tryin' to make this as painless as possible, y'know, I mean I saw what Rock can do behind the wheel, heh, an', and we don't-- ...whaddya lookin' at?."

Sure enough, just as Jam's gaze followed Rock's, so too did Caz's follow Jam's... and, it...

"Whaddyyyyyyaauuaahhhooohhh my, God."

...stayed there, for a while.

"Arew-arew-are we gonna... fight that?"

---

Elsewhere, Ace the Alley Cat was indeed out there, indeed, fighting that. Or at least, giving it his best shot. Or throw. Whatever. He stopped throwing for the moment.

He knew tossing his cards at something so outrageously huge would have little to no effect, but goddamnit if he wasn't going to try it anyway. Still, even with this knowledge, he couldn't help but swear under his breath didn't so much as scratch their paint job. He swore a little louder, though, when he realized the sudden threat of incoming goddamn missiles.

“Oh, SH**!” he said specifically, too busy facing death to think of anything more clever. If Teck was still leaning on his shoulders when Ace started up again, it was unlikely he'd stay on him unless the porcupine was hiding a kung fu grip all along. The fire on the fish was an experiment. This was an act of concentrated desperation.

His arms went into a flurry that looked rather brutal, despite him not actually punching anything. His jaw, brows tightened in the way they only do when you're too focused on something else to stop it, as a shotgun-like volley of cards were suddenly flung in between the missile and the plane. He prayed to himself-- one of them had to stop it.

Despite the mounting odds against them, the crew of the Tornado was still staying aloft, and that was saying something, given what they were up against. Ace's efforts were actually successful; the bursts of energized cards he flung at the incoming missiles stopped them in their tracks, detonating them too prematurely to cause any damage beyond a harsh, concussive bump or two to the aircraft.

With all the giant ships roaring through the fog, it seemed that it was beginning to dissipate and thin. The murky, ashy cover over the island had boiled around and expanded so much that it was just a thin, misty curtain, allowing the Tornado and its occupants to better see their closing pursuers. The nearest small "puffer" revealed itself to be truer to its nature than they might have previously thought, as the large, metal panels of its fuselage expanded out from its body, making it seem to swell as it revealed crevices full of missile pods.

Missiles swarmed thickly through the air, from numerous directions behind and flanking the biplane. Yet, not all of them were directed at Tails and company.

There were other aircraft on the scene. Steely-grey fighter jets roared in from above the city, launching ordnance of their own at the big, green, fish-like airships. No one in a right state of mind could possibly see the exchange ending well, but at least they seemed to take some small amount of the heat off.

"You keep talkin'bout this we business," Rock muttered in response to Caz as he leaned back on his bike (Could one really call something wheel-less a bike?) and listened to the radio. He didn't have anything against the girl, he considered her kind of a nuisance at the moment, and a logistic third wheel.

He again raised the radio to his mouth and clicked the button. There was no advice he could give Tails that wasn't obvious, and nothing he could do to directly intervene. A glance to the horizon had reminded him that time was of the essence, too; the sun was coming close to setting, and with it, another wave of invasions would begin. As such, his reply was very short.

"I'll try to get to the island now while they're distracted."

He clipped the handset back on his belt and started forward, but didn't leave the yard just yet.

"Forget the car," said the white monkey to the redder one. "Let's just head straight for the waterfront."

With a distinctly resigned although nonverbal expression to their extraneous party member, Jam acknowledged Rock only with the nigh inaudible grunt she made as she excavated her second-hand ride from the backseat from whence she'd just laid it to rest.

Its continued cooperation was decidedly both less surprising, and less pleasing than the whiter primate with his own equipment, and as the Gear hummed to life, there was a marked absence of spring in the simian's step when she wheeled it around by its handlebars, and mounted it with a running start.

The monkey made a single warm-up lap around the sad little convertible, tossing a lone, tagged key back at the stranded mole with little more than a somewhat apologetic,"Stay safe."

As the jet fighters began screaming by, a ripple of turbulence spread out from their slip stream, shaking the tornado's frame in the air.

Missiles began firing.

Tails slipped the tornado closer to the water, trying to trick the missiles' oblivious radar systems into colliding with the waves. He glanced back at Ace.

"Hold on!" He yelled.

The unknown land-mass approached, on the radar, as the tornado sped along the water.

The two X-gear bikes were soon zooming their way through traffic, headed for the coast. It wasn't even a minute later before Rock took the first available opportunity to blast straight off of one of Spring City's lower cliffs, and plummet to the water below.

