That morning, the rest of the party that wasn't heading for Spring City or staying behind set out for Route 99. Midian had a vehicle parked not far off the highway, in some bushes: a dumpy delivery van, tall, boxy, and white, with blue fenders. It was certainly not made for comfort or speed, but it had plenty of room, and, best of all, with no windows in the rear compartment, no one would easily see the many suspicious passengers it carried. That made for a dark, monotonous drive through the long, long Marble Mountain tunnel, though. The clattery buzz of the engine thrumming through the metal floors; the steady whoosh of the road; the flicker of long-life sodium vapor lamps coming in the windshield and passing through the the doorway from the cab... Maybe it would have lulled someone to sleep, were it not for the utter lack of seats anywhere in the cargo area. That's right—no seats at all in the thing, save for the driver (the jackal) and one passenger (their axolotl navigator).

The vehicle eventually eventually emerged to beaming sunlight. Yellow Desert was a strange kind of microcosm like that; enter the tunnel around grass and conifers, exit to barren rock and sand. It wasn't a vast desert, contained in a relatively small area of an island that wasn't even that big, but it was hot and unpleasant. It wasn't long before they were veering off the beaten path and rumbling off across those sweltering flats, bumping and jostling across the cracked, weathered earth. And, it wasn't long before they were flat out stopped, either.

The van was not made for such heat. The temperature gauge was not simply "in the H," but rather soaring majestically over the H, and threatening to come back around to C for another lap. There was a squealing sort of hiss coming from the engine compartment, and when Midian did finally relent show the truck some mercy, it uttered only a tired fart in thanks, and died with a mechanical fanfare that sounded like a few toolboxes being dropped at once.

*SssthbBBBPT.*

Steam puffed out from the edges of the hood, out the grill, and all up the front of the windshield. Midian sighed.

Coop lay in the back of the van, asleep. His tremendous bulk piled up in the corner of the van like a beached sperm whale — he lay with his arm draped over the top of his head, and his head in the crook of his elbow. The day had been a long one, so had the night before that, and the day before that, and most people who had spent their life fighting one thing and battling another gradually learned over the years to sleep when the opportunity for sleep presented itself. This was one of those opportunities.

Then the van ground to a stop, and Coop threw himself upright.

"Get out of—" he began, swatting at some invisible pest that had been occupying his dreams. He stopped, and looked accusingly around at everyone.

"What—are we there? What's going on."

No answer from the front. The driver, not immediately visible from the very back of the van because of the rather narrow doorway, could be heard exiting, swinging open then banging shut his squeaky sheet-metal door.

Dry, dry dirt crunched under Midian's olive boots. He stopped around the front, raised the hood, and, with rag in hand (and not a whole lot of caution or self-preservation in mind), twisted the radiator cap off then immediately hunkered down and back, squinting and shielding his face with a beige-sleeved arm as a mighty plume of steam burst in all directions.

He set his hands on his sides and stared at the mess, feeling his own temperature start to rise just like the van's had, from the top of his dark-haired head down.

The trip hadn't been that uncomfortable for Aga, what with having spent the whole time not giving directions sunken into the too-big-for-his-little-body seat with his feet up on the dash. Once the van finally gave up the proverbial ghost, however, the axolotl's expression went from content to annoyed. He watched the jackal leave and once it became clear this wasn't a quick fix, he responded to Coop with a grumble. "What's hopefully not going on is us losing our vehicle in the middle of the blasted desert."

With a hand desperately trying to block the sun out of his eyes and his gills drooping comically from the dry heat, Aga leaned out the window to address the former driver. "So. Are we?"

"Are we what — walking?" replied Midian, ambling slowly around the front fender to Aga's side of the vehicle. He hadn't heard the axolotl, but guessed close enough. "Because, I think,... yes. Or we wait here for some time."

He set his rag-holding hand down on the edge of the open engine compartment and leaned casually, perhaps waiting for the others to sort out their reactions, dread, and plans.

