Toby shrugged. He had two chao... seemed like as good a plan as any. Like a loose tooth or a guy in the girl's bathroom, that emerald needed to come out, and quick.

"Well boys," Toby turned to the two hovering chao. "...You heard the cat. You take the hat, and you..." Toby patted the pink-eyed chao on the head. "Get that pack and get out as quick as you can. Let me know when you guys are on your way out, and I'll open the door." Toby smirked and placed his hand out in front of him. "All in!"

The two chao smirked at each other like mischievous children being told they just got a free ticket to wreck up the house. Both of the little guys placed their hands on Toby's, one after the other.

"One, two, three, get crackin'!" The boy raised his hand up, tossing the two smaller hands into the air.

"Chu bii!!"

"Tu mi, tu mi!"

Toby began silently counting down from five with his hand, and when every finger had collapsed back into his palm, the boy pulled the door open just wide enough for the two munchkins to slip through.

The first of the pair went straight for the sheriff's hat, yanking it off the poor Griffin's head if she wasn't able to catch him in time. "Hee hee hee, shi jubi!" The chao would hold the hat just out of Jack's reach, flashing the woman an innocent and playful smile.

The second, on the other hand, wasted no time at all in shooting for the pack, which he seemingly had no trouble finding. Who knew what led the chao to the out-of-sight pack, be the creature's natural connection to chaos energy or an ability that Rock's DNA had so graciously bestowed on him. Either way, however, pinky was on that sack like white on rice, his hands wrapped around its straps and starting toward the door once again.

In the time it had taken for Toby and the Kyles to form their little plan, Sheffer had slumped to the floor, leaning back on the wall as he sat there, letting the crystal consume him. It had now covered a large portion of his chest (still going over his clothes, strangely enough), but luckily, he felt no breathing constrictions. The shell was acting more like a second layer of skin then a tomb, which still wasn't promising enough for him.

Then, the door swung open a bit, the two chao rocketing in. Sheffer didn't even flinch, not even truly caring what the two were doing... but that was only the truth until he saw the pink-eyed one dart to his bag.

Before he realized his body had even moved, he had jumped to his feet, literally diving at his pack as the chao snatched it up, his own crystallized hands gripping the material tight. He knew what was happening now, and there was absolutely no chance he was going to let anyone near the emerald... not after what it did to him.

Tails finished whatever procedure it was he was embarking on, and turned around in time to see the cotton-candy pink and blue duo blitz past his head on their way to wreak havoc and chaos on the world at large. One of them made a bee-line for Sheffer's knapsack.

"Wh—!" Tails began, before Sheffer leapt across the room and dove for the same pack.

"Hey!" he yelled, and raced at the pack on the floor, grabbing for its straps.

"Ace, huh...?" Rekk scratched his chin. "Well if something's happened to him, then..." He paused, his thought hanging incomplete for a few seconds. "...let's just hurry up."

"You're the one with experience with the hedgehog and this sheriff, so tell me straight Rock, d'you think I can just flash some credentials and get them to give up the emerald or is it gonna be...more difficult than that?"

Jack was concerned about Sheffer, her attention hadn't left the poor boy before her head suddenly felt cooler. She turned to see a giggling chao floating around with her hat. Without thinking about it she held out her hands.

"Here little guy. Give Sheriff back her hat..." She said softly trying to coax the cute little thing into working with her.

It was then she heard the scraping crash of Sheffer hitting the floor, him and tails, fighting the pink eyed copy of the chao with her hat for his sack. She hesitated only long enough to give a sideways glance at the one with her hat, before walking over.

She stopped behind them, her arms crossing over her chest as her consirned look set firmly into a scowl. Something in the bag, obviously, they all wanted very badly to protect.

"Give me the bag." She said firmly. Jack was done with these games. They had been keeping something from her and she needed to know what it was. "Now."