That was the great thing about Gears—They could comfortably take drops like nobody's business, especially onto water. They were otherwise just a little too slow for Rock's taste, though.

With the fogbank centered up ahead, Rock twisted the throttle wide open, and started making his wild, wave-jumping way out toward where there was allegedly an island. Aircraft were still shooting around overhead (both figuratively and literally, with missiles), and the huge, puffer-like craft seemed engrossed with an obsessed single-mindedness on their biplane target, so it was a pretty open shot, or so it seemed.

Along the way, he began to notice some details; sand bars that didn't used to be there had apparently risen with the new island. A long trail of them extended through the water, like dots of small, sandy islets leading up to the goal. The primate took to following them, hoping that the route might be a bit safer—That is to say, if there were any underwater threats left, they hopefully wouldn't be a threat thanks to the shallow waters.

"For the record," Rock shouted to Jam over the noise of the surf and the humming Gears, "you're gonna be my trump card today, 'cause I ain't got anything to bust heavy machines. And with emeralds, and Sonic's... fat... pleather-pants buddy involved, there's gonna be somethin' out here."

Jam followed the leader unfazed by all his finesse and daredevilry, though she emulated it with decidedly less (if any) grace. Frankly, by the time she hit the water, she was quite pleased that she and her scooter were still in one place as opposed to two or more. Of course the trend of the last several hours was that no good news could come without some contrast, and speeding towards certain danger, barely armed, would certainly bear no exceptions.

Without knowing the snowy simian as well as she did, the revelation that she was the ace in the hole might have elicited laughter or amusement of some kind, since it must be a joke; as that wasn't the case, and she knew him to be irrefutably serious, her already lacking enthusiasm merely soured further, poorly matching all the saccharine forced into her hollered "Fantastic."

A half-second of silence punctuated her response.

"Is the 'moving to another island' option still on the table?"

"Er, wha...?"

Caz's eyes merely trailed Jam's circle in mild, yet poorly-hidden confusion before the realization finally dawned on her.

"Oh, wait-wait-waitwaitWAAIIT--UUUUUUH...!?"

At first she started to bolt after them, like a kid chasing down a school bus, but sprinting was not her strong spot, especially when the chase-ees were riding away on Extreme Gear. Predictably, she stopped short, hands-on-knees panting, (not terribly far from the house, actually) and looking up in disdain at the two getaway simians.

"Fuh, FINE!," she shouted, cupping her hands around her mouth. "I hope you like your MILK WITH EXTRA URINE!"

Huff. Wheeze.

"...Nooo, okay," she admitted. "Okay, I kinda had that coming..." She stood herself straight, scratched her head/played with her hair, and semi-moped her way back to the house from whence she was dropped off. That other guy seemed nice enough company, anyway. What was his name? Jared? Jacob?

---

Ace felt his balance wane upon the first missile's embryonic explosion as he stumbled, but ultimately keep his feet where they needed to be, even if he needed to shield his eyes from the blast. From there, all the events and explosions and general sh** goin' down just started to blur together.

But whatever. He saw enough of the fighter jet to realize they'd serve as the world's most welcome distractions, shook his head in disbelief of the general situation, moved the rest of his body out of Teck's seat (making sure he still had a good hold), and mumbled out loud:

"Okay. Okay, now what?"

One of the missiles clipped a wave, nosed into the water, and blew its twin off course fair enough that it over-corrected into another wave. There was a boooom behind them that thumped their bodies like a heartbeat, and a brilliant glare as the now-vaporized missile casings expanded around the bubble of super-heated gas that had been where the tornado was only seconds before.

Tails instinctively dodged down in the cockpit, and then peered back again at Ace for a second before diverting his attention thoroughly, once again, to the control panel.

"You alright?" he yelled back to the two of them, "I'm going to try and hide behind the island! If Eggman doesn't have any super-low defenses we can probably evade all this by staying near the cliffs!"

Tails' opponents had been "plinking" at him at first—Trying to take the Tornado down with relatively little firepower, as if just to disable it rather than obliterate it. But, the arrival of the air force, combined with the little fox's own persistence in being evasive, drove them to let it all rip, and soon enough, there was no angle from which the over-ten-giant-bogeys weren't unleashing swarms of missiles, and in just about every imaginable direction, too. Explosions rang out from virtually everywhere in the sky, including all over the airships as they were bombarded by the fighter jets' missiles, and vice-versa, leaving wreckage to rain down from above in coarse chunks and fine sprinkles.

Yet, it probably wasn't going to be a missile that put an end to the flight of the Tornado; instead, it was most likely a wave.