Tabitha had succumbed to the stifling, crowded darkness, and nodded uncomfortably off at some point in the tunnel. As Coop was a very large specimen of a bird, and the newly acquainted feline was still rather fond of her personal space, she sat awkwardly jammed into the corner between the back door and the rattly metal wall of the van, her legs to her chest, feet on the floor, and her head lolling gently with the motion of the vehicle, her neck certain to make her regret it upon waking up.

Speaking of which, as something suddenly swatted at her tail, the dozing feline jolted awake, all wide eyes and puffy fur, until her brain could register all the strange words flying around.

"Wh-wh-wh-what's going on?" she asked, failing to fight off a yawn as her ears laid back. "Are we there?"

"Uuahhhhh... I don' think so..."

Ace might've not been the only one to catch some shut-eye on the desert-bound carpool, but it was a likely he was the one who needed it the most. Between getting stabbed, marooned in space, and... some synonym for 'betrayed' he wasn't even sure of yet... it was quite a week he had. So suffice to say he slept like a freakin' rock through the whole ride. Heck, ol' alley cat might've even been snoozing before the van even took off, but he made sure to give Coop his fair share of free space. Perhaps understandably, he was still sore (in several ways) over his attempted kidnapping not so long ago. Professional grudge holder, he was.

But back to the present.

Ace woke up sweating, hastily shoving his makeshift jacket-blanket off as quickly as a man in his half-awake state could. Following a few deep breaths and his thoughts on the situation to Tabitha (he'd peeked out at the front window for his answer), the serval was checking his (amazingly still functional) cell phone for any updates... and rides. It still had about enough juice to last another day or two, but it'd take somebody who'd just woken up to think they could possibly get any reception in the middle of the desert.

He croaked out a swear, tied his jacket around his waist, and exalted the need to sigh deeply out of his system before he stood up and stepped out. "I'm gonna check it out," he said, mostly to the other feline of the bunch.

An arm shielded his eyes from the morning sun. "How uh..." he began, before realizing he had no idea how to elaborately say what he was thinking. "...Are we screwed?"

Rodolf cracked one eye open as the vehicle came to a less than graceful stop. He hadn't been sleeping, but merely had elected to spend much of the ride with his eyes closed and head leaned back-- there was nothing to look at besides the lovely visages of those others sitting around like so much cargo.

"Hmm," he muttered as he got to his feet. He wobbled a bit, if only from acclimating to no longer being in motion, and stepped out behind Ace.

"Probably," he said flatly in answer to the cat's comment, as he shielded his eyes from the sun with one hand. He was, recall, a native of an environment far different from desert-- whether or not he had accumulated to other climates was irrelevant; he gave a sort of huff of displeasure, the stifling heat hitting him like a truck.

Well, at least it wasn't humid.

The unicorn frowned, and looked around. "We hoofing it?"
Perhaps there was some irony in the phrasing, considering the remarkably hoof-devoid equine who was using it, but that was far from the point.

The door now open, Coop rolled slowly over until he flopped out, feet first. He slowly straightened himself up, making a series of low popping noises, like a cracking iceberg.

He relaxed his shoulders and stared at the van for a moment. He looked over to the hood, where Midian and the radiator were fuming in harmony. He frowned and stalked over.

He looked over the engine, hopelessly.

He grunted and turned away.

"Great place to need water," he said.

"Anyone know what, uh, where some water is or something? I guess the mountains pretty much guarantee there won't ever be a decent cistern around here, so we're gonna need to find a spring or something."

"I've got bottled water," said Midian, shaking his head slowly. "We would still have to wait a long time not to crack the engine block." Cool water on rip-roaring hot engine would be the fastest way to no longer have a working engine, and fortunately, he was aware of it.

The jackal turned to face the direction they were traveling, let out a long exhalation as he crouched, and began to stretch his stiff legs like a proper runner.