Sheffer glanced up to the griffin, then down to the other two, all three having a tight grip on the bag. The sheriff was serious, one could easily tell that, and having a miniature tug-of-war was just going to make matters worse. And, really, she was one of the few who actually had tried to take action through the mayhem of his spreading condition. He owed her that much.

With one quick jerk, he managed to rip the bag away from the chao and fox, tossing it over to Jack without a word or glance. He knew the others wouldn't be too happy about this...

She took the bag, givinga dirty look at all three before she flipped it open. There was a painfully long pause as she stared at the contents, she took a deep long breath like she was trying to swallow her anger as she turned towards the door, opening it to see Mako and Toby standing there expectingly. Her eyes narrowed again, that explained the chaos. She threw the bag at Toby, clearly angry.

"I can't even FATHOM the sorta irresponsibility that make's ya'll think HIDIN' that was a good idea. Do ya 'ave any idea how much trouble yer bringin' down on my deputy's without so much as'a warnin'?!" She snapped at all who was still present. Nudging Toby towards the door with the bag as she urged them out. "Get yer'selfs tageither, we're leavin' NOW 'fore Eggman nuke's us from orbit."

"Goddarn punks... 'an gimmie my hat!"

Rock thought about it a second, then made one of those squinted "ehh" faces with an open-handed shrug. "I doubt Jack'll be happy, but if anybody says 'no,' you can have a couple hundred MPs from the AFB down here in what, three minutes?"

The door to the small lobby-vestibule area before the receptionist's counter swished quietly as Rock pulled it open and held it for his well-dressed accompaniment. (And Jam, too, I guess.) That government building smell wafted out, distinct yet utterly ambiguous as always, caught mysteriously between floor cleaner, mothballs, and eau de public transit. (Rock hated that smell.)

"I think it'll be okay, though, as long as you do all the talking. My presence might be... incendiary, especially if she realizes I called you here."

Toby, reeling in shock from the Sheriff's discovery, caught the pack with a "Whoof!!" as it hit him in the chest, nearly knocking the wind out of him.

Little boy blue, on the other hand, was gently placing Jack's hat back on her head with a sheepish grin plastered all over his tiny mug. "Soba tu mi, zu..." He patted the woman's head, and wheeled around to fly back to Toby.

Pinky followed suit, turning tail and booking it as things went sour. "Heh heh, aaah, chu bi lo..." The little thing gave a salute to the fox and the 'hog, and was on his way, exiting the room right after his counterpart.

"I, uh.... uh..." Toby's eyes looked everywhere but into Jack's. His free hand drifted up and began fiddling with his ear. "Kay, I'm on it..." The kangaroo rat plodded back to the room with his stuff, turning to the cat preoccupied with his doughnuts. "...Well, we got it." The boy shrugged. "I guess we should'a taken the other two into consideration... Didn't think they'd be a problem..." With that, Toby ran off to change clothes, dropping the pack at the foot of his bunk.

In about thirty seconds, the kangaroo rat had on a new pair of white cargo shorts and a sky blue "Strata Sky Sports" shirt on. His head shook back and forth, his mussed up hair falling back into it's trademark blown-back look.

Target looked around, almost in a panic. What was happening?! He lowered his weapon but not before shaking it menacingly at the hanger on and his chao. He jogged over to Toby's side, letting out a long groan. "You took her hat? Ughhh. It's so early for her to be in a rotten mood."

"Toby," she said in a softer voice, looking to him before returning to the men's room to help Sheff. "You may want to let Target carry that rock. Unless you'd like a nice shiny new skin too."

"Oh! Oh! I can carry all your bags if you'd like. I'm real strong!" He said happily. raising an arm like it was a muscle and not metal plates.

Mako gave a little groan as the backpack hit Toby, and muttered something that might have been "I didn't even do anything"-- which may in fact have been the problem, he realized after a minute. And now it was going to end with desert. Going out in the desert. A fish in the desert.
Hopefully, this would not end in more tacos being thrown at his head.