Water certainly had it in for Tails. Directly in front of the low-flying aircraft, just a hundred meters or so from the island itself, a tremendous wave was blasted up by one of the "mini" puffers, which had somehow managed to get ahead, and massively belly-flop its way into the Tornado's path with the force of a typhoon.

The biplane's passengers had wanted to get out of the air... They were probably about to get their wish, for better or worse!

Tails looked ahead. A wall of water was approaching. He wrenched back on the controls again, silently hoping that the plane wasn't planning on suddenly falling apart after the beating it had gone through.

The plane climbed up, and, up, and--

"Uh...uhhhHHHHHEEAAAAAAAAALOOKOOU--"

It was too late. At the point the tornado hit it, the wall of water was maybe a little under three meters thick, and at that speed they might as well have hit a wall. The aerodynamic construction of the tornado did relatively little to cushion the blow, and it was with a tremendous explosion of water that the Tornado flew through the wave and emerged on the other side.

Completely wet again, and with all the lift of a tennis ball, it came to a sloppy rest in the ocean.

"I'm fine, I'm fine!" Teck answered Tails' rather impish attempt to see to their vitality, as low and go as it was. Then the wall of water came - "AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! WE'RE GONNA BLOODY DIE!"

They weren't going to die...

They weren't going to crash...

Hell, they probably wouldn't even feel a thing...

Tell that to one as dainty and secure as Teck, though, and he'll give you a whole MEDLEY of reasons to be very afraid. After they excavated into the curtain of h20 with a most baleful impact, he squinted behind those shiny spectacles (which luckily shielded his eyes from getting doused unlike the rest of his hide) and braced himself for what he was sure would be his ascent into the afterlife. The aftermath was bright blue skies (fog) and calm and peaceful beaches (that would undoubtedly lead to a rampant batalion of robots on an island they were sure was under the watchful eye of none other than Dr. Robotnik as he was seldom called). Looking about as irritated as an eight year old in 1999 that didn't get a Furby for Christmas, he spat out a nice wad of saltwater allover Ace's leather-attired back, finishing, "Correction. I'm wet, I'm wet."

... five seconds of silence... wait for it... waaait for it....

"We landed on the blasted WATER? ... I thought your piloting skills were unrivaled! Bah-hum, well I guess you couldn't have avoided it. Jolly good show, Tails, jolly good show," the porcupine complimented with a firm pat to the foxes shoulder (which may have not been worth the effort considering his haphazard contortions to maneuver around Ace). "Still, there's no use dilly-dallying! The safest spot right now is the island, ironically enough. How we are going to get there, though, is the question. How are your sea legs, mates? Well, maybe that's not the right query... who can swim and outmaneuver a potential underwater assault? Only Chaos knows what metallic monstrosities lurk under this calm maritime."

(OOC: Something short and collaborative with Mie.)

Rock glanced at her repeatedly out of the corner of his eye as he kept speeding along, the bike jerking and lurching as it popped over waves, and skimmed across sandbars.

"You're not actually worried, are you?"

"Worried!" scoffed the grapefruit-hued monkey in reply, deliberately avoiding eye contact with her unyielding steely gaze straight ahead.

"Psh," she sputtered in vague dismissal, through the constant bobbing of her gear, which was quickly followed up with a brisk cough. "... 'worried,' nah."

Translation: Petrified.

He looked ahead again. Things were pretty chaotic, to the point where he couldn't hear her muttered denials, nor could he even tell the Tornado had crashed. Maybe it was on the other side of the island altogether.

"This is 'the Eggman'. He won't give us a second glance or spare us time of day if we're not hedgehogs. Problem is, ain't no hedgehog showin' up yet. You know as well as I do what happens when people like this go unchecked, especially with emeralds, so,..."

They were actually already closing in, and still without significant hazard. Then again, the sun hadn't set yet, either.

"Way I see it, we either blindside his sorry ass now, or have a bigger mess later. Don't you think it's better this way?"

"Aw, damnit all," she moaned loudly, hunching lower against her handlebars. "I hate it when y'appeal t'reason like that -- Now f'Isay no, I'll look like a big douche."

She spared a glance up towards the white rider, baring the briefest of grins, if only to reassure that despite her complaining, she was inextricably on-board.

"You got any plans t'how we're gonna do this thing, or what?"

He shrugged his shoulders and kept facing toward the island. It was finally taking clear, visible shape in the fog.

"Not really."

How comforting!

"We can try to stay incognito, see what we can find. With Tails around, and the 'guardian' somewhere around here, we hopefully won't catch much attention."