"I scheme he's got the right idea," he explained, motioning toward Rodolf. "This desert's very small. We a'far enough off of the road to not be spotted, and we're fast, nè?"

As Tabby emerged from the van, squinting blearily at the sharp contrast in lighting, her gradually solidifying cognizance caught up to the conversation, and she seemed to perk up like a flower under a watering can at the mention of running. Running meant doing something she was good at; it meant open air, and not stuffy darkness. Immediately, raised both arms overhead in a laced-fingered stretch before she rolled her head on her shoulders, wincing subtly midway through.

As she glanced around at their party, however, she frowned, edging closer to the other feline.

"Not to be... um," she paused, pursing her lips nervously as she twiddled her index fingers and lowered her voice, before at last selecting a word, but not without a dissatisfied twitch of her nose. "...Rude, I guess, but... Are you... you know, up to this? I mean, your wound looks ...not good."

There was a bit of sluggish movement from within the recesses of the van, followed closely by a grunt of laziness before the spiky member of the group was found leaning out the door. After the activity of the last few days, it managed to catch up with him, the previously alert hedgehog managing to fall into a deep sleep despite the traveling accommodations. Now, he squinted out into the desert air, feeling as if he had suddenly come full circle back to the place where he'd become a crystal-growing freak.

With a small "hup", Geoff landed onto the packed ground outside, feeling the heat wash over him. He allowed only a small sigh as he rubbed his eyes, wishing the desert heat wouldn't make him feel even more drowsy.

Having missed out on some of the conversation, he still managed to gain the main plan from the others as Midian finished his question.

"Mm, yeah. We can be fast," he commented, staring out to the horizon, perhaps wondering if he could spot where a certain town once stood out there. "Which way we headin' though, eh? Not really a life goal to die of a heat stroke because we got lost."

Since everyone else was piling out of the van - and that it was now clear that it was time to leave the vehicle to the robot-vultures (Eggman had robot vultures, right?) - Aga opened the passenger door and hopped out, strolling ahead of the others and looking further down the sandy expanse before them. With a quick check of his compass, he turned back towards the rest of the group.

"Since I'm the only one who knows where we're going," he said with an air of self-importance, "you'll be following me all the way to the canyon. Hopefully you all can keep up, as I'm not going to be carrying anyone, clearly."

Tabitha's concerns were met with a cooly tilted head and a sardonic sort of simper on the serval's expression... as he removed his shirt as well as his coat, revealing the remnants of the medical attention he'd received a few hours before. Maybe it was showing off, or maybe he'd just spent too much time around Rock, but either way, he was already sweating, and any heat he could take off his body was welcome in the desert sun. "What, 'ryou kiddin'?" he said. "Y'see all this gauze I'm wrapped up in?" A short coughing fit. "...I'm fit as a fiddle." Traces of chuckles were left in his words, but it was hard to say how much was genuine and how much was just cynical. And he stuffed his dried-blood tee between his jacket and his butt, swaying, stretching, and anxiously waiting for the orders.

"Hhaahhh'righ'," he breathed, pumping himself up as best he could. "S'get this crap over with..."

It was difficult to tell precisely what Tabitha thought of Ace's machismo, as he belittled and brandished his injuries with a sweeping flourish of his shirt, but somewhere between inquiries of jesting and comparisons to stringed instruments, the smaller of the felines was standing a subtle two or three steps back from where she'd originated.

She flashed a delayed smile at the response, and replied in turn with two thumbs up and an earnest, but quiet, "Good!"

Followed by a somewhat awkward, "Great."

And then, a glance around the group, if only for something to do, and finally, "Yeah, we should go."

She was already jogging off towards the front of the pack.

"No," said Coop.

"No, come on, let's go."

He squared himself up in front of Ace and looked the cat in the eye.

"Not going to sit around waiting for you to cripple yourself tripping your way through the desert before you realize you aren't Sonic the Hedgehog," he said.

"Get on my back."