He sighed, slipping his shoes on and adjusting his gloves a bit. Nothing quite like wearing next-to-nothing in the DESERRRRTTTTT, exposing to the elements... Would he ever stop whinging on that subject?
Not a chance.

"Nnnngh, I'm gonna thwack Sparkly."
He rubbed the back of his head, peering into the bathroom and pointedly avoiding looking at the lacking-clothes Ace, the irony that he, himself, was usually mostly naked not hitting him at all, before looking to Toby.
"Yeah, mousey-man Toby," he muttered, rubbing the back of his head. "We don't need t'be walkin' around with another golem. It'd kinda suck if anyone else did, yeah...?"

Before Jack could even reenter the men's room, the door banged open suddenly. Out walked the crystallized figure that was Sheffer, his feet heavy on the floor. The rock had grown smooth and clear over his face, barely giving the sheriff a glance as he trudged past her. His movements were smooth for one covered in such a material, but his overall speed in things appeared to have slowed.

Not saying a word (it was unknown if he could even speak at the moment), he walked across the room past the staring occupants. With steady movements, the crystal glinting in the light of the room, he grabbed his board, letting his arm hang at his side as he carried it. Turning around, he made a bee-line straight to Toby, snatching his bag from his hands. Using his clumsy fingers (hard to grip with an inch of rock encasing them) he managed to open the pack, his hand diving in and taking out the emerald. It glowed, its light reflecting off Sheffer as his similarly colored blue eyes stared at if for a moment, contemplating.

After what seemed a moment of thought, he whipped around to Target, forcing the rock into the CT's hands. Without a word, he walked out of the room, his board in one hand, his pack in the other, leaving only the fading sound of his feet grinding across the floor.

Unfortunately for Toby, Ace wasn't about to spend his time sulking around his donuts while the plan went down (and boy, did it ever go down). Rather, he'd already hoarded his stash and moved his butt down to the guest room (or at least he assumed it was a guest room), slapping on his old change of clothes and wolfing down a fried pink wheel. He wasn't necessarily moving as quickly as he could, however-- just multitasking. As a kid, he loved westerns-- but somehow, after his stay, the nostalgia for dusty saloons was lost, and replaced with almost a relief that his stay was no longer welcome.

And then he heard Jack explode at the others from across the hall.

The cat froze in the middle of buttoning his jeans as his eyes stared like a deer in the headlights at the wall. He tilted his head up, tightened his lips, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and puffed a breath of air from his nose. He didn't have time to waste. He immediately picked up his cell phone and took note of the missed call from a number he didn't recognize, whispering an expletive under his breath.

Redial was his friend, and he put the phone to his lofty ears. The ring tone kept him company while he waited, but it was hardly a solace when he knew the others might leave any minute while he stood there putting on his shoes.

The phone rang, and rang, and rang... Then there was a quiet click as it was answered, and the sound of wind, breathing, and distant voices followed.

"Hallo,... boooooy."

Somewhere not far away, there was a marginally insane, hunch-backed vagrant of indeterminate (but smelly) species who had answered a ringing train station pay phone. Unfortunately for Ace, this particular effort was a waste of time, as Rock was no longer present to receive the call.

Meanwhile, the hand of fate dealt another unfortunate blow right there in the sheriff's office. As it would turn out, the sheriff had unwittingly ordered that the highly unstable Chaosol Emerald be placed in the care of a CE-powered robot. Almost immediately on contact, a noisy whir began to emanate from the Chaos Drive power source in poor Target's chest, and his internal temperature began to climb rapidly to dangerous levels. Without the stability of any kind of living biology to absorb and cope with the bizarre energies of the emerald (as Sheff's body had apparently found a way to, despite its undesirable crystalline byproduct), the results would be the same as was seen in Eggman's own weaponry.

In short, Target had roughly ten seconds to drop the gem before his exploding, armored carapace had the chance to do some small-scale thermonuclear renovation for the department by taking out a few walls and creating a new skylight.

"Ha-aa-AA-AAHHSS'D'CH JEEZ'HS!" cried the serval, as his entire face and body reeled back in disturbia, the cell-phone fumbling through his hands like it was a bar of soap. It fell to the carpeted floor with a muted thud, and after a second or two of unsettled staring at the contraption, he quickly moved but one finger to the "off" button and just as soon retracted, as if it had suddenly become diseased.

"That's... not a good sound..." The trooper looked down at himself as his internal temperature spiked, He immediately panicked and threw the crystal without thinking about it. "YEEEK!" he squealed.

"Wha-!" Without thinking the shocked sheriff moved jumping towards the falling item of power. Good thing she had her hat back because she immediately whipped it off and extended it, the emerald landed harmlessly within. She gasped staring at the unstable item. "Somethin' tells me we don't wanna break this. TARGET." She snapped. Glaring at the trooper who kicked an invisible can looking down.

"Don't leave yet Sheffer. Maybe we can figure out how to right ya." She said looking sadly at the hedgehog. Then her eyes set on the emerald glowing in her hat, then took a deep breath, as if expecting a lot of pain to follow and put the hat and emerald on her head. "No one else's gonna get hurt by this. I can't knowin'ly let ya'll in danger yerselves... 'less Rock wants it. That boy's free ta grow a new butt on his face."

"Sorry about that... Felt like I was gonna burst..." He said meekly in his defense. Jack didn't look like she was listening.

"Time ta go people." She said holding the door out of the dorms open for everyone. She seemed uncomfortable, to say the least. "Get yer crap tagether. Head down the stair's to the right and ignore anyone with a 'Press' badge. We gotta get outta town 'fore there ain't nothin' left of it."

A rocky hand suddenly landed on Jack's shoulder, Sheffer getting her attention. He had stood in the doorway as the commotion with the CT had occured, their only option for a carrier for the energized emerald now gone. As the griffin looked to him, he made the motion of having an open palm before him, his other hand seemingly scribbling onto the other with an invisible instrument. He looked to her expectingly.

The golden sheriff stared at the poor soul encased in crystal. Paper? Pen? How he'd use such a thing with his hands so huge was beyond her. She checked her pockets, patting herself down, but turned up nothing. Mimeing would have to suffice. "You want the rock back. Don't you?" She said cooly. He'd been protective of it thus far, and it didn't seem like a stretch for him to want to continue and hold it if only to protect others from his fate.

His first response was a immediate nod, but before she could reply, he started a series of motions. First, he pointed to her hat where the emerald was obviously contained, then raising an arm, his finger then pointed to the crystal, then finally to her. He repeated the cycle again, as though hoping she would get the message.

"I know." She said softly, She raised a dismissive hand as she herself headed out the door into the rest of the station. It was time to go, she couldn't wait anymore. "I don't much fancy the idea of being crystal either. But ya've done enough Sheff. We need ta concentrate on gettin' you furry again 'fore we worry about what the rock is doin' to my head."

Still incapable of making any the tiniest of grunts, Sheffer reverted down to a large stomp of his foot, the rock smashing into the floor as he stalked after Jack. Without any hesitation, he marched through the door and snatched the hat from her head, taking the emerald along with it. Before defiantly walking off, he tossed back her hat before hurriedly moving down the hall away from her.

"DARNYOU" She snapped picking up her hat. Then she pointed a finger at Sheff. "SWEAR to me, ya wont run off. Yer stayin' with me 'till we get ya back to normal. An' yer gonna gimme that rock, if I ask for it. Just please. Don't be stubborn. We gotta work together here."

Sheffer turned back, and through the crystal, one could an annoyed look, as though questioning her opinion on his actions at that moment. Yet, his hand rose, giving a typical cross over his heart before putting his back to her again, continuing to move along.
